The Letter

In 2005, I earned my real estate license in the state of Tennessee. Selling didn't come easy for me but I got by. Unfortunately, just getting by didn't cut it when the market started to fold. I was a single father with two children that depended on me and I wasn't making any money. I don't know if you know this, but In real estate, if you don't sell you don't eat. I ended up retiring my license and went back to work in education. This is not a sob story and I don't share this for sympathy. I was fortunate to have a background to fall back on. Some of my fellow agents didn't and lost everything.

I was bitter about my experience in real estate and I would place blame everywhere except where it needed to be. I could only blame myself. I was provided with good training but I didn't implement all of the core components. The one thing I did implement is the annual letter to myself.You write a letter to the future you. You form a vision of future "you" by aligning thought and words and action with that vision. After the letter is crafted, you place it somewhere where you won't forget it. I placed mine under the stereo speaker in my living room.

Now I am going to be honest with you. I am disappointed every year when I open that letter. As I read the letter, tears roll down my face. But like my experience in the real estate market, I did just enough to get by. How are you going to operate your business? You see, I am not going to be disappointed anymore, when I open that letter, the only tears will be tears of joy.

In your business, are you going to do just enough to get by or are you going to run it to win. In any case, write that letter today; put it up; set the reminder on your smart phone's calendar (I use google Calendar); and keep your vision aligned with your thoughts, words, and actions.
