I Have A Gripe About Website Comments

Ok, so I've been looking for comments on my blog and posting comments in return.

All good...up to a point...

A lot of the blogs I leave comments on do not have a box where I can leave my web address.

So I get no benefit from a backlink.

The site owner gets fresh content for their blog though.

When someone leaves a comment on my blog, I get some new content and the commenter gets a backlink back to their site.

It's an unequal transaction. The commenter gets the better part of the deal because they end up with both a backlink and new content.

So what's the incentive for any of us to leave comments on blogs that hide the web address box?

Maybe I'm missing something. If I am, can someone steer me straight?

Otherwise, I will either leave some low-level (one sentence long) comment rather than a longer higher-quality comment or I simply won't leave a comment at all.

What do you guys think?

And, if your blog hides the web address box, can you let us know your reasoning for that?

I've also left several comments on blogs via SiteComments and none have been approved. I've no idea if it's because the site owner hasn't got around to reviewing comments of if they didn't like the comments so didn't approve them.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

It's a tricky question.

The bit I can answer is to do with comments.
When someone receives comments for their post through WA, the system allows them to approve and give feedback.

However, if your comments are not approved , you can see it on the system and it shows the reason behind.

Also, cross check your website comments widget just to make sure its been activated.

Hopefully, this gets sorted. All the best!

Well, something seems to have gone wrong in SiteComments for me. None of the comments I posted are listed. Looks like they disappeared into a black hole. I just tried leaving a new comment and this one was registered on the system. I'll chalk the loss of previous comments up to a glitch.

HI Gary,
The current theme for one of my sites only allows for x2 boxes.
The development team have picked name (via the Gravatar) and email. They have not allowed for the third option.

When the comment is published the author gets their Gravatar, name and image published on my site.

Try adding the WP Advanced Comment plugin to your blog, Happy2Learn:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-advance-comment/

It should give you full control over your comments section and allow you to add in the missing Website box.

Hi there, just a shot in the dark on this one but in my opinion only. It might be that themes are set up differently, when I was going through my set up, I had noticed you could change the form and add lines such as first name, last name, etc...it could be related to that? I'm no technical guru by any means, so hopefully somebody with better information will shed some better light on this subject.

On my site, for some reason, the section to add your info is at the top of the comment section and I cannot figure out how to get it to the bottom, so sometimes it could be operator error.

As far as approval of comments, sometimes being timely isn't an option with busy lives, or maybe not having an internet connection available at all times. Just a thought..

Best wishes

Kris

Hi Kris,

This plugin will give control over what inputs appear on posts for comments, even if a theme hide the Website box:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-advance-comment/

I think you can rearrange the boxes in the plugin too, so you could use to to rearrange the layout of your comments section.

I know it can take a while for some members to get the time to review comments. But none of the ones I've submitted through SiteComments have earned any credit (I assume that means they haven't been reviewed or have been rejected).

Gary

Thanks Gary! I'll give it a try, my comment section is a mess and I just cannot figure out how to fix it!!
