I have both blog roll and static pages as home pages. No idea which is better and do not think there is a simple answer to this.
The only advantage of blog roll over static I can think of is that the audience will be hit with information they are looking for right away. In the training it says to leave the about me page as a look up if anyone is interested and use your blog roll as the main page. It's probably best to get into what they are there for straight away and then if they want to know the why you have this site they can investigate the "about you page". I hope this helps.
