Excellence Versus Mediocrity

“Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent easily recognizes genius,” Arthur Canan Doyle. Why is it that some people strive for excellence while others settle for mediocrity? What is the key factor that creates the difference between both terms? Let me speak a little about mediocrity and excellence as they pertain to humans.

People who accept mediocrity are those that do just enough to be considered good enough and that’s it while those that achieve excellence are the ones willing to put in the extra time and effort to push themselves to the level of excellence in what they do in their personal, professional or business lives.

“The price of excellence is discipline. The cost of mediocrity is disappointment,” Anonymous. Furthermore, the difference between mediocrity and excellence is effort, commitment and discipline. The former gives just enough, has no commitment and lacks discipline. However, the latter gives more than enough, is committed and disciplined. You should never settle for mediocrity when you know you can achieve greatness.

“Excellence is a better teacher than mediocrity. The lessons of the ordinary are everywhere. Truly profound and original insights are to be found only in studying the exemplary.” Warren Bennis. Moreover, mediocrity does not produce prosperity. The way out of mediocrity is excellence. Commitment is what separates excellence from mediocrity. More energy is spent on being mediocre than striving for excellence. Mediocrity is something that we bring upon ourselves; however, excellence is something that we bestow on ourselves.

In closing remember this: “Push yourself to do more and to experience more. Harness your energy to start expanding your dreams. Yes, expand your dreams. Don’t accept a life of mediocrity when you hold such infinite potential within the fortress of your mind. Dare to tap into your greatness.” Robin Sharma

Excellent point! I always tell my children, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well." I'm really not sure where I heard this phrase along the way, but it has always stuck in my head - especially when the "umph" had long wore off lol.

Thanks!
Shannon
