Self Hosting or WA Hosting

For a long time now, I have been hosting my own Dedicated Server using one of the inexpensive cloud server solutions. On this server, I run cPanel Virtual Hosts which contain all the domains and website that I currently own (too many to count).

I don't have any complaints, my sites run very good and I have a 99.99% up time record. However, I have some of these sites that I have owned for over 5 years and have not really done a lot with.

Recently, after getting started with WA, I started thinking about reactivating a few of my domains, dusting off the sites, and loading them up with content and recent product reviews, in an attempt to spur some revenue generation from them once again.

So here is the dilemma I am facing... And I think I already know the answer.

I'm considering migrating a few of these dormant domains to WA. Therefore, I can run my own tests to see if a WA hosted domain will do better than a self-hosted domain for marketing.

Anyone else have any experience in this area?

I have a few candidates for WA hosting, but, there is one in particular that I am considering transferring over and building out to see how well it does. The niche for it is in the "Make Money Online" niche.

I think promoting WA using the domain would be a real good fit.

I'd like to hear your comments or feedback about your own experience within this area.

This kind of thing is new to me. I hope you will keep us posted.

Most definitely!!

I plan to blog about my findings here frequently.

Interesting idea Doug.

I'm interested if the "Authority" of the WA servers can bleed over to a WA hosted domain. But, in reallity I don't think that there will be any advantage to having the site on their servers or on my own.

The advantage is in the ease with which you can create a site on their servers. And the fact that it is a managed server installation means that you have no work to administer and support your website.

WA is good!

I have some that are not tied to WA.

I have some that are not tied to WA.

Have you noticed any difference in traffic or revenue between like sites? One on WA and another one in another hosting provider?

I have more traffic with my others but I have had them for a long time,

Yes, I am finding that it is really difficult to compare the two sites because of all the variables that come into play between them.

I just added another blog post about the themes that I was using and the impacts it had to my SEO ranks.

Hosting with WA has been a good option for me although I am concerned about being tied to WA. I like to be independent.
Cheers Kev

I don't think anyone is ever tied to WA. Since you are hosting your website with WordPress it is fairly easy to migrate to another wordpress hosting provider.

Not that you would ever need to... I think WA is great!

Because of the closeness to support would prefer a WA server. One advantage of self hosted though is no down time with an ISP outage.

The self-hosted means that if you do have an outage, it's all on you to determine why!

But then, no body else is going to take down your server like what might be possible in a shared server situation.

Real intersting, thanks for sharing :)

No problem... I'll keep everyone updated on how things work for me trying to do a little research on the subject.

Great question Doug!

As you are most likely aware to be hosted here at WA your site needs to be a wordpress site.

That being said I would say that yes WA is a great place to host your site, My most active site has an average of just over 3,600 views per day and I haven't had any problems in my just over 16 months utilizing WA hosting. (My main site is also a Make Money Online" niche site.

I hope that the above helps and look forward to hearing your progress Doug,

Tony

I suppose I should have clarified... WHM/cPanel is a virtual hosting platform that allows a single server to host multiple domains and provides the backend administration are for those domains.

On the domain I run WordPress, at least on the majority of them, so transferring them to WA would be fairly easily accomplished.

I'm happy to see that even your more busier sites are functioning without too much difficulty here on WA. That makes me feel a little better about moving a domain or two to WA. This is one of the reasons I went to a dedicated server in the first place!
