Hi, has anyone got a dash in their domain name, and does it affect your ranking much? I managed to get a .com site but later in the training, it says to avoid dashes. Unfortu
Unfortunately, I managed to do the same thing you did 3 years ago. It won't affect your ranking as far as Google is concerned. It's a pain in the neck, because you have to remember to type in the dashes, which will also remind you to read directions more carefully in the future.
As you move along, what really counts is writing great content, often. and the lessons will give you plenty of help in that department.
Hi Vanessa
Google doesn't care too much. The reason for avoiding dashes is because users may not remember them. If there happens to be another site with the same words in the URL but no dashes then the other site, given similar quality content, is likely to be easier to find for most people.

You can use leandomainsearch dot com, you input a word and it gives you another
And a GoDaddy valuation tool to find a memorable name.
However nowadays domains are not so affected by SEO vs writing quality rich content with good choice of keywords, latter of which would rank you in the search engines.
I would always go for a dot com domain name vs dot net or dot org as people's perceptions when they start typing they would typically assume it is a dot com. And make sure it is spelled correctly as it cannot be edited once purchased.
I would not include dashes and check if the domain is copyrighted, trademarked and ' or registered to an established business.
You can use Jaaxy fo find something suitable and along the metrics would also search if the dot com domain is available
Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better. Starter sites SEO greater than 95.

My website has 3 dashes friend. Yours can't be worst than mine. Lol!. It's a pain to type it in as far as searching goes. Even though it has 3 dashes, I don't think it affects my ranking. But I wish I had known about it before choosing my website's domain name. The next time I choose a domain name, I'll definitely omit the dashes.
Website without dashes are easier to find by any visitors. Lesson learned. All the best!
