I'm doing some Q&A stuff and looking for some insight from new members of Wealthy Affiliate, or, if you've been around a while and can remember your biggest questions as a

My question, or blocker in my case, is am I selecting the right niche? It feels like I won't really know until I go way down the path and then I fear that maybe I have picked the wrong niche or a maybe too micro of a niche, or maybe too broad etc...

Really its my perfectionism kicking in and preventing me from moving forward. I want to know in advance if I'm doing it right and if I've selected the right niche category and if my niche selection will truly be something I enjoy researching and writing about.

So, all that said, that's my input. I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard this but for me its really hard to trust that I've selected the right niche to the point where I take the next step....

This is a question I hear a lot, so it's a great one to add to the list!

write 10 things you like the most then scale it down to three. Example: Baseball, what do you need for baseball, gloves, mits, cleats, hats, socks, or t-ball, bats......... that is a niche

I am always wondering why i have to upload so many long posts to get traffic, is there no other way?
I made reviews of products i tested, i found it very disturbing to make them too long, also too many only waters it down. As a reader it becomes very diffiicult to get to the essential points when there are too many and too long posts - but yet that seems to be driving traffic...
Does this really have to be like this?

Definitely a question to consider Tina. I used to struggle with this as well, so this is a perfect question to add to my list.

I think the thing to keep in mind, which I learned over the years, is that we can't assume that someone reading your post knows everything you do. If you break down a lot of the benefits of a product, include some comparisons to similar products, pros/cons, etc, it should be pretty easy to come up with 1500 words.

If you can't, either you aren't digging deep enough into the product, or the product isn't worth reviewing.

E.g. you can't review a coffee cup. It does its job. Boring. End of story. It's not worth reviewing a funny coffee cup to promote on your blog.

A coffee grinder however, has a lot to say. How uniform is the grind? How loud is it? How does it compare to other grinders at the same price point? Can you get a better grinder by spending a little more money? Is it portable? Can you fix it by replacing parts? What type of coffee does it make best? How do you clean it? etc etc.

That is definitely true Nathaniell. A good review easily comes over 1000 words. On the other hand as a user i see a lot of unneccessary stretched articles where i loose patience and stop reading because i dont get to the point. For example i want to find a recipie and have to scroll down 5 min to reach to the interesting parts with ingredients and instructions.

And the other discomfort on my site was (yes it is abit of a narrow niche), that i would have to add some not so essential posts in between the solid reviews to manage the frequency. Which again makes it in my eyes less efficient for a reader to find the essential content.

I guess im just a person who likes dry and straight to the point information where i dont loose alot of time scrolling through not so essential parts - maybe others are fine with it.

Is it safe and secure enough to build a long-term online business in the MMO niche using just content marketing with SEO to fuel the business. Implementing affiliate marketing within content and Google AdSense to generate revenue.

Do you think that be enough to earn a full-time income?

Very interesting question. The answer is yes, but I'll have to think about how to phrase it exactly. I won't post a link here, but I have a video on my YT channel called "is the make money online niche saturated" which addresses this question.

If we say, rightly, that to get traffic is writing quality content and add it too to social media. Then what is plan B if you don´t want to have grey or black links and working in other things prefer to get the traffic?

I have my ideas but I have tried to ask some people, who have to get success, but newer get an answer :) So this is a challenge :)

Great question. PM me and I'll send you a link, but in general, I spend time discovering new types of content to produce. As soon as I start making money, I reinvest the profits into outsourcing.

Then I follow up with "supplemental" content, e.g. find out what's ranking (GA & Search Console), and make more content based on keywords around that.

I have asked here in chats multiple times and also PMed you as well about my question but I didn’t here from anyone. People who have answered my question were all like me struggling ( newbies).

I have stopped asking question here and joined Facebook groups to get answer to my specific questions from experienced people.

I am still going to help you out - I am kind of stuck at 10k page view per month and looking for a ways to increase my traffic. ( my website is 1.5 year old with only 92 posts)

Sorry for not answering your PMs. I get a lot, so I usually focus on my referrals with regards to PMs.

I'm glad to hear you're already getting some traffic. You are heading in the right direction now that you have some traffic flowing to your site. Sales are just around the corner.

The first general thing I would suggest is this training: That will teach you how to take a look at where your traffic is coming from, so you know what type of content people want to read. It will also give you insight into what Google is ranking you for, so you can double down.

Another bit of insight you'll learn is exactly where you can make money on your site. Look at your high traffic pages and brainstorm what type of product those people might be interested in.

You can then write a product review of that product you just brainstormed, and create an internal link to your product review (just link to the review). You can also place an affiliate link directly on that page if you feel like a product review isn't necessary.

If you do write a review though, the next step would be to then brainstorm more content ideas related to what type of person might want that product. For example, if I ended up writing a review of a Productivity Journal, I could write some supplemental articles from which I then link to the review.

After publishing some of this stuff, go back into Analytics, and check again. See what worked, what didn't, and plan a strategy moving forward.

Thank you so much. Your advice is always spot on. if I even decided to go Premium plus, I am going through you!

I've had 3 people this week ask me questions regarding their Adsense installation not working. This is much more than normal. Was there something recently changed about Adsense

I got a notification from Adsense about error which can cause decline of earnings. communicated to site support and they said it is fixed.
But i keep seeing the same issue and the same error message in my site.

I have not heard of anything

I’m not aware of any issues with AdSense or the AdInserter plugin, they appear to be working ok

I've had continuous problems with Adsense. Lately they're telling me my "revenue is at risk." WA Support has been helping me with their codes, etc...but there always seem to be problems with Adsense. Debra

Seems to be working fine for me, Nathaniell.

Thanks for sharing this, Nathaniell.

I was scolded and shamed when I was new for doing exactly that. I wasn't aware of all the ins and outs and the way the person approached it publicly as opposed to sending me a PM to let me know what I was doing wasn't the right way they posted it for everyone to see.

I hope this post can save others from the shame I felt for doing something "so wrong" when I didn't know any better.

Nathaniell,
Yes very true I have done the same thing and have been yelled at and didn’t do it again we are still new and trying to figure stuff out still. So it’s hard and we get it and need to work harder on getting out site out there more. Thanks for the post gear one and real.

People need to be so busy improving their own lives that they don't have time to complain about others. Most rules violations will be reported and dealt with by people who get paid to do that.
Keep your focus on achieving your goals and if newbies mess up cut them some slack.
I still make rookie mistakes. I still need to get clarification. I still ignore those who want to chew me out instead of helping by offering resolutions.
Now, back to work I go.

Hello Nathaniell Thanks for the clarity, it’s so easy to put a foot wrong and then feel embarrassed or worse feel humiliated and afraid to ask questions on any topic....

I like that you are suggesting tolerance, we all need this right now...be kind be helpful and be congruent....👍

Hi Nathaniell, good to see you again, this seems to be a recurring subject, I wrote about this also, 3 years ago It's seems hard to understand when it's spamming and when it's not.
It saves so much time when you are helping people to get all info within the first question.
Enjoy your day and stay safe and healthy 😀

Do You now if I can add Mp3, or Mp4 to my website?
Thank You.

Yes you can, Marion wrote a training about this

Thank You very much :)

Haha. Yes, it's definitely a recurring topic. Just wanted to add a reminder!

Hi Nathaniell, Lead capture and building an email list is quite tricky, not in theory but in practice, Alan

Yes. It's often easier said than done. Good question!

One of my biggest challenges was deciding which tasks count as prospecting in the online world. I learned over time, it's not the writing that's the prospecting. It's the SEO and promotion that's the prospecting, so it needs emphasis too in order for people to come to the site.

Another challenge for me was making the flow of relevance right so I can convert people from my site to WA (or any other offer) with relevance.

I've had alot of other challenges too, but that would be a whole book. Lololol.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'prospecting', and how it relates to SEO vs writing. Can you clarify a bit?

I'm definitely still working on "flow of relevance" myself. Super interesting concept...not always easy to implement.

Thanks Tiffany!

In offline sales, "prospecting" is when you go out and look for relevant buyers. When you get online, it's like they tell you to write, but I couldn't figure out how the writing and SEO would do the same thing as old school prospecting.

I also had a difficult time trusting that taking my hands off rather than going door to door or meeting people live would work. Does it make more sense now?

The whole sales funnel process was confusing at first.

Yeah, sales funnels definitely are troublesome. Thanks Holly!

Nathaniell, the most confusing part when I first started was the lead generation process, it took time and training to understand the overall sales process.

Ahh. Lead generating > Sales. Order of events. Great stuff!

Since it's all new and confusing, if you have no background, the whole process can be a mystery. Here are four things I can think of.
1. How to be sure you've entered your affiliate links correctly.
2. How Adsense works. I know they have online info, but I don't find it very user-friendly.
3. Along with that, a little training on how to modify/customize those Adsense ads on your site.
3. Understanding what backing up a file is all about. Just why is it so important. How much can you depend on WA tech support to bail you out?

Excellent ideas Nancy. Even "small" stuff like checking to make sure your affiliate links work can be a big hurdle. Thanks!

I read your comments, and like the one from Mike and Rhi, because I think that is very important. Who do you trust? I feel that we write our reviews just to help people figure that out. There are so many rip-off programs and ones that are 'way too expensive. People could use a comparison between a few of the scamming companies and a side-by-side comparison of the difference with WA.

How to identify scams vs legit products. A common issue (unfortunately) in the MMO world.

Product creators focus on the sales funnel instead of the actual end product.

Hi Nathaniell,

One of the most common questions I have received is how to choose a niche. When it comes to creating a website, what is the difference between WordPress.com versus WordPress.org. When I learned about affiliate marketing years ago, I wasn't sure what an affiliate website was supposed to look like and searched for examples.

The WordPress thing is one I hear a lot too. Once you start talking about "self hosted", the conversation is done! LOL.

Thanks Eartha!

Great post, Nathaniell - such a great idea for developing new content!

I think a step-by-step tutorial for how to get approved as an Amazon affiliate ("Associate") would be helpful for many.

For example, how do you get approved as an Amazon affiliate when you (1) don't yet have access to the Amazon API, but (2) Amazon will review your website to see if it complies before approving affiliate status, and (3) you need the API to properly upload product info in an automated/real-time way? (Amazon does not allow prices to be included unless they are real-time prices directly from the Amazon API).

For many it's a 'which comes first, the chicken or the egg' kind of a problem -- or, self-fulfilling prophesy -- if a website is doomed to not be approved for the Amazon Associate program since it doesn't yet have access to real-time product info UNTIL approved as an Amazon associate. . .

Also many would find helpful to have a rule of thumb for how long to wait after establishing your website before applying for the Amazon Associate program; should you just not have any affiliate links when you first apply; is there a checklist for what Amazon wants to see? Any pointers/tips for avoiding pitfalls and assuring successful approval? etc

If you have already written about all of this, can you include a reply with links? I really appreciate your friendly and helpful/very valuable guidance.

Great questions in there K. The chicken and egg thing about adding affiliate links and getting approved is definitely confusing.

This is a good training you may find helpful:

I think the concept of how best to market products was my initial query but I guess that’s because I had virtually no online presence other than a FB page.

I have come from a marketing background and had sales experience but it’s always been a product or service that I knew well (although I stopped over 15 years ago).

So It was so much more about how do I sell these products. Who to and how do I market them. In fact 6 months in I still struggle sometimes. Particularly with my niche site where I want to ensure a product is top notch before I recommend it.

Then it was about understanding how you got your unique link and how this was tracked by the site. I remember thinking but what if they go to a site, don’t buy and then visit a few days later via another link. So understand the links and cookie tracking

So for me payment no, because most people are aware of PayPal and have used eBay or something similar. It was really those 2 things, links and how do I actually sell/market

Don’t know if that’s of any use!

Kevin

Definitely some good suggestions in there Kevin. This really helps!

Knowing who to trust, too much conflicting "evidence" way too many cowboys!

Yeah, there's a lot of conflicting info out there for sure. Thanks for the suggestion Michael!

Hey Nathaniel,

There are plugins like EWWW or Smushit that do this but hosts may not allow them as they use the server CPU to run if you do not buy their paid version and that puts intense load on the servers.

WordPress resizes, but they do not optimize images. Kraken.io is the best in the industry and we highly recommend using it by installing the Kraken WordPress plugin. This will optimize all of the images that WordPress creates for you. We use Kraken.io for all images that are published through SiteContent, and we have big plans to use Kraken.io in our next class of servers to optimize images for all sites!

Carson

Wow. WA hosting using Kraken for all sites hosted here sounds pretty cool!

Sounds like I need to install it ASAP

Great information - very useful!
Thanks so much for sharing, Carson!

What happens with the EWWW plugin that is automatically installed with WA site builder? Should it be removed?

What exactly are the steps with this Kraken thing, install the new plugin and bulk optimize or what? We need some more info here. By the way, it is updated 6 months ago, is it safe? I see it is untested with 3 themes I am using, not sure how to proceed.

@Jovo,

The EWWW image optimization plugin is installed by default for all sites on our current hosting platform and this will be the case until we release our new class of servers that we are working on.

At that point EWWW will be replaced by Kraken.io as the default image optimization plugin/service.

Carson

Many thanks.

See haren12's answer. I resize my images once they are in the media library, as they are often bigger than I want. I use lots of thumbnails.

The word press plugin EWWW Image Optimizer does this Job when you upload the image. it resize this image in different sizes as per device view port.
Responsive template take care of which device has requested the image word press then serve that image.

It would also depend on the template you choose & whether it allows for bigger/smaller graphics. There is the image optimizer too. I've used it a few times, but it was kind of hit-&-miss when using it.

I ended up scaling down with 3rd party software.

I may be mistaken but I believe the EWWW Image Optimizer Plugin that comes as standard on our WA sites does it for us. It would be good to know for definite if that's the case.

I've learned that ideally your images should be resized exactly to the size you want them to appear on your post or page. Then once they are resized, you should further compress the file size of the image before uploading. That would be optimal, and the way I add images to a Wordpress blog post.

Kaju

But what is the size on your post? You can watch it on 13 or 19 inches screen and on mobile. This has always puzzled me.

Just a question Nathaniell, I am only a four month old member here, and there is so much confusion about not adding links in our posts. I am now getting really confused because on one end, we are being told not to add outside links and then I see more mature ones like yourself and others, adding links to your blogs.

Can you or anyone else explain why there is such a blur to the rules in WA? are those at the top given a different set of rules?

I am not accusing you of anything and hope you take no offence, I just want to do the right thing. Either we stop telling people, not to add external links or we continue to abide by what was told us in the WA rules. It just seems that this topic is not so black and white and I believe it will also stop getting people banned.

Linking to authority sites is OK. Linking to your own website to get visitors from WA is not OK.

Okay thanks Marion :)

Or linking to another affiliate program that gets you the writing privileges taken away as that is spam. As long as links are not spam. Like Marion says authority sites are okay because we need to use them for WA purposes.

Thanks Brenda, its great to clarify this :)

What are authority sites? You all are way ahead of me...just asking ...

I asked Google to explain

Wow, even better thanks Marion :)

They are like Wikipedia, or where you got info from to back up what you stated. More or less like writing an essay and using references to sources used. In our posts/blogs we add links to those sources rather than just reference them.

Awesome.. yep...always best to Google. So we can share links to other websites that have great info related to our topic.

If you're using images from your camera/mobile phone you'll want to resize them before uploading as they can be huge. I usually resize to around 1,000 px wide and let Smush and WordPress handle it from there.

I also use BJ Lazy Load plugin to delay loading images below the fold. You probably already use https://tools.pingdom.com/ to check which parts of your page are slowing things down.

I completely agree

This plugin appears to be abandoned, updated 2 years ago.

Possibly abandoned but it still works. However, that's no guarantee that it will still work next week or the week after.

I used Lazy Load by WP Rocket for a short time, it looked good, but then somebody here blogged that by chance she discovered it would give just empty spaces instead of loaded pictures. I know that this can be just a slow Internet, but I disabled it. Would need one.

But you don't worry about making them exactly the width of your blog post? Mine is 700px, so I always resize to 700px.

Sounds like maybe I don't need to be that precise?

I have never understood this about blog post width, 700px on which screen? Somebody will be reading it on 21 inches computer and somebody on a mobile.

But I do remember Carson writing once in a reply to me about 1200 or perhaps 1500px size, not sure exactly what he wrote, so that it looks good on most screens. I normally never go above 900, most of the time this is 700

The display width is going to vary depending on the theme and whether you're using sidebars etc. As long as the upload size is the same or slightly larger than the display size it's OK. It's better to resize downwards on the fly than upwards so the images don't get pixelated.

Based on that article, if you have a plugin that does it automatically, I think you're good.

Thanks Scott!
