What Business Would You Brag About To Your Friends?
One of the great advantages to doing what we do is that you get to define exactly what it is that you do. As a business owner in this industry, we wear a lot of hats. Depending on what you do throughout the day to run your websites and keep them earning money, you might be a(n):
- content marketer
- affiliate blogger
- affiliate marketer
- internet marketer
- super affiliate
- wordpress developer
- blogger
- influencer
- digital entrepreneur
- online business owner
- CEO of a digital publishing company
- small business owner
- startup founder
- online publisher
- self employed
- website owner
- blog owner
- independent journalist
For me, personally, I have a couple other options as well. Sometimes I say things like I teach people how to make money online or affiliate coach.
After a couple of beers I just start telling people I run a beer website LOL. I'm actually on the job doing market research!
That's a joke, of course, but have you never looked up a review for a beer or wine? People are writing about it and getting paid, so it's not that far fetched. I saw a guy doing energy drink reviews on YouTube. He's getting paid, so what would he call himself?
It's funny that now I've got such a broad look at what to call my line of work. In this post from back in 2012 I was asking the same question and couldn't come up with a decent answer.
As a side note, while scrolling through my past posts, I also discovered something interesting. If you ever feel like you're wasting time, keep in mind that it's all part of the learning process. I found this gem where I spent trying to set up my Google+ profile.
I didn't get where I am today without working through a bunch of these "time wasting" tasks. Sometimes, wasting time just teaches you where to better spend your time.
What Business Would You Brag About To Your Friends?
Right now we're all learning how to run a successful business. Even if you're making money from your website already, the learning isn't going to stop there.
Then you have to learn how to keep it.
How do you scale? How do you structure your business in a tax-advantaged way? How do you hire help? How do you plan for the future?
Learning how to make money from a website is just one step in the direction of growing a successful business from scratch!
The good news is that you are in the driver seat. You get to decide what you want to make your business about. You get to decide what type of brand you want to build. You get to decide what quality of content you want to put out into the world. You get to decide your speed of growth, and how much money to keep vs re-invest.
So what do you say when people ask you what you do for a living?
These days, I just tell people I "run a couple of websites" and leave it at that. "CEO of a digital publishing company" sounds a little too pretentions but if I really wanted to brag to my friends that's probably what I'd say.

I tell people I have a website and most look surprised but then most of the people I know grew up without computers, some want to look up my website right away but most are just a little confused looking.
One day everyone will have a website that would be interesting😜☝️

I love your post Nathaniell. You have raised some good points on What Business would you brag about. Maybe the answer is based on how much you have to drink and what you say by the end of the night! I say I'm a marketer and that I write blogs and product reviews.
