Website Rankings Update 2 Years Later

I don't blog much on my brew site just because I'm busy with more profitable projects. Plus, I started to figure out that the more I blogged about beer, the more I drank. I wanted drinking to be my hobby, not my full time job...so I stopped writing very much for my homebrew website.

However, I was just checking up on some rankings today and am surprised to see that I'm still ranking for two of my targeted keywords despite not having added any content for at least a year...almost two years.

Rank #4: Rare Beer Club Review

  • Traffic: 35
  • QSR: 189

Rank #4: 5000 ml erlenmeyer flask

  • Traffic: 9
  • QSR: 52

I didn't used to rank this well! In fact, I used to be on page 2 for both of these keywords, and would only sometimes pop up in position #10 on page 1.

They don't get much traffic, and basically no sales, so it's not like ranking here is making me a lot of dough. But both topics just happened to be a subject that I was very interested in, and wanted to help people understand.

Note: I think because there are so many ads and product listings for each of these keywords, although I'm technically ranked #4, my listing is more than half-way down the page, so it hurts traffic.

It's also interesting that it took so long to settle down in these rankings.

So remember that the posts you write today may be stuck on page 2, but they may creep up to page 1 in a year or two, as long as your content is high quality enough to deserve that position.

What I Did For SEO

Nothing special. I just followed the WA training. I know it sounds boring but I didn't do anything other than what I've learned in WA for these posts because I used them for examples in my training modules here. Because they were examples, I tried to be as simple as possible to prove the point that WA SEO works.

The Next Step

One of the hardest parts of building an online business is translating this knowledge of ranking to make money! Sure, I can rank for terms like this, but making money means you need to rank for terms that actually turn a profit.

I have done this many times of course, because I'm making a full time income. But it's not always easy. Lots of posts will rank for their target keywords. Not all ranking posts will make money.

My suggestion is before you sit down to write, think about how your blog post is going to make you money.

  • Will you put an affiliate link there?
  • Will you link to a money page?
  • Will you compare with other affiliate products?

Kyle has a great training on writing with intent: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.co...

Ranking is great, but after a while ranking is boring. Making money is the exciting part! If you've been writing for a while and have lots of posts on your site, but are not making money, take some time to think before you write your next blog post.

How will this blog post make me money?

About comparing with other products, I always have comparison tables, in every review. I love the idea, this adds internal links, adds extra info, help people in making an educated choice, but I have never been sure if this is good for sales or not.

Wonder how you added this vertical marking in the last line, this is not the part of the tool for blogs writing here.

That is a QUOTE in the WA editor.

Do not know where it is.

Great tips! Thank you for sharing, Nathaniell.

These are great tips and thanks for sharing with us Nathaniel:)

That's really helpful to think about. I want traffic that converts into customers more than rankings. I'm always writing with the intention of being helpful for people in my niche. Nice post and thanks!
