Selling The Project And Not Just The Product

I worked for a Home Improvement store called Menards for several years. They are the largest home improvement retailer in the Midwest United States. It was my first big break for me coming out of college. It helped me gain a lot of Management experience, and definitely helped me learn a lot about the VAST product knowledge of Home Improvement.

Before my career at Menards, I worked for Office Depot. I learned a lot about sales from them, and that helped me get my foot in the door at Menards.

One of the Menards sales methodologies was to "Sell the Project, not just the Product." The reason for this is many people coming into the store would have a problem, and they knew they needed a product, but often did not have any idea what else they needed to make a project complete.

One $300 product might turn into a project that is $1000-$2000. Compared to Office Depot, I was constantly amazed at Menards how many people would put down BIG MONEY on a project for their house. Dozens of sales that were Tens of Thousands of Dollars, And Sometimes even 6-figures.

When I was working at Office Depot the largest sale would be $1000, and that was very rare.

So you might be asking where is this blog post going? Well today I just discovered that Home Depot has an Affiliate Program.

They are the worlds largest home improvement store, and have operations on several continents. Making it accessible in many parts of the world.

Their commission payout is very similar to Amazon. 2% and as high as 8% on certain items. But the best part is that, unlike amazon they are in the business of selling Projects. They have a ton of BIG TICKET items to sell, which means a lot more money per sale. Many of these sales could be as large as the ones that I saw while working at Menards.

This is a great opportunity for you here at Wealthy Affiliate, to tap into the Home Improvement Market Place. Don't underestimate this Cash Cow.

All the best

What a great observation. Heard the story of the new sales guy that only made one sale in comparison to his colleagues. The sales manager asked just exactly what he sold....turns out he had sold over $40k in items related to what the client had needed while his colleagues had sold $200 here and $400 there. The sales manager had no arguments there!!
