Open Qs for Kyle or Carson: SiteDomains - why diff prices & only 3 TLDs? .ca & .eu?

Why only .com, .net and .org?

Is it because they're the best-known - and therefore, most easily remembered - of all the TLDs? Is it a way of helping us make sure visitors can remember the names of our websites?

What about .info: do you think might ever add that one?

Why are the prices of the different TLDs often different?
I paid $16.99 for the first year of the .com I bought through SiteDomains. (But only $13.99 for the second year, so thanks for that: it was a pleasant surprise).

Will you ever be able to host .ca and .eu domains?

Comments from: Big Things Are Looming! and Hints

I don't know whether this is a popularly-wanted feature, but I see it mentioned occasionally, so thought I'd ask.

You can host .ca/.eu/.anything sites here. We also allow you to buy MANY different TLD's outside of the ones we offer if you type them in exactly.

What we want to avoid is selling people "air" which is what most TLD's can become. I do agree we can offer a larger subset in the UI and I think you are going to find the domain search UI changes in the year ahead to offer a lot more solutions when searching for a domain.

With certain TLD's like .ca or .de there are a lot of government documentation that are required and that is something that we just have not taken on yet, but we likely will in the year ahead.

But there are all sorts of TLD"s that we offer (100's of different ones) and if you type them into a search, you will see. (see attached)

And the pricing is the same from year to year, .com have always been $13.99. .org are a little higher, because whomever owns these TLD get to choose how much they charge for their domains so that is controlled by the TLD owner.

Hi, Kyle.

I paid $16.99 for year 1 of the .com I bought through SiteDomains. Year 2 was $13.99. Do you know why it was higher for the first year?

Thank you for letting us know we can find other TLDs by typing them into the search. You've probably told us that elsewhere and I overlooked it. I apologize if I caused you to repeat yourself.

"What we want to avoid is selling people "air" ...

lol - I love this. It's the perfect way to describe those obscure TLDs. I'm so going to quote you.

It was SUCH a big help to us, when WA became registrars. Thank you for doing the work to make that happen. If you can get through the governmental red tape to offer .ca, .eu, .de, etc., I believe you're going to have a lot of thrilled members.

Thanks for your answers and for the screenshot.

To me, it looks like WA is trying to help inrease probability that we will be able to build successful by selling only .com, .net, .org. Those three extensions are the best know and least likely to be interpreted as spammy domains.

As far as pricing goes, the various prices points for different domain names types (.com, .org,, .net, .whatever) is industry standard. Buying a domain name is sort of like buying gas.

Water, which won't get you anywhere is super cheap. Unleaded costs the least, Premium cost the most. Diesel is somewhere in the middle. Gas stations and domain name resellers all tend charge very similar prices because it is too easy to buy somewhere else.

Connivence and service are the only true distinguishing factors that a domain reseller or a gas station owner provides buyers.

The ability to purchase a domain name through WA is an example of yet another service that WA is providing us to make starting our businesses simplier.

Hi, Sondra.

Interesting points. Thanks for commenting.

Sharon

WA is now able to register some country specific domain names. They can host websites from anywhere in the world even if they can't be registered here. Sometimes the advice you're given is not correct. WA can host .ca and .com.au websites.

That's terrific news! Thanks, Marion!

Hey Sharon,

I'm unable to buy domain names here with site domains for any extension other than .com .org and .net, but I do have .com.au domains that I purchased elsewhere and do host here at WA. Just thought I'd let you know that you can host .ca sites here, you just can't buy the domain from site domains.

Cheers,

Peter
