I have met people who don’t show any concerns regarding data security issues and possibility that their private data can be exposed. “Nothing to hide” – this is a typical argument which hard to challenge.

Actually, it is easy to get confused in the details of cybersecurity and privacy and the constant discussions about system breaches, data frauds, cyber attacks, security controls, risk assessment and management, and continuous monitoring.

And as a result, we miss the point that it is about our data and our privacy. It seems that every day more and more data is made available on the Internet or, much worse, is used for the certain purpose.

New Internet of Things (IoT) world comprises not only laptops, tablets, and smartphones; it consists of very familiar items: television, medical devices, dishwashers, refrigerators, heaters, baby monitors, many other technologies which we are using on a daily basis. We are also aware that banking data, health records, insurance data, car registration and traveling data – everything is integrated into IoT.

The unimaginable amount of data is generated about every person in this world. Sometimes, I feel that every step of my life is scanned, recorded, monitored, and transmitted.

I don’t mind since I have no choice. But I’d like to know what happens to this data from the privacy and confidentiality perspective.

Every person has certain privacy rights which include:

  • Behaviour, political activities, and religious practices;
  • Body characteristics, body functions, genetic codes, biometrics;
  • Communication;
  • Location and space;
  • Data and image.

Who is accountable for ensuring that my privacy rights are maintained?

Parliament? Government? Technology Providers? Law? Security services?

I am not sure.

What about you?

Tought question
Very scaring, no place to hide

Yes... We are generating data on every step... We dont have privacy

Nope

We pretty much don't have any privacy. With that said, everything about us is available on line.
Angie

Yes... it is true... unfortunately.

Wow...this explains all these telemarketing calls I've been receiving the past few months. I believe all these entities are connected in some form or fashion.

Yes i believe so too! It was all about the money. When these sites started doing this, there were never laws put in place to protect the public. These sites and data brokers are using the fact that since if your information is public and posted in the courts and they have a right to post your sensitive or personal info on their site, like traffic ticket information, etc. Profit over people. Ill bet cyber security is a great course to take right about now. lol

Thank you beautiful!

Yes, information can be copied and sold many times...
and sometimes companies are not aware of it...

Thank you... This is a serious list...

So is who's responsible?...either way we have to get a handle on this issue. I hate to say it but...it may get worse before any real action is taken.:(

Unfortunately, you might be right.

I totally agree,
Angie

Thank you, Angie for stopping by the post and thank you for the input.
Yes, we have the issue... somehow trying to solve it when it gets us... but it is getting bigger with time, and it needs a global solution.

Me, I'm the only one responsible!
That's how it seems, if you read anything about what's happening in the gov't and the marketplace.
Not a very comfortable situation!
Tim

Thank you so much for your comment... You are right, we are left to solve our problems of privacy and security. We just manage (in some cases) win some small fights with companies who are using our identities... but the real issue is not resolved.

Yes very uncomfortable.

Glad you brought this up!...Yes. I just had to contact some companies to have my profile removed from the internet search. ( I never agreed to) then you have to have Google remove the url. My mother was able to type in my name and find a picture of me and some more of my personal information was exposed right there online! I've been getting calls from people all over the world lately with scam offers and telemarketers.

Thank you for your input in the discussion. Things are getting out of control and we are left chasing companies... This issue needs a global solution. Otherwise, we are just patching some cases...
As far as I can see, it is getting bigger with time...

Yes you are spot on. So today I did another search and my address came up and phone number. Also LinkedIn info. It is really disturbing. Not to mention their are companies charging to have your personal info cleared from the searches. We can all It's just not right. People can steal your identity too easy.

Stealing data - it is very easy... Companies are also ignoring cybersecurity measures.
And we are left to deal with all these cases

Excellent post, the horse has well and truly bolted on information gathering, it is unbelievable the amount and depth of that information gathered.
The catch cry like you say is that if you are doing nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear, which to a degree rings true.

The great divide is how that information is used, interpreted and implemented in relation to the laws of the land. I think that is what folks need to be mindful of.

The ability to generate information on individuals and groups has exceeded the ability of the authorities to manage that information in a fair and moral way. It hasn't made its presence felt but it will do so moving forward. Guilt by association or perceived and an interpreted association is one of the things that holds us back as a civilization.

Thank you for stopping by my post. I appreciate your valuable input in the discussion. The issue of privacy (along with security) is a big topic and a big issue, and it seems that people don't pay attention unless things start going wrong.
I am sure we can't solve this in for one company or one country or even region. We have to look for a global solution.
