Hi guys! It's been a while since I last asked a question, but I have one for you. I've been experimenting with the way I emphasize the linked words in my product review posts. My q

Please don't italicize...the words do not stand out because they are hard to read! I like BOLD and COLOR!

I definitely won't italicize Deidre ;) Bold and color it is! I'm at lesson 7 of the 5th course, so I'm sure I'll learn much more about adding links more effectively. Thanks for your input!

Keep going! You're almost done! I don't think there's a Course 6 yet...please not now...Amazon Peak Season!

Oh Deidre I'm not done yet. I almost finished all the courses yes, but my website is far from complete. I got some great news today, though. I think I'm going to blog about it here. Thanks for your encouraging words!

I see you have another Blog...dang girl! Guess I will do it now...crap...lol! KIDDING! Where will I be flying today?!

Another blog, where? I wrote another blog here and I'm working on another product review for lesson 7 of the 5th course.

It looks like 6 days ago? I respond to everything in te order they were received. I am behind, I guess! I left a Comment on your site...you'll see! Anyway, I can't keep up with all your Blogs...THERE ARE TOO MANY! LOL!

LOL! It's okay Deidre ;) At least my website looks active that way, doesn't it? Google must love that.

Yes! You're killing me...go get it, girl!

Blue is the common linking color, I see some in other colors sometimes and I really didn't know they were links until I happened to hover over them. :))

Hi Kim! Blue huh? Yes I had more answers to my question saying that I should make my link color blue. I think I'll make all links blue in one post and a darker shade of green in another post. I'll remove the underline. I'll do some testing with bold links vs standard links as well. Let's see what happens.

Thanks for your input by the way Kim.

No problem, I always experiment and then I watch for several days to see how my Google analytics and webmaster responds to the changes as well. :))

I think color is the best answer too. The other things you list are for context emphasis in your writing. Using them as a link highlighter may change the meaning of your content unknowingly.

Hi Doug and Debbie! I see your point, thanks for reminding me about that. The last thing I want is to mislead people.

My thinking on changing the color of your linked words to blue is that it's universal. People recognize the blue words as links.

Hi Melanie! Thanks for your reply. So by changing the linked words to blue would imply a higher click through rate to my affiliate products? That's an interesting thought.

They do and for that reason I think in my humble opinion you do not want to mess about with the color you would have to check and test changing the format. I do it all the time, underline of italic or bold and have had no adverse affects but don't take anyone's word for that split test it

Hi Catherine! Thank you very much for your reply. If I understand your response correctly, you're saying that I shouldn't mess with colors other than the universal blue? And secondly, you say that I should keep my links standard, so to not make them bold or underlined?

I'll modify some of my product reviews and apply different things to my links like you suggest. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!

Yes keep them the default color, and the reason for that is the fact that it is the standard and the expected color. To change that you put obstacles in the way of your potential customer, because they are searching for a link. However about 1 in 10 links I do underline them or italicise them and have had no adverse affects, but you must test for yourself. I know that underlining links is so nineties Marion, but there are some people like me who have been around long enough to expect it

All right Catherine, that seems loud and clear. Thanks for clarifying!

Well you have certainly cooked up a storm with this question if you try everyone's suggestions you should be finished testing by half past February. Seriously though only your readers can tell you what there best experience is and hte only way you will know that is to run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it.
Every niche is different and each society has different ideas of norms. So someone replying what not be the demographic of your reader. Good luck

I sure have. I got some useful answers to this question, though, so that's good.

I make mine blue but it depends on your colour scheme. :)

I figured that much Kathy ;) The question is what color would fit into my color scheme.

I had a look at your site, blue would look fine and as Melanie said, blue is the colour I would expect links to be. :)

I am faced with the same task. i have links that don't look that easy or compelling the get attention. I am going to set in bold and set in a color that contrasts and stands out. My own personal taste would be not to underline..

Hi Jack! Three votes for not underlining my links. I hope that others can give me a good answer as to what color would work best for my theme.

I also agree on the non-underlining of the links. That way, I can still underline to make emphasis without an individual thinking it is a mis-colored link.

Hi Norm! I figure by now, that the underlining of links should go LOL! What I have left is making them bold, changing the color to blue, changing the color to a darker shade of green. Thanks for your input!

*investigates site*
You have links, but few "call to action" lines. Call to action = "click here" "follow this link" get more information", etc. There isn't anything good or bad about having about 5 links per article. But your links should describe the person *doing* something or * getting* something as a result of the action they do. From your latest (http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/pack-it-up-travel-smart-pack-light-review), you don't have ANY call to action lines. Your article looks more like ..well, ... an article. The links I'm sure would lead me to more information, but with a definite lack of lines that suggest what I shoul DO with the links, I'm not left with desire to click them.

I am a VERY curious and inquisitive person. When something says "click here", I gotta go find out what it says! But I also use Google Chrome which very easily shows me in the bottom left the link properties. As in, I can see where the link goes. If you use a link shortner and the actual link properties are hidden, well, that makes me even MORE curious! But if you don't....I can determine that your article is a review for something you are advertising.

Hi Norm! Thanks for your detailed reply. I like that! Yeah, during the third course I had to incorporate affiliate links in my articles and I followed Kyle's example. I was thinking of adding links more effectively, but I also don't want to sound to "aggressive". I guess I have to find a balance in that.

I'm at lesson 7 of the 5th course now, and it's all about adding links more effectively. Let's see what I learn from this. I already took your advice about shortening my affiliate links. I know I should shorten the older ones as well. Thanks again for that!

Norm as usual the voice of common sense

*blushes*

Yep, I agree. I change the color to bring attention to the link.

Hi Charles! Thanks for your reply. Can you give me some advice as to what color to pick for my links? I know how to change them in my color scheme, I'm not that good at selecting the proper color for links.

I think it should be a balance between on flow of the article/blog and the coloring. The eye tends to focus on the changing colors in you text, but too much color or brightness is annoying (cartoony) and too subtle and the link is overlooked. For me, my main text is black, so I usually stick with a dark green, and if it's something that I really want to bring attention to, I use red. I try to make look as professional as possible. But the preference is up to you. Like what was mentioned in an earlier comment, test different colors out and see how it looks. I hope this helps.

cwatsoniii1

That's exactly my resistance against changing my links to very bright colors. I'm very sensitive to bright colors, so personally I would click away from websites that have very bright colors. In my color scheme red links would make my website look like a Christmas theme, don't you think? Green/white/red LOL!

My main text is black also and the color of links is set to a darker shade of green by default. I want to make the content look as professional as possible, but still get people to click on my links. I guess it also takes some time until returning visitors trust me enough to click the linked words in my product reviews.

Thanks for your input!

You are most welcome

I'm with Barry. Bold them and, if you want to change the color.

All right Carla, 2 votes for bolding them and to not underline them. I don't mind changing the color, but I don't want to disturb my readers with links that are too bright. My color scheme has many shades of green, so which color would be good for links in my case?

Thanks for your input!

Maybe a very dark green, Muriel? Not sure without seeing it. I would test some out to see what you like. :)

I'll do as you suggest, Carla. I'll write another WA blog post the link to the pages that I have modified, so others here can tell me what their impression is. I could like one option, but eventually I want my visitors to have the best user experience possible.

very often this is set in the themes style sheet and is difficult to change but I guess the real answer is to test and see which one makes the best improvement in click through

Hi Jack! I know how to change the color and I made them bold and underlined by myself. I don't mind doing that, though. I think it's too early for me to see which version gives me a better click through rate at this point. I'll keep that in mind, though!

bold them and make them a different colour like blue is what i do

barry

Okay barry, making them bold and remove the underline? Sure, I can change the color and my second question would be which color would suit well within my color scheme? My color scheme is about green colors and I want my links to stand out, but not disturbing my readers.

Hi guys, sorry if my question seems a little confusing. It's the only way I could come close to what I originally wanted to ask you. Did you guys notice that if you want to write a

Sounds like a lesson well learned.

You can say that again. Not just for me, I'm sure others here can benefit from my "lesson learned" as well :)

Ok guys, I figured it out! I tried to go with Melanie's (mlshands) suggestions about creating a review page. However, I didn't get it to work the way I wanted it, so I decided to only add the first part of the amazon product name as my review post titles. That worked! The bing seo analyzer said "no violations" found!

Lesson learned: When in Microsoft Word, try to count the words of my blog post title in advance and make sure it doesn't exceed the 64 characters.

I've submitted both new URLS to the index of both Bing and Google.

Here are the new links:

http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/maayong-buntag-an-introduction-to-the-visayan-language-review

http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/2-leather-boarding-pass-holder-black-cover-review

Can you guys tell me what you think? Does it describe the product in a clear way? Thanks!

I left you a comment. on one of your posts. Well written, good posts.

Thank you so much Ken! Did you think the post title made enough sense for you? The original blog post title was too long so I made it shorter.

I think it was alright.

Great! Thank you Ken!

Some of mine are doing that as well.

Yes it happens when your post or page title exceeds the 65 characters. From now on I'll optimize the title in my word documents already before I start writing the rest of my blog post.

I decided to just change the blog post titles a little from the posts that were "too long" according to the seo analyzer. I felt it made more sense if I changed the permalinks too. I submitted the new permalinks to Google and they got indexed right away.

I put them through the seo analyzer and the blog post that I've changed the title of were ok now. "No SEO violations found".

The only problem I have now are the amazon product reviews. Some of the product names are too long all by themselves..

That's a good idea. I will probably go back and change mine. Are the Amazon product names the titles of your posts? If that continues to be a problem, you may have to have a different title with the products as a post.

It were some other post titles as well. I managed to change those to titles that "worked" for the bing seo analyzer and still made sense. The amazon product names are my blog post titles indeed. I wonder how I could make it so that the visitor still knows it's a product review and about what product and at the same time please bing.

Any ideas?

Is there any way to put the first part of the product in the title? Can you give me a link so I can look at it?

Sure. Here's one link to the product on amazon I want to promote http://www.amazon.com/LEATHER-BOARDING-HOLDER-TRAVEL-PASSPORT/dp/B005PZEXLW/ .

As you can see this product title is huge. Let me know what you think :) The second one is this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1466440066/

I have the same problem with this product as well.

The only thing I know to do is to leave out some of the product description. For the first one, try Review of Leather Boarding Holder or something similar.
For the second, try Review of Maayong Buntag! An Intro to the Visayan Language These still may be too long.
Have you thought about having just a review page with each product review on it by category. Such as book reviews, travel accessories, etc.?
I wish I had a better answer for you! Good luck!

You came up with the same idea that I had in mind for the first product. I like the idea of a review section, too. So, every time I write a review on a product I basically "add" it to a certain page? That could definitely work. I think I'll look into that.

I need details, so I'll describe it below:

When I see another great city guide or some other travel related book, I add it to a page called book reviews? Every time I add a new item to it, I share my page on my social accounts?

The same scenario is applicable to other travel related products, right?

Thanks for helping me Melanie!

What is this, seo analyzer, where is it? Is it from Bing search engine? I missed something somewhere. Please explain.

Hi Ken! Did you know that Bing has its own webmaster tool? You need a microsoft, hotmail or live mail account for that though. The bing seo analyzer is a diagnosis tool within Bing webmaster tools. It checks whether any page on your site violates any SEO guidelines. That's when I got the error that some of my blog post titles were too long.

I managed to fix those and now all of my blog posts have zero SEO violations in Bing as well. Google seems to be okay with longer blog post titles. Keep your blog post title below 64 characters and you'll be fine. Tip: Just type in the blog post title you have in mind in MS word first. Highlight the entire sentence and click on the word count icon.

This will let you know how many characters your sentence has both with spaces included and without spaces. Then you can copy that title to a new blog post. When you publish it, you can copy the permalink to the seo analyzer in bing and it will check whether your title is too long.

I hope this helps :)

Thank you MurieB86 for updating me about Bing. My second website built 3 years ago I remember plugging in a yahoo/bing code (like google), a few months later find out they no longer doing that, so I assumed that yahoo/bing did not apply anymore. Thank you again.

That's what I plan to do. I have a review parent page and then I created pages based on categories. For mine, pages like Highchairs, educational toys, eco-friendly baby products. Then, I will create posts for each product I review. I'd like to figure out how to have the "buy now" button but I can't use Amazon due to the state I live in. Any ideas?

Would just a link to them be sufficient to earn a commission?

Hmm ok let me think for a second.. You want to use the amazon buy now button? If you can't use amazon to promote products with and you would refer people to them, you wouldn't get any commission when they buy it. Did you find similar affiliate programs for your niche? Maybe they have those kind of buttons available?

Yes. I can't use Amazon and I haven't done enough research into the affiliate programs yet. I still have lots of work to do on this idea!

I think a link could work, but it might not look as "inviting" compared to an actual button. Or to rephrase it, there wouldn't be a crystal clear call to action in it. Just some link.

The only thing I could come up with Melanie is if you hire someone to create such a button for you. Then you could connect any offer to it. Just a thought.

It's something to think about. Thank you for the idea!

No idea on this one, Muriel!

That's okay Carla. It's only Bing that seems to have issues with some of my page titles *sigh*.

Just found out I had been verified by Bing finally so have not looked into the analyzer yet. Will keep in mind though. Thanks, Kim :))

Well you completed one step into that process Kim, so that's great! I haven't seen anyone else asking this specific question, but try the SEO analyzer yourself and you'll see :)

Thanks I will. :)

Hi guys it's Muriël here. When I logged on the WA website a few times today, I saw my WA rank was still 146. When I clicked the blue square with my rank displayed in it, I then

my blue WA rank square has been refreshed to today's WA rank by now. *note to self* Alright, taking into account that it can take two days as well for it to refresh.

Hi Muriël! -

There is a delay on the system - Kyle & Carson are based in Canada - as you know - and it's all to do with the time difference - come tomorrow it will be reading correctly.

Think of it like Google analytics - its a day behind.

Anyway - as you are well aware the WA rank serves no real purpose.

Hi David!

My WA rank on my profile has been refreshed by now, however the blue WA rank square is still at 146. I know the WA rank is less important than the Google page rank of my blog posts. I just want to make sure that WA works properly.

I'll wait for another day or so as suggested by Carson.

Refreash my poor old memory - which Country are you in?

I'm from The Netherlands :)

Thank you Muriël!

Look at at the little Blue box between 16:00 - 17:00 hrs today - you will see what I mean then! :)

I'll do that :) Thanks David!

Mine has actually been like that for a couple of days....I was wondering about that myself...Thanx for bringing it up...

You're welcome Monica :)

My blue box has been refreshed to today's WA rank. Did your blue box refresh by now?

I noticed the same thing.....thanks for the Q&A Muriel!

You're welcome Vicki. I figured I wouldn't be the only one with this issue :)

Hi Muriel,

The blue "RANK" button in the header of the site is cached for a certain period, it will update on it's own to reflect your rank of 131.

Carson

Ah like that, I had a feeling. I just got used to the fact that it got updated every day or so. Thanks for clarifying it.

You're welcome - Let me know if it doesn't update in the next day or so because it shouldn't be out of sync for very long.

I will Carson.

i see rank 131 for you on your profile here

Yes my profile WA rank has been refreshed. My blue square WA rank is still 146. Maybe it gets refreshed later. Thanks for checking though!

Mine has been like that yesterday and today. Mine hasn't moved at all today.

No problem - I've seen that too, seems it just takes time for the two to catch up to each other.

Yes I know, but more than a day? That's why I opened up this discussion. Thanks!

I've seen mine take more then a day. But overall it's really no big deal and nothing to worry about.

Ok, good to know I'm not alone here :) Thanks!

Nope, you're not! I thought maybe I had to empty my cache or something - log out and reload - to be able to see it.

I did figure out it updated itself. I'm seeing 131 on your profile.
The blue thing will fix itself, apparently!

Hi guys,

It's Muriël here and I was wondering if any of you native English speaking WA members could do a proofread on my posts? I really want to improve my English writin

Hi guys,

I wrote another product review blog post again, for the 8th lesson of the level 3 course. Can you guys proofread it for me? Here's the link: http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/maayong-buntag-an-introduction-to-the-visayan-language-of-the-philippines-review

Hi Murie and good evening. I have read your article and it seems spot on and well written. I enjoy your style of writing.

Thanks so much David! Let's see what other WA members have to say about this.

Looks pretty good to me -much better than I could do in a 2nd language. But maybe check these sentences:

However, I wish I came across this product before I traveled to the Philippines.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog post; and that I’ve helped you to make a decision whether this product is the right one for you.

Your site is coming along nicely! What an improvement from the early days...LOL! Link Maayong Buntag! to Amazon so you can receive credit for sales! Although I would love to travel to the Philippines, I have friends from there and they tell me the weather is horrible...sticky! The scenery is amazing though! Your detailed review of Maayong Buntag! should help visitors to the Philippines dialogue and easily get around. I like the help icons included within the pages of the book. Nice work and I did leave a Comment on your site!

Thank you very much! Lol I know I've made some big progress in the past couple of days.

I actually added links to Amazon throughout my review. I tried to be as subtle with it as possible so Google won't "punish" me for using too many external links. Maybe I should make the links have an underline text as well?

I saw your comment and I want to thank you for that!

Yes, it won't hurt...I say link the red book as I like that better...have fun and you're welcome!

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I always get confused between using "had" or not using it. I have incorporated all of your suggestions. Have a great day!

Cool...thanks and you too!

Hi Murie I see Tallell has sorted you out. If you need any help with anything in the future I am happy to help if I can.

Oh David you can always look it over and see if there's anything that I have missed. The more suggestions I get, the better I can make my content. That will lead to happy visitors I'm sure haha.

Hi Murie
2nd paragraph reviewing should be review
6th paragraph 9 out of 10 based on. not 9 out of 10 and based on
Apart from that it is a good post.
Have a nice evening.

Thank you very much David. I made those corrections. Lol here I thought my English wasn't that good. Like I'd get a lot of suggestions change parts of my posts altogether.

Likewise to you.

Thank you.

Sorry guys, I opened this discussion from a general point of view. I understand that this discussion is more effective when I give you a link to check out. Let's start with my latest blog post.

http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/vacation-preparation-list-step-4-what-things-to-keep-in-mind-when-youre-booking-a-multi-stop-flight

Thanks so much!

Hi Muriel

I'll just do the corrections as a list, let me know if you don't understand any:

2nd para: In between - inbetween
4th para: terminal on your transition - 'on' should be 'of'
5th para: with you knowing this - with you, knowing this
6th para: Without further redo let’s - 'redo' should be 'ado'
Under Visa Regulations: what country you travel to - 'what country you're traveling to'

A very good post Muriel and I have left a comment.

Another aspect for consideration when transferring flights is whether your 2nd flight is from the same terminal. A lot of these international airports are huge and can involve a bus and/or train ride to the connecting terminal.

Ah Word has tricked me with some of the suggestions you gave me haha. I'll incorporate all of your suggestions :) Thank you so much!

I can relate to what you said about transferring flights within the same terminal. I did have to take an underground train from one side to the other side in Hong Kong.

Yes I know, that's what made me mention it as I've done the Hong Kong transfer on numerous occasions as I was living in China

Ah I see, yes then you have plenty of experience with that haha. Where would be the best place for me to mention this aspect? I could add it as a final paragraph to both the layover of more than 5 hours and the layover of less than 5 hours section.

Yes it is applicable to both, obviously more important when you're on a shorter layover when you have less time to spare.

Ok, I have incorporated your suggestions about connecting flights leaving from the same terminal. To avoid duplicate content, I tried to reword it a little in the "layover of more than 5 hours" section. Can you take a look for me and see if it's clear enough? Thanks!

Hi Muriel, yes that's great, except that it should read "leaves from a different terminal"

Alright, I have incorporated your suggestion. Thanks so much for your help!

You're welcome, look forward to reading more

Well, I have more posts that need proofreading. Hey, if I ask WA members to proofread one post, I might as well ask all of you to proofread all of my posts. One post at a time of course. Here you go:

http://howtofindthecheapestflight.com/2-leather-boarding-pass-holder-travel-wallet-id-us-passport-ticket-black-cover-review-a-good-way-to-make-your-trip-more-convenient

Thanks in advance!

A figuratively question mark - should be figurative
knew it. Why not - knew it, why not
I gave this product 9 out of 10 based on the pros and cons I have found with this product, you’ll easily see why. - the 2nd 'this product' should read 'it'
you can store them inside as well = 'them' should read 'it' (unless you change boarding pass to boarding passes).
at the airport it’s frustrating - at the airport, it's frustrating
and it get stuck - 'get' should read 'gets'
comes easily when - I would remove the 'easily'

Your English is really very good indeed, just a few little tweaks

Alright, I made your suggested "tweaks". Thank you so much for your compliment. I remember way back in 2010 when I went to Vancouver, BC for my internship, my boss was very impressed when she heard me speaking English. She was like "wow your English is so good, are you really from The Netherlands?"

Thanks for your help!

Great, your site is coming along very nicely too

I checked your site and it looks great. I don't know about the Filipino language but your English language looks fine to me.

I consider that to be a big compliment when you say that you're a stickler for grammar and correct English haha. Thanks so much Phyllis.

I still have to dive into the local language though, but my girlfriend and her family and friends discussed things in English in my presence. That was very considerate of them.

No I would say this is the right place for it. This post is certainly OK and I will watch out for any other posts that you make and advise you of any corrections that are required.

Well, if you see any of my current posts that needs corrections you can PM me about that too. Any suggestions for improvement can only make me a better writer. Thanks so much!

I wouldn't worry about that. I think you're doing fine. There are native english speakers who are no where near perfect english writers lol.
