Make sure you have Akismet activated it is a really good tool

Looks like you have gotten great advice from the folks here at WA. Good luck with you website

Like Marion said, DO activate Akismet. It works great for me and spam.

Akismet is activated and stops those comments by
holding in moderation, I guess to see if I mark it as spam or delete. I have done so accordingly. :)

http://www.karengatachurch.org/index.php/k2/k2-listing/item/81-lacinia-sed-convallis is chock full of spam. Do you need help in configuring Akismet?

Akismet has detected a problem.

Some comments have not yet been checked for spam by Akismet. They have been temporarily held for moderation and will automatically be rechecked later.

Please check your Akismet configuration and contact your web host if problems persist.
( this is the message I get from Akismet) but when I click the Akismet configuration it still says I need to log in or create an account and get my api key. I thought it was already set up when we followed the website set up with Kyles training. now it seems there is an additional step to take. ??

Here's Kyle's training on setting up Akismet and getting your API Key: You don't need to pay for Akismet.

Thanks Marion. I will definitely review that. It should answer all my Akismet questions. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I wouldn't try that in chase anyone is thinking about it lol

It is spam delete it.

deleted.

Most spam is generated by bots (automatic computer programs) who go around finding all indexed sites and trying to submit a comment. The goal is to simply get their comment with their links to whatever site or service they are trying to promote to as many sites as possible.

It is not from WA and every website has it which is why there are so many antispan plugins out there. The first comments any of my new sites get are always spam related because they just look for any indexed site and arent a real person who found me in a search engine.

They will sometimes blatantly promote something while other times just say very very generic things about your site. My favorite is when they say they are signing up to my newsletter when I dont have one... Or that they just love my theme and want to know where they can find it. Or WOW did you build this site all by yourself

In other words, they really like to compliment you most the time because it increases the odds you will just publish the post and say Thanks!

Just delete them and move on. As someone below mentioned also make sure to activate your captcha and your askiment if you havent already because it will help block the spam. There are some other popular plugins as well that I know some people use instead of those two such as antispan (i think thats what it is called). Those will help keep the spammy comments out of your way so you don't have to keep going through them and deleting them.

Thanks Autumn56

One comment was so generic, it almost sounded authentic, (I may have just wanted to BELEIVE IT cause it sounded like the kind of compliment you'de like to hear) It still really didn't make any sense, coming out of the blue. I DID delete them and mark as spam...

I Like it when I am expecting responses from the give and take thread here. Those ones will come out as authentic plus we can go straight back to the commenter and offer feedback for their site too.

Thanks for taking time to explain and respond. I appreciate it.

Teresa

Thanks for the clear explanation Jean, great job!

Other WA members know better than to leave spam comments. I have never seen any true spam comments on any of my sites from people at WA.. a few that aren't particularly useful maybe ("Site looks great - keep up the good work" that kind of thing), but not real spam like what you describe.

Akismet does a great job at filtering. It hasn't let any through to me yet. It has captured a couple of WA members comments as spam by accident, but not the other way round.

The spam comes from bots trying to get backlinks and possibly even traffic by you clicking on the URL they have left. As long as you don't approve the comment or click through, then they will have failed. Be wary of clicking any links left by spam comments, as viruses could be concealed.

It is rare for people in WA to randomly leave a comment on your site, and if they have, they'll usually let you know.. so that is how you can tell. If you have posted in the give and take thread, then comments will follow. It should be easy to tell what has come from WA and what hasn't 99% of the time.

Thanks for the explanation LittleClaire.

I understand now that it is an automated response. My akismet has stopped them, holding for my response. So I really have nothing to worry about.I appreciate your response explaining.

Thanks for taking this time. Have a great day.

Teresa

It is SPAM. Nobody from here sends those. A lot of us get them. Just click SPAM and delete.

thanks upsgirl. I did.

Cool!!!

Whatever their origin or intent. What is consider obvious spam and not related to your article, page or post. Do not approve their comment. Google might punish you for having useless comments.

Do you have Akismet installed?

Yes Eriken, Thanks I do. I realise it must have been misleading when I said I got comments.. but they ARE pending review, since my askismet has held them waiting for me to approved or not. I won't approved them of course.

I registered to listen in on the 10 steps to Google Ranking Webinar. I live in Adelaide SA . There suggestion says it will start MY 9:30 AM. What City should I compare the World

I believe the time is converted to your time.

Hi MsT, I would double check the initial email that is sent after you sign up for the webinar. Also, you should receive a reminder email an hour before the class goes live. I hope this helps.

Thanks Tony. I did go back to my email, clicking that link, however I ended up with the webinar software not loading on my computer. I tried it a couple of times. I probably need to contact the webinar forum support services. Each time I tried to run it on my computer I got an error and incomplete download. I'll probably catch the replay soon.

Webinar is starting in 24 Minutes.

In the admin area of my word press. where I have written a wee blurb of me.. I thought a thumbnail photo would be more personable. Can anyone give me a simple recipe for easily ad

Here is a great training video.

Thanks boomer.. I listed the 12 sites you shared for sources of free images. I browsed and started saving images from pixabay. While doing so I saw some posted images with the water mark of maybe something like shutterbay? from alternate sources but still on pixabay site. I also notice that at the top I see some listed as sponsored. Now I am wondering if I need to check the images I already saved,, (before I ad them into my website, to see if they are all free, regardless of if they are sponsored.. By just going to the site of pixabay or any of the sites you offered are all the pics free without infringements? Or do I still have to sort thru them?

Never add images that have watermarks. Those watermarks are there for a reason, to tell you that they are NOT free to use. If they were free, there wouldn't be a watermark on them.

If you read the discussion found within the link I provided you will definitely find the answer on how to add a profile image to your WP Dashboard. Usually people utilize gravatar to do this. Have fun!

I got this message in reference to website comments...(. Akismet has detected a problem.

Some comments have not yet been checked for spam by Akismet. They have been temporar

Your Api Key is sent directly to your email. To be honest though, I recommend Anti Spam Bee, I feel like it is way easier to use than Akismet, and it saves you a ton of trouble in the future :)

So maybe it was ok that I didn't have akismet activated on my website? I almost thought that the earlier trainings said to leave it. Now that I am getting website comments it came up? Being new at all this I am not sure but thought there was some anti spam program built in already?

Nope you have to add the plugin. Go to your dashboard and click on plugins and than go to and then go to Add New and type in "Antispam Bee" there you will be able to install and activate the plugin. Make sure that Akismet is deactivated and delete it as well.

is this..... ( CAPTCHA anti-spam methods to WordPress forms for comments, registration, lost password, login, or all. This prevents spam from automated bots. WP, WPMU, and BuddyPress compatible) same kind of thing. I already have this plugin activated

You don't need the SI captcha, I personally don't recommend it. It makes it a lot harder for people to respond on your site since they have to type in a code everytime and that can be very frustrating to some. I suggest that you don't install it. Either way you have to approve all the comments that are made to your site, so you are always given the option of deleting the spam messages. Hope this helps :)

Thanks Florida. I guess in Kyles traingings I was prompted to add those as a newby. I suppose what you are recommending is for the more advanced users. The plugins? regardless of the source are they usually free for your wordpress site? the ones I have activated were just the four basic ones included I think. Sounds like now is the time to fine tune. I like to be able to approve comments as they present thus allowing us to delete any spam we get. So this Anti Spam Bee? is it a free add on?

Yes it is completely free.

I had the same problem. Thought Akismet was activated but kept getting loads of spam. After going back through the lesson and getting the API key it has been great. Best wishes.
Harold

Thanks Florida. Just one more question. Do you think that your suggestion would be supported by Kyle. I am not doubting anything you say it just suggests conflicting advice. However I am all up for using what is going to be best in the long run yours suggests a a better user friendly result from your experience.

Nope the advice is not conflicting, I'm sure that if you ask Kyle that he will tell you that it is ultimately up to you. This is just my personal recommendation. Here is a post that I found which i believe will help you out:

Kyle & Carson recommend using both Si CAPTCHA and Akismet, which is what I do and all of the Spam comments I get every single day, go right into the Spam folder and are automatically deleted within 30 days. I love it!

Thanks Harold. I am finding from feedback that Akismet is not the end all be all. such as having just learned about 'anti spam bee' from https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/floridajf. who is an ambassador on this site. Learning more as I go. Guess we have lots of options. Her suggestion lends to this response... she sent me this in brackets ( our Api Key is sent directly to your email. To be honest though, I recommend Anti Spam Bee, I feel like it is way easier to use than Akismet, and it saves you a ton of trouble in the future :) )
