Google dance rant
OK, so I understand that Google likes a bit of a dance with new sites. But come on!
I start my first niche site, all bushy tailed and eager, pick a keyword which looks like it has good potential, but not necessarily brilliant- long tail, but a bit of traffic, good (ish) QSR and anyway, it's more about getting those initial rankings, building trust and content at the start right? Boom, in at number 12 in days, wohoo! So I get cocky, choose another few keywords, one of which has a competition of 5. Yes, I did say 5 and big traffic too.
Don't tell anyone, but I get a bit sweaty - the £ signs are literally rebounding off my eagerly bulging eyeballs. I submit the url via Google Webmaster Tools. Cannot be found in Top 300. What!? It only had FIVE sites competing with it. After a few days the page siddles in at 230. 230!!! Then it shoots up to 48. Ok, i get it Google, all good things come to those who wait. Looking good. The sales are coming. Wait...what? 130!
Right, so this is the Google dance is it - watching your low competition keyword posts waft and dance about like a whirling dervish between about 87 and 130 for what seems like FOREVER.
Even when it hovered at a lofty 'ahem' 87, I was thinking who are these other 82 little buggers. It only had 5 competing urls dammit!
Ok fine, boogie away Google, Im bigger than this. I can take a joke. In fact I love a good laugh. Except, er, This. Is. Not. Funny. Google. Your jokes are rubbish.
Never mind, I'll just do another couple of posts, whilst you fling yourself around cyberspace doing mad pirouettes based on algorithms no one understand (don't do a post on pirouettes or algorithms, you will waste far too much time on Google finding out how to spell them).
Anyway, who cares, I'm on 9 posts now, so building content slowly and surely. I will be Google's new best friend before you can shout Kyle and Carson. Ooooo - it's gonna love all this lovely content. Just wait and see.
Ok, quick detour to do a few tweaks and get a few comments on that number 12 initial post that got me all goose bumpy. I even managed to sneak a link for my product review onto the official product online forum (more goose bumps) - I'll be on the first page quicker than you can say Jaaxy I thought. Can i move from number flippin'11. You bet your long tail, low competition a**** I can't. Arggghhhh. Move you stubborn little beast. You're just being belligerent now.
So I do another post, which although it has quite a bit of competition (less than 100 but A LOT more than that blasted keyword with 5 competitors) flies in wham at number 7 on Google US the same day. Ooooo K. Makes no sense but i'll take it anyways.
Wait. It's way down in Google UK for some utterly bizarre reason and I suddenly realise Breville Hot Water Cup Dispensers (rockin' post hey:)) aren't really a big deal in the US (where the post is lurking at a scintillating 7!) According to serplab.co.uk anyway. Who I suddenly don't like much anymore. Breville are a British company and British people are searching for their blasted Hot Water Cup Dispensers. And where is my post? IN GOOGLE.COM at number 7! Argghhhhhhhh. Come on US - Breville is GREAT. You know you want one of their hot cup dispensers.
'Sigh' I could go on, but I shall stop now and do some 'real' work. But please, someone tell me it all comes out in the wash in the end and settles down :)
May all your dances be short.
