When Your Updates Don't Show Up On Your Site Flush DNS

This just happened to me this morning, I spent a long time last night editing an article, removing a gravatar, editing large amounts of text and links for a specific audience I have this morning but then went in today and none of my editing showed up, only the old version of the post.

Naturally first thoughts are 'it didn't save', all that work lost?

No :)

Sometimes we just need to perform one little trick: Flush DNS, it is as simple as typing CMD and opening up a command prompt box and into that you type ipconfig/flushdns

Here is a quick training I prepared earlier on the subject for moments like these to save me having to go research and figure it all out again.

I just did not have time for that this morning, so it got solved in seconds and I know I have no changes to make, they are all showing perfectly now.

Sometimes you have to go further and clear your cache, that is also in the training, but sometimes flush DNS works by itself.

So no worries if your updates aren't showing, just do a quick flush :)

Thank you.

You are welcome Alex, best wishes.

It's easy...I can do that! Thank you, Mary :)

Yes, it's really easy once you know what to type in, just a case of having those words on hand for when it happens :)

Good to know...never heard that before but it sounds easy enough. Thanks.

it's often one of the first troubleshooting steps site support ask us to perform, I had trouble tracking it all down first time so I made a training knowing the next time I needed it I'd have forgotten and need to track it all down again :)

glad your updates are all showing up then!

Thanks for the info, Mary!

Hi Mary, thanks for the info.

I got a question for you. My SEO tool has a flush dns on board in the menu for fixing link errors, 404, 400 and name them. So the flush functions as a refresh if I understand correctly? It is cool it has this function on board. :))

Thank you for your help.

Refreshing or reloading the site in itself won't bring up the updates, it takes an actual flush, that's what can make the panic button set in, but seems like you have something built in there anyway to take care of things.

Thank you Mary :)

Thanks Mary. Everyone loves quick and easy shortcuts!

the easier the better :)

Great to know how to push the right buttons Mary!

lol!

Anytime welcome if you like to push some saucer buttons Mike!

Thanks. Love some DNS flushing - you explain it much simpler than pesky tutorials like this :)

Also... easy Chrome shortcut (Windows) for clearing cache, too: CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE (& I'm pretty sure it's CMD instead of CTRL on a Mac)

Thanks Jason, kind words! I have noticed some pro-sites really have awkward tutorials alright!

Seriously - they need to get to the point ;)

I had to flush the DNS earlier today as well as clearing the cache on the website. Not seeing instant changes drove me crazy when it first happened a few years ago.

Interesting Marion, yes it brings a shock factor with it when those updates don't show, glad to know it happens even to a pro like yourself, which I mean in a good way :)

I was lucky the simple flush worked, that cache clearing means clearing passwords too and the browsers have made things so easy for us now that digging up all those passwords again is like 'work'

Using a different browser helps me to keep my sanity sometimes because changes show up when the browser doesn't have a cached image.

great point Marion, thanks :)

Hi Mary.
Thanks! I always recommend a flush (ipconfig /flushdns) and a clearing of cache (Ctrl + Alt+ Del) every now and then. Sometimes even a (netsh winsock reset) for a super purge. It's similar to how we humans work. :))

David

lol, yes sometimes we have to move things along, it's always great to have something on hand, ahem, like good advice/training :D

love your advice to keep things regular on that front :)
