No internet - How to get your laptop online with your phone
Hi guys, I'm currently surfing on my laptop via a Samsung Galaxy phone wifi, no idea this could be done and wish I'd known this a week before when I got cut off!
Sorry for not responding to most things this week but I got unexpectedly cut off from all things cyberspace when I moved house and discovered the recent roadworks crushed the phoneline that was supposed to have 'the fastest internet in the country' leaving me with nothing at all!
...helluva shock at first being cut off, survived a week, had to travel 10 miles to a cafe to catch up briefly one day - was forced to drink good coffee and eat excellent food just to access some wifi, poor me, however with their free wifi screaming at me 'everyone can see what you do' there were some things I was afraid to do, was my website in danger of being hacked, could I access my bank details, could I make purchases, how long can I sit in here before they throw me out, etc., and yikes, a lesson on security would be nice!

My cellphone is new, I'm on a learning curve with android, I'm only just beginning to release my grip on my beloved old 2007 Nokia and this new Samsung Galaxy phone which is actually an early xmas pressie, refused to let me access my emails and the keypad has a mind of its own, however my elderly neighbor today while out filling his bird feeders called me over for a chat and mentioned connecting the phone to the laptop, 'everyone knows how to do that' - so I thought, huh, a flippin monitor, the last thing I need is a bigger screen to tell me I can't access my email or for my phone credit to be chewed up in 5 minutes but no, as it turns out we can get full internet access on our laptop, and not at the price of phonecalls
OMG! I HAD NO IDEA!
You can actually connect your android phone to the laptop and use the wifi signal and surf on your laptop with all your chrome passwords and bookmarks and tabs without having to re-enter everything to a fussy phone that rejects half the stuff you put into it!
How to get your laptop online with your phone
So a quick google shows that every phone is going to do this a little differently and their simple instructions were a bit murky for me, but roughly speaking :
- We go into our phone settings
- Select Connections
- Mobile hotspot and tethering
- One step not mentioned on youtube that I saw was to go into data usage and click mobile data, mine doesn't work without that
- I didn't need bluetooth with the usb, and I didn't need wifi on either
And that's how to get online when you've no internet, simply find an elderly neighbour feeding his birds :)

Great idea but I have just one question. When you're connected to your phone are you using up data while on your phone? And, If you are connecting to the internet via your phones wifi, I wonder why you couldn't connect through the wifi on your computer to the modem?
Both are connected by wifi. Just asking. It's confuzzing to me.

Be sure to check with your cellular network provider to verify data limits as you will be using your data. You are using your cellular data to create a "hotspot" with your phone, which essentially converts cellular signal to wifi and intern will allow you to connect to the internet on other devices, such as your laptop. Hope this helps.
right now I have the 20 euros that came with the phone, no idea about anything else till I go into town and pin someone down...I'm sure they'll try to sell me something...and I've no idea about mobile data lol...
do we get fried the same way as with cellphones or is it more like wifi?
I don't have wifi, it's a cellphone using the cellphone network...I didn't know we could use that on our laptop these days
I did a price check and it's cheaper to be on the internet on the cellphone than to make calls with it
I have to go to a shop and ask about data and all that but I see someone has an answer below, LZorick
I love your idea, but I don't even have cell phone coverage. Such is life in rural eastern Wa. :((
I am glad you were able to discover wifi. You are no longer cutoff and able to at least able to get back to your site. I was offline for three weeks. Glad to have you back.

I type in wealthy affiliates site and it will ask for your login information just sign in, now thats how I do it
Hi Cynthia, I needed to use the laptop as the phone wouldn't take my email passwords and is harder to type on too...

Hi Mary that's a great idea but you cannot use Wi-Fi and data at the same time if there's no Wi-Fi only data you can use an to your laptop by turning on the hotspot
