A Lesson in Rank for Newbies

Someone blogged today about immediately signing up 4 members with a new landing page that is getting 20% conversion - this person has also said that she used the training at WA to put a roof over her head and much more.

"I have earned more in affiliate sales and sales from my writing website than I have ever made working 2 fulltime jobs and 1 part time job." <----after her first year at WA

But this knowledgeable and successful person has a rank at near 3000 at the time of writing, embarrassingly nearly 1000 places lower than myself and several thousand lower than a lot of other people who wouldn't know a fraction of what she does by now.

So why the low rank - well it looks like she spent her time on her website and training rather than chasing 'rank' position in here.

Lesson to newbies:

1. The rank of people in here is not a measure of success or knowledge, it is a measure of how active they are in here, that means writing blogs, answering questions [with a right or wrong answer!], or even just shooting the breeze.

2. Spending time on your website and the training is more important than pursuing rank within the community.

3. Some amazing people however do achieve high rank by creating training, but not everyone labelled ambassador or top 200 or carrying a 'badge' or writing a gazillion blogs is knowledgeable.

So the badge/ambassador labels/rank can be confusing:

High rank is not high knowledge or success, and low rank is not low knowledge or success either ;)

Very Good Point!

Very good point :).

Awesome post.

I believe it is best not to think about your ranking, and just focus on your business.
Ranking increases will happen organically provided you are constantly learning by taking full advantage of the courses, exchanging valuable ideas in WA, community, helping others, and applying your new knowledge to your business. It was devised by Kyle and Carson as a fun incentive to keep you on track with your goals. Then the money $ and success will come.

Yes, but some people [and the WA badge system] heavily emphasize chasing rank to new members, including my new members so I'm a little responsible for those people I have introduced, to share my experience rather than have them waste time or see any unnecessary obligation on their part to pursue rank, as it is time consuming - unless someone actually enjoys that sort of thing - but some people could leave if they though they had to put time into rank!

Really new members can just focus on the training and interact with everyone and learn and have fun and not take the rank seriously, either regarding their time or their trust, though they will soon get to know who really knows their stuff when they are here a while.

Yes I understand you need to protect your those you have recommended. Still I can understand why WA emphasizes the importance of rank to newbies too: they want the newbies to get excited to persist with the program, and even if those rankings generate that excitement artificially at times, quantifying "success" retain interests, and as in oir fascination with spots scorea, many of us derive excitement by keeping score.

Hello Moz, thank you for your interesting blog post! I'm not actually quite sure how the ranking works at Wealthy Affiliate, but I am very aware that I have seen people rank extremely high, but this doesn't actually mean that they are successful. Wealthy Affiliate is a great place to learn about Internet marketing and making money online, but I would suggest to anyone, forget about ranking, just learn and move your business forward. I have at times spent more time replying to messages and blog posts on Wealthy Affiliate, rather than writing my own blog posts which will potentially earn me money.

Please don't get me wrong, Wealthy Affiliate is an absolutely fantastic place to learn about Internet marketing, just make sure you get the balance right!

All the best to you Moz, Roy.

Me too Roy, especially in the beginning. Getting the balance right is a challenge, the interaction between people is fantastic and that networking is valuable, but the rank thing truly can be a diversion when some people emphasize it so much.

Thank you Moz, for your reply. It is a true, what you are saying!

Enjoy your day and keep up the good work, Roy.

Agree:)

Well said Moz!
