Motivation past January 2018.

Why are so many resolutions not kept past the first 30 days of any New Year? Is it because of the resolution or the person that’s making the resolution? Let’s take a look some of possibilities.

1) Choose a resolution. No matter which way we decide to go with a New Year’s resolution there will be sacrifice involved and it’s going to take some time to accomplish. I am not a huge fan of New Year’s resolution because I’ve found that they do not work for me. So I decided to read about New Year’s resolution and here’s what I found.

The first recorded New Year’s resolution was about 4000 years ago by the Babylonians. The resolution involved returning farm equipment that had been borrowed as their New Year coincided with the start of their farming season. I was shocked when I read this. I was trying to figure out how did we go from borrowed farm equipment to exercise equipment? This is quite a transition. Needless to say this is great if you can find and commit to a New Year’s resolution past January. Having a sincere desire will not be enough make this task come to fruition. It’s going to take a solid plan with daily motivation.

2) Same resolution from last year? If you find yourself with the same resolution as last year you may want to make some adjustment to your approach. For instance if your resolution is to lose weight by joining a different gym, then great! Most gyms will say 3 times per week for starters. Perhaps going no times per week to 3 times per week may not work long term. I recently read an article based on a one year gym membership. Most people will average about 54 times per year or about once a week of going to the gym. I say that to say this. If you are serious about any resolution wouldn’t it be better to have a modest pace over an extended period of time than to have a frenetic pace for a short period of time?

3) Type of support you’re getting. A journey of a thousand miles starts with that first step. Once you start on your path to improvement how will you get motivation for the long term past the first 30 to 40 days. One of the ways is to find a partner or a support group. While you may not always have motivation your partner may have motivation or someone in your support group may have motivation. The important thing is to start small and build from there and never quit. Take a break and don’t quit.

4) Your real Motivation. Finding your real motivation may be the most critical part of anything that we do. It’s one thing to be motivated but how do you stay motivated? One of the ways that can work is to :

· Start Small.

· Get support.

· Aim for progress and not perfection.

· Re-Motivate yourself.

· Remain Flexible.

Conclusion. It is not easy to stay motivated. If it were easy we would meet or exceed our expectations on a regular basis. We will need a lifestyle change. Your objective for the year should transition from being a New Year’s resolution to being a part your life. Why wait to start a resolution in January when you could start one anytime you want to. If I had an ailment right now and someone gave me medicine today to get better do you think it would be wise to wait till New Year’s to take it? Change is not easy and results do matter. Finding the right motivation will take time. All that is needed is to ask yourself one simple question. What will be your “why” for what you are doing. If it’s weight loss how will that make you feel once you lose the weight?

Some call them resolutions but some are really goals. Knowing the difference is key to fulfilling them. Goals need a structured plan, not just a declaration.

Thanks for sharing!
All the best!

No matter what it is if you put passion in , you get success out for any endeavor!

Some great tips here. I spent a couple of days in early January deciding what I wanted out of 2018. I am glad to say I am chipping away at these goals still in early February. I have some wonderful support and I think that is where it is making a difference. I have told people and now I have to keep going as they are asking me and I don't want to fail!
