Being In A Niche That Is Too Broad

Hey.

Some of you might know my archery site (check out my profile if you don't).

I am starting to think that I chose my niche too broad.
While I can't run out of topics or products to write about, I think a more targeted niche could bring me results faster.
After almost 8 months, I think I should have better results than I am having.

I have 80 posts and 10 pages on my site and while my organic traffic is increasing every month, my sales are still very very few.

Now, I won't abandon my archery site.
I worked too hard for it to just let it go. I will continue writing about archery.
What I am going to do is experiment with a new site. I will follow Jay's niche case study and create a website that is laser targeted and super narrow.
It will promote a single product (maybe with variations) and not a whole range of products like my archery site.
I will let you know how that goes as soon as I have set it up and have results (good or bad) to share.

What I want to give you on the way is this:

Choose your niche wisely!
It is best to write about a topic you know a lot about, but make sure it doesn't get too broad.
Narrow it down to stand out more to solve a specific problem!

Let me know how you think about the difficulty of choosing a good niche!

IM having this same problem. I am writing about health and wellness and there are so many things in that realm. My vision for it is to be a site the Mens Health where I talk about literally everything, but if I honed in on a niche I feel like I would run out of things to write on because it feels like I am cycling information. For example I write about building muscle as well as eliminating anxiety and how to have healthy hair lol. Do you feel like I should continue writing in various sub niches. Also what kind of traffic are you experiencing?

Chris

Hey.
I personally think that your topics are a bit too wide spread. ;)
I would stay on the physical side of things.
At the moment I am kinda stuck at 900-1000 visitors a month.
About 65% comes from goolge.
But that's not really good for a site that is 10 month old, in my opinion (expectation).

Moritz

Thanks bro, I absolutely will take your advice. I will stay on the physical side! Thanks my friend.

Chris

I like DJ-Yogi's idea you could give online lessons in archery

Yes, I could.
But at the moment I can't do that, because all of my archery equipment is almost 6000 miles away. ;)

lol perhaps a project for 2016 then hope your enjoying your trip

My "trip" is lasting 5 years already.
I left Germany to stay one year in Australia in 2010 and "got stuck" in Taiwan. ;)
If I had known that I'd stay here that long, I would have bought some new archery equipment here.
But I always think that this will be my last year.
lol

lol well a journey always has many roads, I always spoke about coming home been too many places and it has taken me 30 yrs to get here such is life detours eh.

Do you have thought about integrating a youtube channel? Or building and selling an online course?

Thanks.
Great ideas. :)
Especially the online course is a really good idea.
I have been thinking about starting making courses on Udemy for quite some time.
One instructor there earns more than 1000 USD a day!
He has really great courses (I took a few) and is established there now.
Definitely something to look into.

I do have a YT channel, but that one has nothing to do with my niche and I haven't uploaded there anything for a year.
I still get subsribers and views, though.

Problem is, that I am afraid that my accent could scare people away when I make videos in English. ^^

Don't care about your accent too much. Some Americans and english people will find it funny. And the rest of the world has an accent too!

Thanks.
That makes sense and is very reassuring.

And on the flip side, they may love your accent!! Cheers, Bunny

Thanks.
You can get a taste of my accent in my training videos here on WA. ;)

That is awesome! I'm new so how do I find one of them? Cheers, Bunny

The trainings are listed under the profile picture. :)

Your journey in the online marketing world sounds just like mine (you started with WA about 2 weeks after I did). I am now getting around 500 organic visitors a month. Last month I had 196 link clicks but only 5 items sold. However, this month alone I have already sold 15 items (all amazon so commissions are low). I am sure my increase in sales is because I promote toys and it is close to Christmas. It would be great if there wasn't a drop in January.

I also watched Jay's niche case study series and have been trying to come up with more targeted niche ideas. I have one idea and started getting a site ready but I am already thinking of abandoning it. It is definitely more targeted but I am not sure how well it will do and if there really is that much to write about. I haven't been able to come up with one item (or variations thereof as you mentioned) to promote.

Hi,
thanks for your comment.
Yes, our journeys are really very similar.
I think I will reach 600 organic visitors this month. But I don't have nearly as many clicks as you.
When I have 60 clicks a month, then I am already "happy". ;)

2 Sales so far this month, but unfortunately only some low price items.
Why doesn't anybody want to buy the 2000 USD crossbows I promote? ;)
But it is better when they wait a bit until my conversion is a bit higher anyways. :p

I do have an idea for my next site. It has a range of products that are all connected, but I still have to research keywords more and find a good domain name before I can get started with this for real.
It is definitely more targeted than my archery site, but not as easy to create as Jays website in the training.
His site can be done in just a few hours.
My future site is a bit more complex.
But we will see.

I hear you. I wish I could come up with a site like football snack helmets. I have tried finding something similar but no luck so far.

I am sure with all of the work you are putting into your site, you will be selling those $2000 crossbows! The most expensive item I am promoting is about $120.

The items for my new niche site (if I ever do more than have the about me page and privacy policy) are also quite inexpensive, but I guess that doesn't really matter if you have a lot of traffic and a lot of sales.

Yes, I think that will be fine when you get the traffic.

But everything can be sold.
Nathaniell once said that the price is not that important. (But maybe we shouldn't go too low. I try to stay above 50 USD if possible.)
We don't need to be afraid of selling things with a really high price. Some people don't care about the price if they really want something (and can afford it).

Yes, I remember reading that. I have been looking for some high ticket items to promote but haven't found anything that I know enough about or that I am actually interested in. For now I am sticking with my main niche site. Especially now that I am making sales. I want to keep working at it.

I face similar problems. But if super narrow, I wonder what one can write? Imagine another 100 posts in a super narrow topic, what to put there?

That's the difficulty about it.
A narrow niche but still enough to write about.
Help! ;)

I always had problem with the narrow niche concept. Why should it matter? If you have 100 posts in a broad niche and they are well ranked, you have traffic, and then you have 100 in a narrow niche with the same situation, what makes the difference? I guess the only difference is that visitors might feel you have more expertise if you go so narrow. But is it really so? I see authority sites with outdoor equipment, and they promote everything that you can imagine. So why should I focus myself on backpacks only? It makes no sense. If you are outdoor guy then you must know a lot about a lot.

Mh.
Your point of view makes a lot of sense, too.

Yes good luck! Keep us updated! I think I maybe sailing in the same boat. I wouldn't have thought archery was so broad but
I know nothing about it..

Thank you.
Turns out it is quite broad. :D

Let us know, Moritz!
Ed

I will. :)
