Instant gratification has always plagued our society. But the advent of the internet has put our attention deficit as a nation on steroids. Visitors on the web now have the attention span of a gnat.

With billions of web pages cluttering the internet, how can you get your blog posts to stand out so that visitors stay on your page? Here are 5 tips that will make your visitors stay on your site and read your posts.

1. Use Bulleted Lists

Bullet points are great when writing your blog post because bullets summarize and highlight the most important ideas you're trying to convey. Your reader doesn't have to read every detail of your post in order to get to the point. Remember, most people scan - they don't read.

2. Highlight Selected Key Words

Highlighting key words helps your readers scan through your posts faster. When I say highlight, I mean use italics, underline or bold key words throughout the article. I'd say use your highlights at least once or twice per paragraph.

3. Craft Meaningful Subheadings

If you have a block of text that goes on and on forever, your visitor will hit the back button fast. Break up your text by adding meaningful subheadings. A subheading tells you what the upcoming paragraph is about.

Make the subheading interesting and informative for the person.

Subheadings can be stand-alone, or numbered. For instance, notice my subheadings in this article. You know that under the subheading "Use Bulleted Lists", I'm going to be talking about why bulleted lists are important to making your blog posts more enjoyable to read.

4. Use One Idea Per Paragraph

Don't try to cram in 3 and 4 ideas in one paragraph. It's information overload. Take one idea, expand on it a bit, and keep moving. Otherwise, your readers will get confused. Above all, keep your paragraphs short.

Use no more than 3-4 lines to express your idea. If you need more lines to expand on a particular idea, make a new paragraph, and write another 3-4 lines. Readers hate blocks of texts.

5. Use Pictures

Nothing is more boring than a long piece of text without pictures. Pictures make your article interesting. They captivate the essence of your message. They also make your readers want to stay on your page.

Conclusion

In sum, visitors to the web have a short attention span. They don't read. They scan. If you use the tips in this article on your next blog post, you'll gain and keep your readers' interest in your message.

Great article! Readability and visuals are really important in keeping visitors on your site. If proper spacing and styling isn't used it can seem overwhelming and they might just leave.
Lots of good tips!

Wish you success!
