western civilization comes of age

I am fascinated by the changes that took place in the ancestral home of many of us. Featuring
what was and is now. For better reference I have provided two pre glacial European maps

European civilization began in earnest at the end of the last ice age. This occurred about 12,000 years ago. Before that cave paintings in southern France and Northern Spain were the greatest indicator of civilization. The earliest period was titled the Franco - Cantabrian which occurred about 40,000 years ago.

After the ice receded and vegetation appeared, gathering of seeds and vegetable centered agriculture became dominant. Animals followed, primarily the woolly mammoth. This made man the hunter as well.

Before that period, there was human activity as early as 200,000 years before as human settlers first migrated out of ice free Africa into Europe The cave paintings which are the earliest record of sustained activity, leave a lasting legacy of early man's interest in Europe.

There were incursions from Africa (Carthagineans) and the Nile basin as well as the Tigris - Euphrates in Asia. However, the early Greeks were recognized as the first formal European empire builders in the pre- Roman period. Now early Europeans became invested in leaving rakes and hoes as well as spears.

Following the examples in Africa and Asia, formal buildings were first designed and erected. These were followed in short order by designed currency in coins. Now the legacy of early commerce began. Trade routes were established and the concept of the marketplace became common.

It is further amazing that the passage of some 2,000 years has brought transformed country governments with full economic automation and effective local governments. Now we have Wealthy Affiliate with sophisticated marketing and a loose planet wide government and the circle is complete. What comes next? You can be sure the forward thinkers in Wealthy Affiliate and other economic leaders will rise to the occasion. The challenge will be to map these efforts to whatever political jungle there is to fit them to!

Thanks Mike!
Another fascinating history lesson. Keep them coming, I love this stuff!

It's really interesting! There was a time when the UK was not an island. I wonder what our economic and political relations would be if Europe were still united as in postglacial air.

Ingrid

It's getting back to that with the Chunnel Ingrid!

Mike, this is another great blog! Very interesting and I could follow the maps believe it or not, lol! Have a great weekend.
Peace💗

I've been researching Florida's geologic history and was surprised that the foundation for the land known as Florida now was once part of the African continent before Pangea split apart. All terribly interesting stuff but after reading your post, I'm left to wonder...

At what point did effective local governments go extinct? I'm sure it's been long enough to find fossilized remains cuz they've been suspiciously absent now for quite a while. ;-)

Hard to tell. Maybe the railroad changed America!

They definitely had something to do with it. Cornelius Vanderbilt was quite the influencer in his day. :-)

Florida is actually a bed of prehistoric lime stone

The carbonate Florida Platform was built on mostly Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks that once formed part of Africa and South America.

In simplest terms, Florida was created in three stages.

Phase 1: The Age of Plate Tectonics (More Than 160 Million Years Ago)

Phase 2: The Age of Carbonate Production (160–23 Million Years Ago)

Phase 3: The Age of Siliciclastic Invasion (23 Million Years Ago–Present)
From

The underlying, deep bedrock is similar to that found in the Appalachian mountains, but core samples have tested to be more consistent with those from the African continent dating back three hundred million years or more.

This basement rock forms the backbone of peninsular Florida. In some places, the carbonates are approximately 14 kilometers thick. Then you have the quartz sand that overlays virtually the entire Florida Platform a.k.a. Florida's sunny beaches and loamy soil.

Limestone makes up a significant layer supporting the vast karst regions that enable us to enjoy the worlds largest known freshwater aquifer. It's also the cause behind our sinkhole issues.

For anyone interested in geology, Florida is a fascinating place to live.

This is fascinating. The written information is so interesting, but the maps had me hooked! I have always been interested in early history, but never studied it. Now your post has had me scouring for information about human activity in this area from the 200,000 years before human migration from Africa into Europe!
Thanks for such a thought-provoking post, Sue :)

My pleasure Sue!

Really like the analogy... and the research well presented ... thank you for your post always interesting ... cheers ... Michel
