Retirement regions

Demographic information can be invaluable for business and retirement reasons For instance I am learning that not only do I live in a great area weather wise south by a hair (Maryland), but have the best ranked cost of living blended in as well.

Though I've only lived there some of my life, I'm not surprised to see the mountain states ranked as high. Both areas rank high in healthy climate and wealth opportunities in employment.

A troubling trend centers on the "rust belt" region of the Midwest and the northern latitudes. This area has been in a slump since the 1970s since the bottom dropped out of Big Steel. One cannot generalize on demographic data. It often takes getting a notch lower in the grass to get a more accurate picture.

The northern states have a worse time of it, especially near the Canadian border. In new England and the Pacific Northwest liberal economic ideas have taken hold, This has resulted in greater taxation rates which depress the economy. This feeds on itself driving businesses and people both from those areas.

Many social ills follow the decline of an industrious economy. Life gets boring and some people give up hope altogether. This has led to the Opiod Epidemic. This affects the younger people who often give an area it's life purpose. It is a relatively inexpensive way to become addicted, leading to it's draw. Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio regions are the most affected.

Both the Heartland and Great Lakes regions are affected in a way that shuts down any desire to move there. The mountain area is also affected. The northeastern region of Montana and northwestern North Dakota have depressing cold weather. It is flat and dreary and depressing to many.

The southwestern area includes southern areas of the Pacific, Mountain and South Central regions. Though not highlighted on the map these areas show promise. A reenergized NASA boosted in concert with Elon Musks' Mars initiatives and the existing Houston infrastructure are jump-starting initiative.

Driverless car test areas are being developed in Nevada, Southern California and Arizona. This is a land based initiative that will transform this area

In general, by paying attention to demographics we will be on the point of the spear regarding awareness of new investment initiatives. The best place to be going forward!

Cool! Great info for U.S.. I’m from Canada, wonder if there are similar stats for up here.
I’m definitely looking forward to semi-retirement...

I think Canada mirrors the northern fringe of the US next door!

Thanks for sharing these very interesting stats Michael. This is something I will keep in mind for the future.

Thank You. I'm sharing this with my husband. Nudge nudge.

Great 👍

Good afternoon my friend the statement said I'm getting ready to make to you I am sure they're going to be unlike any other statements that people are going to make concerning your posts so hold on to your seat belt I can understand retiring from your present employer you have put your time and your effort for many years now you want to walk away from it it's a beautiful thing you deserve it however don't put yourself in some place where you got all these old people hanging out on the beach waiting to die keep yourself busy be acted always it will keep your mind and your body healthy you will live longer statistics have shown people who retire and go to Florida and do nothing but relax for the rest of their lives the majority leave this world before they had to please my friend keep your mind busy keep your body busy reach for new goals occupy your time in an accurate way this will ensure that you will live a longer quality life may Prosperity be with you

Funny thing -- I would not live anywhere but Alaska. And, since I am never retiring, demographics won't affect that decision.

Interesting charts. I guess the people in AZ, which I hear is popular with retirees must distort the results for the mountain states. The chart says 70% are happy with the weather or climate in the Mountain states.

Maybe they took the survey in the summer after a couple of exceptionally mild winters. lol

The most common reason that I hear older people wanting to move away from Colorado is because of the winters.

They should try moving one state north Wyoming, Montana too have killer winters.

Very useful information, Mike, particularly for us. Many thanks.
Colette and Philip

As the years go by you start to ponder these things, there can be a gravitational pull to stay put or to go. For marketers this kind of info can be gold.

I may just have to stay in #1. Although I am not a fan of the winters.

Same here Glen!
