overwhelming useful data
Our world is being overturned every mini second by exponential information growth. Information manifests itself in data. I can remember taking a college course in world history fifty years ago in 1965.
The course discussed divisions of human endeavors at the time as "break boundaries" The latest division then was the information age. Data was initially stored in large single server units. As resisters dwindled in size there was more miniaturization per ounce and cubic centimeter.
Next came multi server clusters and farms in which information and its data was distributed far and wide. The internet became the external circuitry of choice. The figures here are 4 years out-of-date. I would give at least a conservative 5% growth factor since then. Some rocking data above is hard to wrap your mind around.
- 90% of the data in use today created in the last two years. Enough of a job providing security for such a quantity.
- Interpolating from the trend, $100 billion in big data today.
- More than 20% of all world data attributed to China in two years!
- The scale shows the upward creep to the monstrously large figure of the exabyte. Scale comparison to the library of Congress archives and the number of DVDs out there give this meaning.
- Look at the deep orange small excerpt about websites. If that doesn't turn ones' interest to web development it's hard to figure why not!
- Effect on size of online customer shopping carts
- The effect of mobile data is nothing short of awesome. It has reached a 2,000 % increase (1,000/year) in the last 20 years.
- With a negative impact of over 3 trillion per year in the US economy, one can see the necessary concentration here. Big corporations have got the message and have turned this interest in this direction with funded projects big time!
- Video and imaging is growing by leaps and bounds as an augmentation of data.
- This is going to translate in the labor market to many needed information technology jobs.

Oh yes...information is one of, if not the most, important commodity in our culture/society today.
The sheer volume of what is gathered, bought, sold and traded on an hourly basis world wide is also overwhelming!
Then take how that information is used to influence our decisions and it becomes downright scary!
