Negative People You Can Tell in 5 Minutes

There have been a few posts llately abut negativity in our blogging. This is inexcusable!

It can be destructive to have a disruptive negative person in your work community, or in your life. Unfortunately, most of them don't reveal themselves immediately. Many are friendly at first but it is a disarming characteristic.

An alert person can look for telltale signs. You have to be a sociable search engine and "crawl" people who exhibit these characteristics. Be on the lookout for certain signs. Unawareness can cost you your mood, productivity and well being!

Many of these characteristics reveal themselves in 5 minutes or less;

  1. They badmouth others. A former boss, a certain CEO. If they it to them they'll do It to you.
  2. They complain. Constant griping and bellyaching.
  3. Ask for special allowance. Delayed delivery, preferred treatment
  4. Boasters and braggarts. Attempting to influence you as to how "good" they are
  5. Putting you on the defensive. Finding yourself in rebuttal mode
  6. Petitioning you to work to please them. Asking for favors
  7. Have no concern for your expressed problems in conversation
  8. You do not feel comfortable after conversation. An emotional defense system. Listen to that inner voice!

In a global community make allowances for different culture. But if the feelings continue walk away!

I have experienced that with some people. When you tell them about what you are trying to accomplish, they tell you ..that's a scam, it does not work, you are wasting your time etc., etc.
I take your advice Mike and keep away from them. I will prove them wrong!
Thank you
Norberto

Beautiful!!Mike!
I, almost didn't open, this...negative title...Monday morning...But, it was from, Mike!! Always, something, uplifting! Now, away, from the water cooler, Barb...
There, also, appears, to be an "air" , above, them...arrogance?...
Aloofness...Can , usually, put out a strong vibe...
Remember, warm "fizzles" and cold "prickley" ...TEACHING, DAYS, WITH K-2...
Warm, folks, are "meet" and "click" ...Many, people, in the Sandbox, were meet and Click!...Fun, folks to hang, with and work/play!

Morning Mike! I've been lying low lately working on other things but still following along here. I've seen the posts to which I think you refer to.

I find you to be the epitome of optimism! You generally respond to most everyone's post always offering something positive & supportive. You take things on the chin like a trooper too! Even when I give you a hard time! which you know I love to do! ;-)

I like the way you handle addressing the negative posts by doing a post of your own to turn it into a lesson complete with warnings and good advice on where our focus should remain.

Grateful to have you here my friend!

I love ♥ ornery friendly people Cindy. Thank you !

Negativity does not get you anywhere in life. In almost all cases people are negative as they are trying to gain control over you by elevating themselves so they can be above you. In most cases it is also jealousy as people dont want other people to get ahead so they naturally put you down. Positive people make the world go round but lots of people have the desire to keep you small so they can rise...at least in their minds.

I agree. You can’t build up a people oriented business by tearing people down...

Lately, there has been a rash of negative, divisive comments from well meaning, but narrow-minded higher ranking members of the WA Community. Posting derogatory memes toward WA members who hold different opinions than yours does not bode well for anyone in WA. The goal of the Community is to build each other up, not tear each other down.

Let’s show more respect for our fellow members. As a familiar song goes, “There are no good guys. There are no bad guys. There’s only you and me, and we just disagree.”

Regards, Art

Hi Mike Yes, I have been on Live Chat for some help and have seen people re-hash how BAD it is, over and over, and I think that they think that they will get better help by victimizeing themselves.

When I ran large jobs like grocery stores, as an electrician, I would ask my crew to come to me with an ANSWER instead of a question. This would show me that they have half the answer, and with a few prompts, they figured it out themselves, now he has solved the problem and gained confidence.

I have been setting up my social sites this weekend, and my RANK this morning dropped by over 1100. All the little things that keep us going, the mini successes, and my ultimate goals.

Thanks Mike....You make me think.....and ACT

Good Morning Mike,

I fully agree. We all might have a bad day now and then but a constant negative attitude over months or even years will ruin your health. By the way, I think you missed my Christmas wishes, here comes. Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I commented on your pos. I'd love to experience a Christmas in the Netherlands

Muchas Gracias.

De Nada!

I was surrounded by a few of these negative people the last couple of years. It took me some time to come to my senses and really drained my energy.

I am definitely much better now, since leaving them behind. Your post reminds me of the ugly but grateful that I am moving along with no negativity. At times, we need to be reminded. Many thanks.

We jokingly refer to such characters as ‘morale vampires,’ mike!

I think the textbook workplace psychopath is on the extreme end of this negative spectrum. But even decent people who’ve gotten into a rut might adopt negative habits that drain their teams from time to time. A good team can help see them through these times... a not so good Team might just amplify it.

It's difficult to be around negative people as they can put a negative "drag" on you if you're not careful.

Certain personality types are also inclined towards pessimism instead of optimism - those who realize and want it to change, do (it's unpleasant to be miserable all the time!), but many never take the time to do a "self-check" - they just wonder why many people avoid them and that makes them even more negative...it's difficult for such people to get out of the spiral of negativity, unfortunately!

Thank you for the interesting topic, Mike!

Thank you for weighing in Nat!

Positive people breed positivity. Negative people, well, breed negativity.

But the thing that happens when you get the two together is that positivity can actually overpower negative in many cases. People are often times negative for a reason and if you can get past that and continue to stay away from their "negative traps" you can turn them around.

At the end of the day we all want to be happy and positive, it just feels better. ;)

Sort of like setting a backfire. Thanks for the featured comment Kyle!

I love this backfire analogy. Beautiful.

Thank you Ivy.
