Does anyone here remember encyclopedia Americana or Britannica? What about Encarta? There are places where hard copy newspapers are no longer printed. Because advertising uses the internet, it is no longer cost effective to print large hard copy ads. This has lead to the cost of a newspaper going from 15 cents to $1.50 or more

In the same way that cell phones are making pay phones obsolete, directories are going on line. You hardly hear the term white pages or yellow pages any more.

"After 244 years, Encyclopaedia Britannica will no longer be printed.

It's sad, but surely not the end of civilization as we know it.

Let's see a show of hands: How many of you didn't even realize the company was still printing the 32-volume set?

It was a surprise to realize those encyclopedias have been around longer than the United States has been a country. It was sad to hear the news, but it feels a bit like hearing about the loss of a friend years after he died, a friend you didn't bother to stay in touch with after he saved your behind many times."

The following gives some idea of the evolution of our current environment as a result of the internet!

I have both Britannica and World Book. I bought them when my son was born 35 years ago.

What about National Geographic? I still love the iconic yellow border on the front page and the maps which are published separately now!

I remember them, amazing. I haven't seen one in a long time. Tracey

What a pity, Mike! I love to read, I even love the smell of books! What can I say? :(

I understand Rebecca coming from a county that pioneered so much of written civilization!

Although in Egypt I have pondered over the lost works of the library of Alexandria. I often wonder what has been lost to civilization due to fires and pillaging!

Me too, Mike! And how much lost wisdom too! There would be books about things that we haven't even dreamed of!

Yes, Looking at the long term history of the world, we seem to re-invent the wheel again and again. is it because we lose sight of historical events and end up solving the same problems again and again? The evidence from Indian, Chinese and south American civilisations is that they faced the same economic and social issues that we face 5000 years on.

I've thought of writing an adventure novel about world shaking events spawned from discoveries of those lost scrolls!

Let me know when you have a first draft, I would love to read it. Thanks Mike.

I had a full set of Encyclopaedia Britannica which I think was my grandad's legacy (from around 1937 I think). Problem is, I haven't a clue what happened to it.
I also have a full history of Test Match cricket scorecards (I know, you have to live in a cricket playing country to appreciate and understand this!) dating from the first Australia vs England match in 1877.up to the 2000 - 01 series between Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Unlike the EB, this Wisden book series will hopefully be update in print and a big glossy book, for the long term future.
Sigh......
