Duplicate content
This concern is always present and never ending.
Google's position states it is NOT considered a penalty if Google finds your content is not unique. It is also not a penalty if Google refuses to rank your page above your competitor. Google picks the best way to show users based on who and where they are. Duplicate content will appear to users where germane.
This newest advice from Google is helpful in that it clarifies Google’s premise. This is as follows.
- Duplicate content isn't penalized
- Uniqueness and added value rewards over all
- Duplicate content is filtered
- Duplicate content can confuse and retard Google's discovery of new content
- Google usesXML sitemaps as best practices
- Duplicate content won't work wonders with your marketing
- Google desires that you use canonical reference pages to make a better user experience
According to web expert Neil Patel The words “duplicate content" horrify writers and marketers of all ilks. This term is used by people who are not SEO experts who have'nt read Google’s guidelines on duplicate content. They just routinely assume that if something appears more than once online, literary doomsday is coming.
Let's look further at this myth Rankings across your domain will be affected by duplicate content. The one exception was where a homepage text was put into a press release erroneously and went out over the entire internet
Hundreds of pages flooded the web. Google went into meltdown. The domain was then black listed. A reconsideration request was filed. Eventually the domain had to be re indexed.
What caused this uproar?
- Timelinesss All the content appeared at once
- Volume: The text was multiplied by the hundreds
- Context: It was the copy of a new domains' home page
It didn't take much for this to be marked as spam.
In many instances many popular blogs re post original content. It won't rank but, it won't hurt domain credibility.

Hey Mike,
Exciting topic of discussion.
Google is looking for the best material for her users but when more than one piece of content contest for a single spot on SERPs, Google takes instructions from canonical tag and ranks the original content.
Or, the giant will simply prefer the content on the domain with higher authority. After all, uniqueness is the best way to stand out.
Interesting Mike.
What do you say about those scam products that automatically create content for all their customers? Some of which may be exact replicas.
Avoid duplicate content is a challenge for me, I try to please Google in everything I can. I will not be 10 I hope to get to 8. Excellent topic that you played. Thank you!
Good article. To make sure that all is in good order ,check your post on Grammarly. Apart from spelling mistakes, post uniqness is checked . However, alert for plagiarism can show up even when sentences in completely different posts match one another. This is silly but it feels better when content is 100% unique.
Great insight. I've always worried in the back of my mind about this. Once I think I got a "your content is not unique" warning when posting but, after some thought, I was like "I know I wrote this in my own words so if it's like something already out there then so be it." and I posted it anyway. I didn't notice any adverse effects.
Thanks for clarifying though. It helps to set my mind at ease.

I wonder if WA’s site content has got a little more relaxed in this regard. I use to get not unique message if I used a quote but I don’t seem to get that anymore.
I was putting quotes in images in my fervor to make sure all my content would be considered unique but sometimes this is just not how the post should read so I gave up on that and just post how the content flows and if it’s not considered unique then so be it.
Good post, thanks Mike
