Recently Courtney (Codevonish) reported on the devastating effects of hurricanes on his Caribbean island. He has been fortunate in that his galleries weren't ruined.

The islands in his area have been hit repeated times (at least 3) by the repeated effects of different hurricanes. This is unprecedented this year. 2017 will go down as the worst year since 2005 (Katrina) for hard hitting storms!

I am reporting live from Delray beach FL were I am attending the American Writers and Artists copywriting conference this week. I feel more ready than ever to write good copy as I have been practicing with constant blogging.

The side that I am on (Atlantic shore) didn't get smashed as much as the Gulf Coast in the west. As it is there is a lot of palm fronds lying around. In talking to the airport shuttle driver I learned a number of things not evident in the news about the US (still territory) of Puerto Rico.

It appears that 90% of the islands' forests have been smashed flat! The El Yunque rain forest, the biggest tropical rain forest associated with the US, has been leveled. The damage is incalculable!

Puerto Rico is indistinguishable from Haiti on the next up island of Hispaniola where forests have been leveled for generations. The timber is used for charcoal by the dirt poor inhabitants The country is so devastated in it's own right that from space it appears a clear cut zone from the Dominican Republic next door!

The people of Puerto Rico need to be constantly in our prayers. There may even be damage to the stone foundations of San Morro castle that has stood the test of time since built by the Spanish in the 1500's

The one cheerful thing today is the Susan B, Komen breast cancer initiatives sponsored by some airlines. It's cheerful to see a sea of pink in a world of turmoil!

I enjoy talking about world events good or ill for such a global community as ours!

I didn't realize the rain forest was gone. I'm glad that I had an opportunity to go there. Perto Rico is a huge tragedy. As American citizens we should be ashamed of our government.

I have been to Haiti in the 60s and again 20 years ago. I saw many oil drums where many people slept. Poverty was rampant.
It is much worse now.

This year has been so bad between fires, hurricanes and earthquakes. It is all so sad.

What will it take for mankind to change? we need to think very very hard, there must be a creative way out.

It is sad to hear and some prayers and donation may help.

Thank you. I did not realize how bad Puerto Rico has it. I just now prayed, and will keep praying for them.

There has been a lot of misunderstanding about this year's storms/hurricanes but you are giving us a good picture, so, thank you!

So terrible about Puerto Rico. Love you views and information.
Dan

Sorry for all the devastations.

Thanks for this info on world events Mike, it's good to know...

You are so right Mike about 2017. It will go down in history as the year of the storms. I live in Louisiana where we are accustomed to tropical storms from the gulf. I wouldn't say we are used to it, though. I remember joking with my inlaws when I relocated here from Texas in 2003 when they spoke of hurricanes I would ask what about having a hurricane party? I never had one before and always heard of them.
Once you have lived through a hurricane, you never wish to have another one. Here in the south, we will lose electricity anywhere from a couple of days to maybe a week. Let me tell you something. Living without electricity, once you are spoiled by having it, roughing it is an ordeal. Believe me. My definition of roughing it is staying in a motel without a pool. LOL.
If you are without electricity for more than four days and no generator for partial power, all your food in the freezer and refrigerator is spoiled. This is when you see everyone in the neighborhood outside cooking the food, sharing with neighbors, etc, because, well, its a lot of food getting cooked.
What Courtney has been enduring is unprecedented by any stroke of the imagination. It will be some time before he and his island are back to as it was before the storm. I pray for him to recover and hope he never sees another storm as devastating as this year has been.
Ken

I hope not Ken and definitely not this year.

Always love reading your posts. Yes, do bring in the world events in between your pPosts. One needs to be connected with the outside world too :)
