Denial process

I used to think that the Flat Earth Society which actually does exist was trumpery. A fetish for retreating into a weird view of the world. Rampant in places like London it is a traditional topic for pub meetings.

But it's more than that. Many actually believe such a premise. There are people who think:

  • visually everything is a staged smokescreen
  • phonetically heard voices are always real
  • smells are faked
  • taste is faked
  • sensation of all sorts is affected by hypnotic techniques

Some folks are into total denial. When you have no anchor for reality or standard to base it on, these are impossible to convince. You want to steer your marketing aspirations and channeling away from such!

Closed mindedness is rampant in many places. You can find it in our forum as well. You can tell it when some criticize you for rule breaking without studying out the charge or interpreting it in full.

These rarely have any thing constructive to bring to the table but are first up when it comes to criticism. While rules are necessary, even critical, they should not be used as a way of one upmanship as I have seen happen here.

We have the best training and resolution on the planet. All our answers are here! I want to see that parlayed into a terrific world forum!

Yup. Pretty sad this is.

Hi Mike!

Have you ever seen the peer-reviewed journal published by the American History Teachers’ Association? It’s fabulous, and one particular edition was completely focused on the history and culture of conspiracy theory in the US.

Many of the early conspiracy subcultures and storylines that journal edition presented persist today. It’s a fascinating discussion of why such ideas are attractive.

I think sometimes, apart from the delicious storytelling that conspiracy offers, one is more prone to believing it all if the world just seems too difficult and complex to understand. The story form promises to simplify it all.

...If one doesn’t understand the myriad drivers at work in the world’s events, it all looks like invisible forces, right?

...And if in your own personal life, your daily experiences make you feel helpless, and as if you have no power or choice, those kinds of stories will also be attractive explanations.

So, I really believe that helping people to understand the complex is a start to unravelling toxic misperception. And showing them all the ways they can actually take action and make a difference, and how much they matter, can help to empower them in ways that the conspiracy story - which repeatedly says that you are helpless - can never do.

As for the flat earth - that may be a myth within a myth. The ancients calculated the circumference of the spherical world thousands of years ago! I like the way this writer tracks the idea:

Cheers!

My 16 year old grandson blames the Illuminati!

Hmmm seems to me like an interesting blend of two separate topics...Closed-mindedness is a negative and non-productive state of mind which none of us here at WA would want to own!!

But then you include the topic of a flat world community and conspiracy theory believers....and I can't help wondering, wouldn't they think that it's WE who are the closed minded ones for not believing and a flat world and in the conspiracies?
What do you think? :)

I think this would require a two dimensional mindset in a 3 dimensional world Soraya!

Hmm....good answer :)

Good Morning Mike,

In the moment quite a big part of the US population is stuck in a denial process, denying the obvious. I wish they would take their - you know, what horses wear on their heads to not see sideways, off. I think this percentage are the ones who think the earth is flat.
Have a great day,

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Thank goodness we had Portuguese and Spanish explorers venturing from the southern part of the Iberian peninsula to prove it round Taetske!

Some people should mind their own. I was brought up to believe that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

Thanks for sharing. Close mindedness sucks. It's chains.

Wow, I did not know there were still people out there like that.
It's almost laughable that they actually think that when it's been proven the earth is round and so on.

They are right about one thing though. There are conspiracies and they are spreading them.

I know a couple people who believe the earth is flat, that we are mixed with reptilian and alien DNA, that everything is a conspiracy.

It amazing what is at your fingertips out there and at WA.

Interesting website. Jay

Those closed-minded ones are so far left, they walk on a side... And then they can only be propped up by a match-stick.

Despite this, they still believe quite strongly that they are standing tall.,

David

Indeed. there you go!
