competition

There have been queries about why have a ranking system. Those questions are a result of a negative view fostered by setbacks that are inevitable in any contest in life!

Competition is very healthy. It is basically a form of growth which is spurred by intense effort. We encounter it every day of our lives. Competition shapes our very character and is essential to our business.

No business develops or continues in stagnation. A car parked on a siding is going nowhere. Business requires work and work requires overcoming inertia.

In Wealthy Affiliate the developers have wisely established a ranking system with Ambassador at the top of the classification. This is a "hands on" method of developing

  • interaction
  • leadership
  • helping others
  • promoting education
  • using God given talents in an effective way

and countless other methods of business practice inherent in Wealthy Affiliate.

No system is perfect nor can it overcome a feeling of being slighted by those suffering downturns in productivity or fortune. Everyone here needs to understand this before doing even one WA post with ranking in mind.

The primary goal that Kyle and Carson are endeavoring to bring across here is caring competition. This is a perfect model for business development and considering the reach of WA world development!

got to disagree, nothing wise at all about how the rank system pans out in here and people have been leaving because of it, ask me how I know...though some members left excellent comments on a blog I wrote about how everything Kyle and Carson just goes up in smoke when fakes get top of the leaderboard

competition is when good standards win, imagine the olympic gold going to someone who maxed their comment limit every day! That's not what google wants, not what universities want, and not what most members in here want either and many of us are sick of delusional ambassadors and now 'top helpers'...

The ranking system is not about who has the most knowledge, skills or experience though, it reflects those who are contributing to the community only.

When I first came I thought those in the top 200 must be at the top of their game, have money producing websites and years of experience. They were the masters so to speak.

This is obviously not the case and once this is understood and the rank viewed solely as those who are social and contributing it does not become the farce some seem to think.

Have I missed something as this is my take on how it works?

It's an incentive Mary and it sometimes devolves to chance and risk ass all business incentives can!

The ranking system works to encourage people to interact, to pay it forward and to offer help via answering questions and offering comment.

It works because it is human nature to want to do better. I am not a competitive person by nature, but as my ranking got closer to that 200 mark I started to actually want it.

So yes I did double down and sought out questions to answer, I thought about how I could add value blogs (even got one in the Top 10 a few days ago, oops there’s my non-competitive nature kicking in lol). And I spent some time in live chat getting to know other members and helping out when I could.

Because of this I think I have contributed to the community, I enjoyed the interaction and I feel I have added value for other members. And it is now part of my daily commitment to my business which includes giving back to the WA community, who have given me so much already.

Not saying I wouldn’t have done those things with out ranking in mind, but to be honest I would have put in less effort to search out training links to help others and done less research to provide quality answers to questions.

These things take time, and that’s time I could be spending working on my site. I don’t think I would be the only one with this mindset, so yes the ranking system works to do exactly what it’s designed to do, get people paying it forward and keeping the WA community ticking over.

This was great, Mike. I never really thought of myself as a competitive adult. Sure, I competed in sports until sidelined with an injury in my mid 30's. But later on, as an adult? Nothing comes to mind. Oh, whoa, I take that back. I'm passively competitive with my jewelry business.

So, then I come to WA. Healthy competition is good, but, I am mostly competing with time! There's never enough time to do all I want. I feel a blog coming on :)

Keep going, Mike, and keep writing. You have a lot of feeling and wisdom to share.

Mike: al little competition never hurt anyone. WA’s ranking system is a small way of letting you know where you stand in the “competition”.

Ranking allows you merely to see where you are numerically if competition is not your thing. It may even be a silent gauge of your learning and participation within WA

Regardless of how we individually perceive ranking I feel we should keep it and not fiddle with it too much because it works well from various viewpoints.

Mike,
I like your blog and see competition, assessment and ranking system as a perfect method to help us measure ourselves how we are doing is our business measure of fitness. The business measurement will tell us areas to get better to reduce our chances of failure manage to achieve the businessman ultimate goal: to make money.
Agree and like your blog.
Thanks for reminding us.
Cheers,

I think you greatly oversimplified something that has much deeper business implications than you addess. It is wonderful to support and help each other and "pay it forward". It makes WA the unique place that it is. But if you are focused on your rank, your eyes are not on the prize. Just my opinion.

That is the appropriate attitude to take Steven!

I was thinking of this earlier, Mike. Since I am really new here, I tend to focus more on the training and improving my site.... so most of the time my rank slides down. I wondered what I did wrong in the beginning but I just brushed it off. I know Kyle and Carson only want us to interact with each other as much as we can. I'll probably have more time for that later.

Wonderful post, Mike.

I think the philosophy of helping one another succeed, that Kyle and Carson have built this program on, is exemplary.

Yes, we all enjoy seeing our rank number improve and we know what it takes to make that happen.

In the end, we are in control of our rank within WA. Kyle and Carson have outlined the methods, we have the choice of engaging in the process or not.

If we contribute and support one another, we are rewarded with a better rank within the system. I think it is a great incentive to practice the very philosophy upon which WA has been developed.

Is it competitive? I guess so. I see it more as a method of keeping us committed to being a contributing member. I am competing with myself.

Thank you for another great thought provoking post!

Susan

Thank you Susan! :))

I love healthy competition! And I'm already ranked up to the tiny number of 134,382 in just one day! LOL We all have what it takes, once we unleash it. I've learned along the way in life that we just have to get our minds right, and get out of our own way. I don't worry with how everyone else is doing better than I am or worse, for that matter. I worry about ME and make sure I'm doing all I can to be the best that I can. Best wishes to all for much success!

Kelly

I totally agree with you Mike. If I am busy with with other things and my ranking slides I'm OK with that.
If you don't want to compete in any way for rankings I feel that is perfectly OK too.
For some it may be what's needed to keep focussed and hungry for where they want to be.
Each to their own, everyone has there own path and will create their own journey.

Success to everyone I say no matter where you rank.
