The disaster in American retail has reached cataclysmic proportions! Department stores like Macy's, Sears and J.C. Penney, and retailers including BCBG, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Bebe have all been forced to close up dozens of stores. Walking through a mall in 2017 is like walking through a graveyard.

Not far from where I live are the ancient tombstone stores of Montgomery Ward and others that have closed for years. rusted carts, cracked parking tarmac, cans and bottles are present. Newly occupied Faith Ministry and evangelist groups tenant the old shells like an attempt to resurrect the departed.

Where new clothes and restaurants once plied their trade, hand me downs, and rooms for revival meetings set the stage. It would take a spiritual medium to communicate and affiliate commercial ventures with these old relics.

Companies are doing it to themselves. My son and I went to Target the other day to buy a pair of shoes he saw on their website. Unfortunately, the local Target store does not carry the brand in the store. In fact, the in-store selection of men's shoes is pitiful.

The bottom line is that department stores are not giving shoppers any reason to walk in and shop. Problem is that they cannot compete against the Amazon business model.

Too much corruptions

A very dark and scathing post. But sharp and on point as a razor's edge.

Thank you. It's continuing as we post!

It's what happens when corruption creeps in.

Yeah, Mike, it seems like the malls are not faring well here, either. Only the really upscale ones are holding their own, and they are further away.

It breaks my heart but this is so true. Thank you, Michael, for yet another truly awesome post.

However, this is changing. MAGA.

so sad...but true...

My Dad worked for Sears and he was able to provide us with an grateful life due to profit sharing which they no longer offer. Sad to see it go. Debbie

Especially sad to see Sears go Debbi, JC penny as well. Central to my life. There was another one as well which you may not remember...Golden Rule. Like Penny's a great place for school clothes and supplies!

It's really quite sad, but fortunately, where I am, malls are still doing good business. They are visibly less busy than several years ago, but far from abandoned.

The slow death of traditional retail is obviously quite good for us, but I know that ht malls near me are refuges for seniors without air-conditioning in hot summer months and are also used by groups of (predominantly female) power walkers. There will undoubtedly be quite the adverse effect upon them should malls in this area start shutting down.

A good point Craig. Unfortunately they aren't used for emergency heating and cooling after they are shut down. That bankrupts failing governments further!

It's a tragedy...especially when you see new growth springing up everywhere. So many of our cities have these shells of once was, along with the litter and debris from transients seeking shelter...the city I live in is no exception along with the landmark Montgomery Ward store.

Making them into Apostolic revival centers is a better alternative than that. Thanks for your response Sue!
