A beautiful planet in Spring

In 1970, I was on leave from active duty in the military. I stayed at the YMCA. One of the inexpensive sanctuaries for those in the military to sojourn.

This was in Philadelphia. There is a plaza just to the west of city hall. I could look out my window and feel the vibrations and energy of a celebration going on.there The time was notorious for recovering from the "enlightened counterculture" and all the chemical stimulants that were part of it.

The event was the first Earth Day season of celebration I witnessed. This was the first year and it exploded globally/.

As the days progressed there was a return to traditional faith as the false icons of chemicals and smoke failed the believers that put their trust in such things. Jesus Christ Superstar was representative of this cosmic mood!

It is unfortunate that we cant spend more than a few short years on this planet. I have enjoyed hiking in many areas. The Appalachian Trail in the east US, parts of the Rocky mountain trail in Colorado and sections of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington, Oregon and California.

I've even had the opportunity to hike in the central mountains in Honshu, the main island of Japan. You can never see enough or hike far enough. For the opportunittic members here I'm sure there is a lot to promote in 2 years for the 50th anniversary!

Go out, weather permitting, and plant something on this fine spring day. Run your fingers through the soil. It has been proven to be a "roots therapy" that is good for your health. There is a wonderful season ahead. Lets get out and celebrate Earth Day!

Thanks for sharing, Mike.

Great post! Makes me realize I haven’t seen enough of this beautiful world. Anyways, it’s not warm enough to plant yet here, but I do look forward to getting outdoors soon. Also, I do recycle as much as possible.
Thanks,
Marcus

Mike,
Your post brought back fond memories of time spent, in Japan.
Thank, you, for the "hike" down Memory Lane.

I will continue to stop buying plastic bags, that will be my awareness on this Earth presently and I have no garden to plant anything at the moment.

DID YOU KNOW: The plastic problem is even worse than we thought:

One of the bleakest stories of the year so far was the report of a six-ton sperm whale washing up on the shores of southern Spain with 64 pounds of plastic in its stomach, a grotesque sign of the alarming rate at which we’re dumping plastics into the ocean.

Sad but true!

Thanks Mike, nice post and great awareness for us all!

Oh, horrible! Poor whale, poor fish, poor life in the sea!
How will this end, if it's not getting something radically done about it?

Very good decision, Wayne, to stop using plastic bags. I do also avoid plastic as much as I can.
:-)

If we all do something small, plant something like Mike suggests!

It’s the mess we leave for the kids I worry about.

We should take control of our own lives and be responsible.

Thanks Pernilla

I have just been outside in the garden, enjoying the beauty of spring. The green grass, the first flowers and the blossom of the apple trees.

I'll go outside now again, sit down and enjoy the wonder of Earth.

Thanks Mike and have a wonderful Sunday rejoicing Earth Day.
:-)

I have 3 yards of mulch waiting for my attention in this lovely day!! :) And several Day Lillies to plant. :) I LOVE gardening.. it’s so therapeutic!

Kristy,
If I could put down this device... I, too, have
Some gardening, to-do's!
Springtime?? My time!!

Does planting in my greenhouse count? There are blooming plants everywhere. I love Earth day. We planted 20 shrubs along our fence line a few days ago. They will look nice when they are grown.

I can remember celebrating Earth Day back in School we planted a tree. A memory I had long forgotten. thank you for pointing it out.

earth day is also my daughter's birthday and she's an inorganic chemist who's working on biofuels - some poetic justice in that me thinks

Here in Japan the cherry blossom season is over. Actually, the "double blossom" cherry trees (that bloom about a week after the famous Somei Yoshino cherry trees) were washed out in heavy rain last week.

The last few days have been lovely though, balmy sprint days, and the various types of dogwood tree and azalias are in bloom.

There are lots of azalia hedges in blossom here in Hiroshima at this time of year.

I should also mention the wisteria, which is coming into its own as Golden Week approaches.

Soon the heat and humidity of summer will kick in, so I'm enjoying spring while I can!

I had some time in Yokohama...
Loved the beautiful, blue Hydrangeas!!

The flora, climate and topography in the Tokyo-Kyoto corridor is similar to the mid Atlantic US east coast! A reason for the thriving Cherry Blossom festival in Wash DC

Another, great Vista! I don't believe, I've been there,
Since 1964!
