Are you a Success Seeker or a Failure Avoider?
So I was watching a TED talk this morning, very early this morning, by Scott Geller (a professor at Virginia Tech who studies Self-Motivation). Here is the link if you want to watch it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sxpKhIbr0E&feature=youtu.be). I was watching it because I was feeling a little unmotivated – OK a lot unmotivated – yesterday. I know that is a common problem here – it is so hard to stay Self –motivated. Scott Geller studies success and self motivation. I am in the process of shifting my career from employee to online entrepreneur, like many of you. To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to be very self-motivated.
Geller’s philosophy is that we need to move from being Failure Avoiders to Success Seekers. To find out if you are a Failure Avoider or a Success Seeker you need to ask yourself three
- Can you do it?
- Will it work?
- Is it worth it?
If you can answer yes to these three questions, then you have the basis of self-motivation and success will be yours. So lets look at the questions:
- Can you do it? With WA we know that the answer to this is a yes – you follow the steps and ask for help when you need it. We Can Do It!
- Will it work? Well we know that is yes also, many people here at WA succeeded and made the WA approach work so It Will Work.
- Is it worth it? That is of course a personal question because it is doing what we do is work and takes lots of time and effort. For me the answer is a resounding yes. It is definitely worth it to help people, be independent and have financial freedom! It Is Worth It!
OK so now we know that here at WA we are Success Seekers! Fantastic! Now lets look at Self-Motivation.Geller focuses on four things you need for Self-Motivation – his four Cs:
- Competence – If you answered yes to the above questions then you feel more competent and more motivated
- Choice - When you have a choice – you are self-motivated.
- Communication – positive words are powerful and so are negative words. Use positive words and positive self-talk if you want to STAY self motivated.
- Community – Social support is very important and powerful. People who have a community are more self-motivated!
Geller found that to find self motivation you need to feel competent and have choice. With the training available here at WA we are becoming more and more competent. It is totally within our choice to do the training or not. We are in control!
To keep yourself more motivated you need have positive communication and community support.
The words we use with ourselves and others are so powerful. We need to make sure we use positive self-talk with ourselves. Negative self-talk demotivates us in the long run. This is completely in our control and only in our control.
The community we have around us is so important to staying self-motivated. We need to have a positive supporting community – and that is what we have here at WA. We are very lucky and very smart to be part of this community! If we want to we can surround ourselves with other Success Seekers who are aiming for similar goals and reaching out for success. That is incredibly powerful! We need to make sure that individually we keep this community positive and growing!
I hope that you find this summary helpful and can use it to help your self-motivation!

i love this talk on motivation especially the part where he says that at ten years old he reminded his teacher of who he began to play the drums, excellent! you never stop learning and some who just starts out can remind us again even if we are way ahead in the journey, love it ! :)
Hi mjpd, I used to be so negative and then I came across this wonderful WA community and now with support such as this blog, my life is changing by the day. I feel so much more positive and I'm now so sure I will succeed that I've just gone yearly. Best decision I ever made. Thanks for this motivating article. Ches
Congratulations on going yearly! I am glad you are becoming more and more positive. It is important to surround yourself with positive people and WA is just that - a group of positive people wanting to help you!
I think we all are a bit of each - Perhaps the thing is to try and stay in the Success Seeker mode?
See, If I avoid failure, I can safely and confidently confess, I was not guilty of joining the club of Misery.
