Thoughts on Relevancy

We are taught here to pay attention to relevancy in our blogs. This is something really new to me and I can honesty say that this information has helped me to be a better writer. I already was a writer when I started here, but writing is something you never stop learning. I had no idea when I first started how this would affect my future as a writer. Writing in a concise manner without verbosity or pretensions is the ultimate aim of every writer (or should be). Over just a few months I went from agonizing over a couple of novels I was trying to write (yes, at the same time!), to a kind of "shrinking" of my ideas into shorter forms. My creative brain - if I can be excused for the term - was besieged with ideas for stories like this which I am now posting on my site. I have no idea how this will play out on Google, because finding keywords for fiction isn't quite as easy; I don't even know if it'll work, I don't know if anyone else has ever done it before, or whether it'll bring in visitors. I'm writing blogs as well, of course.

The main point I am trying to make here is about relevancy in the media. We're taught here that everything we write has to be relevant. I just wish that my cable company would understand that concept. When I'm watching a documentary about the Gulf War, let's say, do I really want to be subjected to obnoxious adds about hair shampoo or the latest cure for Hemorrhoids? It's true that ads on the Internet are not necessarily relevant, but as a user with direct engagement with the computer we have control over what we see or don't see, etc, to a greater extent. In any case, it's something we need to guard against wherever we find it: control.

I'm not sure if I'm making such a huge point here, but it's something I've been thinking about, because our interaction with media is so vital these days. There is so much that is good out there, so why spoil it? Do we need big corporate cable companies today? No, we don't. The old technology is still around despite all the other interfaces we have today with the myriad or so websites and choices, etc. Why do we still put up with the cable companies? Usually because cable companies have bamboozled the uninitiated into thinking that this is their connection to the world and it's so much easier than having to fiddle around with a computer. Most of this propaganda is targeted at retired people and others who have never bothered to find out about the world of the Internet, for a host of reasons. Underneath it all is the fear of something new, and there are a surprising number of people who still have not really engaged with the Internet and don't truly understand its significance.

Information and the ability to decode it is a new skill that needs to be honed by everyone, no matter what age, because it's up to us, the public to set the standards, not the other way round. Like they say, "Caveat emptor," or buyer beware.

Thank you.

Well, thanks very much. I appreciate your comment. Okay, I'll follow you.

Thanks for sharing. And by the way we have what is known as air TV because I refuse to deal with the TV internet people who are ripping people off these days in my opinion. I do have internet since I have to but not TV or landline phone.

Tried and True

Thanks, Elaine. Hm, yes it's a problem all right. That's why I think it's real important to stay ahead of the curve, if possible, to know enough about technology that we are not so easily fooled. I've learned a heck of a lot here, just in the few months since I started. It's a great tool we have here, and it would be crazy not to take advantage of it.

Great Read! Thank you. I enjoy your articles.

Thank you.
