I just wanted to talk about focus, because in our society we're totally bombarded by all kinds of noise from many different directions, whether it's TV, the Internet, video games, cell phones, or road rage. Or whatever. I learned (and I'm still learning) about focus when I started to meditate. The biggest factor in meditation is the influence it has on your busy brain. Our brains are full of neurons that are firing all the time, and for the most part the information that's being passed around inside your head is A LOT OF NOISE. Most of our thinking is what is called "rumination." You know, you're sitting in front of the TV watching a show and an argument you lost with a friend the other day just happens to pop into your head. You engage in the argument again, this time you win. Small satisfaction, and it doesn't end there, because you generally go on ruminating, trying to figure out how you can square this uncomfortable feeling you have now about the person with your own conviction that you just know you are right. Usually what happens is the ruminating continues on and other stuff gets loaded on top until you are in a really bad mood. I kind of visualize it as a freight train, with additional boxcars beings added all the time, until the locomotive can't pull it anymore.

I'm not saying everyone goes through this, but I did. The key to thinking clearly is a peaceful mind. In fact, a good way to start into anything, any project or activity, is to have no expectations. Expectations tend to be unrealistic, and if you cling to that, you'll be disappointed. I guess I'm saying that an open mind is the best way to approach things.
