Don't Count The Days, Make The Days

The great Muhammad Ali was once quoted as saying, "Don't Count The Days, Make The Days Count".

It means don't just count the days day-by-day, but cherish each day; chase time in stride, and don't let time chase you! Let's break it down it further:

  • “Don't count the days” means not to count days, when you set a goal you should not measure your preparation with the number of days.
  • “Make the day count” means make the day/time spent on something count meaningfully, as you work toward your goals -- you should be so engrossed in the pursuit of your goal that you don't even realize how many days are passing.

How Does That Relate To Us At WA?

If you make a goal with the plan to complete a lesson/ training, write a blog, write a great keyword article for your website, and oh, finish any projects around the house or at work within 10 days, you're only creating undo pressure on yourself, and stress.

As Ali suggests, you should not count the days; you should instead work hard at what you want to accomplish instead of wasting time calculating the number of days left to complete a task -- just to fill out a day planner or place check marks in your calendar.

We all have worries in our lives about what "may" or "may not" ever happen.

There seems to be an infinite number of things we need to spend time worrying about. At the end of the day, however, does worrying about things do us any good?

The answer is a resounding NO! Stop worrying about the "ifs" and "if not" in our lives.

I can go on and on about all the things I can find to worry about every day, and I am sure you can too - things we all know we are stressed about. Stressing and worrying about them does not do much good other than just stressing us out and eating away at the time making us less productive in the end, and that is not a good use of time nor helping us achieve our plan!

Mohammad Ali’s quote "Don’t count the days…make the day count” is a good reminder to us all to not count days until this or that happens, or until this or that is done. Instead, we need to start focusing on making each day count as it happens, and be as productive as we can.

Again, each of us has worries in our lives, things that we are afraid of – but worrying about what "may" or "may not" happen is just a major time waster.

It can demotivate us, it can lead to procrastination, frustration (as we regret not getting things done that we should have, or wanted to accomplish), and missing opportunities, which unfortunately can lead to lost revenue!

For example, I worry that my little girl is growing up and going to leave home in a year…but I can choose to spend every day worrying about the fact that I only have one more year of her here at home with us, or I can instead choose to spend every day making our time together count.

We have to remember that in life all we can do is our best. Lay it all on the line, using our time as productively as possible. Once we have done that there is absolutely nothing that worrying about will do for us.

As long as we have done our best, we can then hold our heads high, and hope for great things to come as a result (such as traffic to our sites).

Don’t waste another minute of your life wallowing in worries or sadness for things that you cannot change. Instead, focus on the positive. Focus on what you can control and let go of the things that you cannot control.

Trust God, or trust the universe…trust whatever higher power you believe in. Life may not go the exact way you think it should, but trust that things are happening for your own best good so long as you are doing your very best in all you do.

...so please Don't Count The Days, Make The Days Count, thoughts?

Great message.
Quite often , for me anyway, it’s just being there. It’s not trying to make every day 120% it’s about just being there.
Something I’ve missed a bit. But it’s the being there talking turkey and doing nothing not trying to solve the mysteries of history.
The little things are important…
Thanks
Stephen

Thank you for your feedback and sharing Stephen!

For me it’s trying to stop the Paralysis by Analysis syndrome…and focusing more on getting stuff done.

Good advice Mike. Work on the things over which we have control.

Totally on point, Mike.
Worry less and make every moment counts.
Thank you.

Yes! For me, I too often become paralyzed by analysis and put too much time into planning something than ACTUALLY doing it…and I think many also fall into the same trap!

Hi Jeff

These are very wise words and are true; we should cherish our days in the land of the living.

We need to make the best of our time and work hard to get to where we want to be.

Well said, Elke! Thank you for your great feedback.

Very true words, Mike! I even recognized the "Serenity Prayer" in your post! We should always pursue our goals, come what may!

Jeff

Well spotted Jeff!

I know there a couple of different versions, but as you probably know Mohammed Ali was a VERY religious man, and so it crept into many of his great quotes.

As you noted my friend, here is the Serenity Prayer as I know it:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

Thank you, Jeff!

-Mike

That's the Serenity prayer that I know, Mike!
