The meaning of words are important - The someday list

To some who have read any of my blog posts, I may seem like an over excited cheerleader on meth ! I am somewhat optimistic these days, but in reality I am kind of optimistic guy by nature ! To a fault? Maybe ! And let me reassure you I have not been smoking anything. It is simply my personal thoughts I've decided to share in hopes that maybe it will lift someone's day. Why? Because I'm an optimistic guy !

But that optimism isn't blind optimism in the least! The word optimism in its self conjures thoughts of something better! And who doesn't want that ? You see after all optimism is that force that can be so small that you smile when you think about tomorrow. You can be optimistic about waking up tomorrow because evidence says you have a pretty good chance of it! After all you woke up this morning and nothing happened to decrease your health before bed, so chances are pretty good that you will wake up and repeat the chance of a new day tomorrow!

So you aren't optimistic?

One deal breaker that trumps optimism is death. Death is inevitable for everyone, but we don't wake up in the morning consumed with an outlook and dread of death! It is much easier and profitable to concentrate on and go to bed optimistic, and hope that we wake up to a new day, greeted by the sunshine through the bedroom window!

Hope and Dreams are two more important words ! In fact maybe two of the most important! Because your hopes and dreams are the catalyst for that day you woke up to ! You have been blessed with another day to pursue those hopes and dreams ! But how many of us do?

The real deal breaker

You mean to tell me that death isn''t what you consider the real deal breaker, you ask? No I don't. Death will come! There is no avoiding it. But between now and then Optimism is the fuel that keeps that sunshine through the bedroom window bright! No death isn't the deal breaker. The real deal breaker is the word. Someday!

Most people wake in the morning and go to work at a job they absolutely hate because they have to, or at least feel they have to. And I don't think anyone will argue that having to get up early in the morning and going to a job you hate isn't living. It's surviving! So to try to get back in that optimistic mode which I think is a natural state, human beings develop their "someday list".

  • Someday I'm gonna get out of that place and find a job that pays better and I like.
  • Someday I'm gonna travel and see the country and all the things I've always wanted to see.
  • Someday I'm gonna work for myself, so I don't have to be the rat in the rear of the rat race line. (The view never changes there.)
  • Someday I'm gonna get my family that house we've always wanted .
  • Someday I'm gonna be happy.

I've thought a lot about that word someday for several months now. It;'s been sewn into my mind and hanging over my shoulder ever since I read the book 4 hour work week, by Timothy Ferris. I don't know that Mr. Ferris meant that single word to be the one thing I best remember about his well crafted book. But it is.

Why is one word so powerful?

I've always thought that words are very powerful, even since I was a child. I've always thought that someones name (their personal word) carried great meaning no matter what it is , so I have always had a real problem with mispronouncing someone's name or forgetting it.

That is likely the reason I have remembered this word from 1 of many, many books I've read? Nope! The reason I remember the word Someday is because of the other words that made the surrounding sentence.

"The word someday is the curse that will carry your hopes and dreams to the grave with you ".

I don't care who you are! That is a powerful statement, and one that will make you think!

I have a someday list so long, it would likely rival the number of chapters in Mr. Ferris' book ! I'm not really happy to be 48 years old and still building my someday list! How long is your someday list? Has that list stopped you from trying new things because you are scared you will fail? Mine has.

My optimistic new word !

My optimistic new word is Today !! Today I will do things different! Today , I start chasing down each item in my someday list and marking it off. Will I fail? Maybe ! But who cares! I will learn from it and guess what ?

Tomorrow I will wake up and look out my bedroom window at the beautiful sunshine and the first words out of my mouth will be, It's gonna be fun seeing how far I get TODAY !

Thanks for reading !

Great post!

I am abit behind in emails so for that I do apologize, but I wanted to let you know that I have been uplifted by your post today and for that I thank you!

Hello Mike,
I see I am a little late. I can see how we may have a list for someday, but I don't let that stand in my way. Today is a good word.
Marylou

Thanks for the kind words everyone ! I debated on sharing it, but I thought someone might need it.
We can't be paralyzed by the poisonous "Someday list" !
Today is the first day if the rest of our lives so act ! Make it happen ! I've heard several people complaining about things not going right and hitting roadblocks, the next thing you know they have quit.
Or people who talk about an action plan like starting an E mail list and know it's a great revenue and communication Avenue to their audience and 3 or 4 months later they still haven't taken another step .
Have fun and fo after it !!

Mike

Awe ready, Mike!

Great post and very optimistic. Thanks for sharing

Great post my friend. Thanks for sharing with us all.

Hello, Mike, and thank you immensely for your take on that word, "SOMEDAY." Like most people, I used to use that word a lot! But, deep down, I too, am an optimist, so I rarely say it anymore.

Your post reiterates that point to me and gives me the perfect word to substitute in its place--TODAY!

Continued success...starting TODAY!

Joshua

Thanks for sharing.... Today is excellent. I avoid saying "someday" or "one day" because usually it never comes.
