Another Question for "Techies" or for those with Fast Mobile Loading Speeds

Hi Everyone.

IMAGES.

I have been playing with some of my early web pages that had images that were far too large.

Yesterday I got some great advice from WA members on plug ins for image compression etc which I am going to explore.

I have another question. I use a lot of images as they are an essential part of what I do. Some are my own and some from the companies that I am an Affiliate for.

QUESTION - What is the optimum size for an image in terms of KB?

I dont mean pixel dimensions but rather memory in KB?

Any ideas and input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Mike

Quick update.

I did a post today on my website.

> 12 Images all pre shrunk and sized properly.
> No social media plug in.
> I am now on the new server and using kraken.

I have tested the mobile speed and it is at 84 which may not be prefect but is WAY better than I got before. I am hoping it may increase in speed tomorrow as the results seem to improve with time.

Thanks for all your help.

Mike

id leave it at that Mike - no point going for perfection as the last 10% will take 90% of the time - remember that from engineering....
so i would carry on creating posts and just keep an eye on the speed every now and then.
glad you are there
phil

Thank you Phil.

Yes - I am going to take your advice as it is the same advice given by a few others who, like you, I really respect here on WA.

Your input has helped me many times over the last 18 months and I really appreciate your help.

Regards - Mike

Thanks everyone.
I did a test today.
I had one of my early posts which had large images on.
Mobile speed was 53. Desk top was 91
I removed all the images and replaced them with resized versions, which it turns out are still a bit large.
Speed went up to 60 & 95 - So more resizing and reducing is needed.

Oddly I checked another post which uses images from a company who I promote.
The images are much smaller in terms of KB size yet the mobile speed for that post was only 34!

Its all a bit odd and I have a lot to learn!

Mike

bit of advice is to try the speed test on each page at least twice - you will probably get two speeds - the first will not be cached and the second maybe cached - depending on the program....
if you are using web page test or gtmetrix both of these take it into account.
it might be worth trying varvydot com - as this will graphically show you what your page is doing and give helpful hints on what to do...
have fun - but don't obsess - people will wait for the content if they know it is good and helpful....

As always - Thank You Phil.

Greatly Appreciated.

Mike

image size and file size does go together - so using jpgs
i am typically looking at 500px ( x dim) and file size 30kb - 48kb max
and using an image compression plugin - kraken - as well
using astra theme and delaying js loading i am now sort of in hte 80's loading time
with another theme ( premium ) i found one sote is definitely in the 100 for both mobile and pc....
so it is not just images it is theme, plugins, images and any other bits that are loaded - including ads.
have fun getting the speed up
phil

Hi Phil.
Thank you for the detailed answer.

Greatly appreciated.
Mike

The smaller is size that you can make an image the better.
I tend to use photographs that I have taken a lot so you can understand that they are in Meg.
As I'm a semi-professional photographer I looked into which type of programs that are best to use to resize.
My all time favourite is PIXresizer, (https://pixresizer.en.softonic.com/)
It's very basic but does exactly what you need.
I have used for over 20 years now.

Hi Neil - What size do you take yours down to?

Thank you for the link, really appreciated.

Mike

As the size is measured in pixels I generally set mine for a web page at 400 pixels x 300 pixels.
That is a rectangle.
You can let the program decide but sometimes that isn't small enough so you have to play with sizes until you find one you like.

Hi Neil.

I have been going for 350 wide Pixels which fit well.

Thanks again.
Mike

Yes, absolutely, it's whatever size that suits you.
I had to look at some of my images to see the sizes I use as I couldn't remember....lol

That is exactly the question I was thinking about last night. So glad you asked. I'm going to watch this space.

Lily 😊🎶
