I read somewhere that it's better to turn off the pings and trackbacks. I can't remember who, but someone had a lot of problems with that feature. Until I've studied the topic more I prefer to remain cautious about trackbacks and pings.
Now I am confused. Kyle in his training says backlinks are not needed anymore and Google has got wise to them.
Can you tell me if I have misread or understood what Kyle says?

Kyle is right. I would not pay for backlinks, too expensive. These are free and have other useful free tools as well.
I just added a test website that I have for purposes like this and checked each of the 100 backlinks that were generated.
Based on what I saw, I would be very very careful using this tool.
But I will leave it to everyone to decide for themselves if backlinks like this are of value.

But... I have the same reservations you do. I tested it out and saw the same thing.
Quality backlinks are earned, not automatically generated. The results I saw were all directory/hub style listings. Would you consider this to be a quality reference to your work?
Also - for those who might not have heard of such things before (for those who have, begging your pardon) - one of the nasty blackhat seo tactics used to take down an online business presence is to create a flood shoddy backlinks pointing back to that business.
The intent is to lower the authority of a site in good standing until it's penalised by search engines.
Can you imagine accidentally doing that to your own site, by using auto backlink generators?

I would not risk penalties for using the tool. You have no control over where your backlinks end up, and they can easily end up on sites flagged for blackhat link building or be flagged for a penalty just by being added to the sites that came up in the generator.
Relevance is the key, and there is no relevance in having a hidden backlink on a dodgy Rhianna fan page or an auto-generated directory site.
