This is my hat, well it's actually a photo of a variation, mine was a sand color. If the saying "All hat no cattle" springs to mind, your right I don't own any cattle. No horses either. Gave 'em up years back.

Hats are good, shade from the sun if gardening, mowing the lawn, fishing, even working! .Going outside, the hat goes with you.

So when I go to the Caribbean I take my Akubra.

One evening, Magalias had organized a party at her place near Barranquilla, where a few of us would have a bit of catch up. Some I hadn't seen in about 3 years.

Things started off quietly enough, it was late afternoon and Alberto and Angus arrived shortly after I did, the next door neighbor came across and together we went up to the corner store and bought some cartons of beer, some soft drinks and snacks.

Jose Luis arrived, with Kelly, his tall, statuesque wife. He is so straight this guy, always immaculately dressed and groomed, but a pleasure to have around. He loves soccer, not sure I needed to say that. He is Colombian.
Mariana showed up out of nowhere, and William showed up with a bottle of something.

Magalis and Sandra, cooked and served food, and Patrica whose hand had been injured in a work accident, was sharing x-rays.

I know some people prefer to look at other things while having dinner. Like how sexy your mates wife looks, or paintings on walls.

We had x-rays of a thumb showing a pin the doctors had inserted into it.

Meals finished and dishes done, the neighbor went home and cranked up the stereo, (not too loudly). we settled into drinking beer, asking questions of each other and telling assorted jokes and stories..

The moon was well and truly lighting up the patio when Mariana came over with more beer and handed me a can.

She sat down and asked what I like. Not able to come up with a sensible answer, I said, " KFC, McDonalds..", She joined in, " El Corral, Burger King, I have worked at all of them."

She told me she was just a girl from Bucaramanga, who has flipped burgers at all of those places, "sometimes", she said, "we are a little greedy, this is why we are all a little chubby, but we are full of love".

She likes Salsa and beer, and so the night went on. One of the last things I remember was seeing Magalis dressed to kill, about to head out to some Salsa dancing nightclub.

I woke up next morning, Not much of a hangover, and my day was not too bad. The next day Sandra and I went down to catch the bus to Cartagena. I felt half dressed. No hat!. And it was hot.

Sandra showed me a text fom Alberto, " Tell Michael I like his sombero"

" Maybe we can go get it" I said.

" No, Alberto has gone back to work at the mine, he won't be back for a month' she said.

Ohh well, that's gone I thought.

Back in the day, in Australia, and probably this still goes on in some places, if you messed with a mans hat, you - are - about - to - get - into- a - fight !.

I think I have matured, to old, to slow. Anyway it's a hat !. So back in Australia and no hat.

Thinking, should I go and fork out $150 for another, I thought better of it, and decided to put it on the to do later list.

Yesterday I saw a photo on facebook, from Alberto.

My new hat. All hand made and personalized.

Michael.
