Do you need passion

In so many blog posts offering help in finding niches, the one line that keeps appearing is " Go with what your passionate about".

To be honest I am not that passionate about anything.

I have, nearly all my working life worked as a builder, putting blots on the landscape in one form or another. Am I passionate about it. Nope. I have worked with plenty of interesting characters and some awful clients,

if I were to be asked "would I do again?", my answer would probably be "No".

I have built kayaks, not because I am passionate about them, but a timber boat will always look better than extruded plastic ( no matter what color it is), and perform better too. (maybe I am a snob). But it is my choice.

I have kept bees. Am I passionate about bees?. Not really. I know they are important in an ecological sense, but I am not passionate about them.

I was only an accidental beek anyway. I have a farmer friend who visited me, and over a few beers I agreed to make him some bee hives. Next thing I have one bee hive, then before I knew it, a dozen of them and more hives needed.

Accidental knowledge. call it what you will, but because you do something doesn't make it a passion.

I would say it is better to go with something you are competent at. Learn something, get good at it, then become very good at it.

Forget passion, that dog doesn't bark. Master a skill, become competent.

Michael.

I hear you..."Jack of all traids an master of none "....but I am sure you are passionate about something in life..even if you have to dig for it. Don't waste time *****

Hi Tillie3,
Thank you for your comment on this topic.
Michael.

That's actually sad that you aren't involved in anything you are passionate about. I hope you find passion in your life - it's a wonderful thing to experience.

I've had sites on subjects I didn't care about, like insurance, and sites I really enjoyed, like sports and travel. It was much more interesting to write about the subjects I enjoyed, especially over time. In my position with http://Awin.com, I see literally thousands of sites each year and I can always spot those with true passion vs. those that have none. Their writing screams the interest level in either direction. Competency and passion are not diametrically opposed.

The sites you create should be on a topic you find of interest, because you will be spending a lot of time with them over the next weeks, months and years. So why not pick something you enjoy?

Take the time to find something you enjoy. Your writing will always reflect it.

Hi Jeanine,
Thank you for your thoughts on my provocative topic.
Michael.

I think there is a difference between "being interested in" and being "passionate about". To me, to be passionate about something then it goes really deep, that is, whatever you are interested in is really a part of your lifestyle and it means a lot to you. Like the girl who spends all her time riding horses and spending time with them or a guy who spends his time in the garage working with on his cars or bikes.

Simply being interested in something is much more casual and of less importance. I for example am interested in boxing (my stepson is a boxer) but it does not mean that much to me and I could certainly live without it.

Cheers,

Jojo

Passion at that depth will always show through, so that girl should have a site about horses and that guy should have a site about cars or bikes.

Sadly a lot of the folks on WA decide to make sites about making money online, specifically WA, when they've never been successful themselves doing so. Their sites read like a book report as a result, not offering anything special that I couldn't find countless other places. I always suggest that WA members start with a blog about something they are truly passionate about, so that passion will carry them through the learning process.

Once that blog is successful, then it's time to create a blog about MMO and WA because you can speak from experience. You are also then sufficiently experienced to create a site about something you are not as passionate about.

That's why I say "always start with passion."

Michael--I can totally relate! I'm a locksmith, but I'm sure not passionate about it after almost thirty years, but it still to an extent pays the bills! I understand what you're saying though. I'm passionate about writing just have to discover what I'm passionate about in terms of a niche to use my passion for writing for! Whew--that was a mouthful!

Very thought provoking post, my friend!

I agree 100% with this Michael. Whilst I'm interested in a number of things, I certainly wouldn't say that I'm passionate. It's just how it is for me.
I might become 'passionate' about something one day, but I don't think it can be forced.
Thanks for raising these points.

Jake

That's it Jake, it is something that evolves.
Michael.
