9-5 job vs Building Business

Actually I just would like to share a little thought that keep crossing my mind...

For those of us working 9-5 jobs, don’t you feel like you are wasting your time in that job?

Wasting time for somebody who you probably never met/meet (like CEO, or people behind financial corporation which owns other corporation where you are working)?

Lately I do feel like that and that feeling is becoming stronger and creates kind of pressure inside me.

But for time being, I am still "forced" to work the 9-5, since I do not have secondary income. Not Yet.

Don’t get me wrong - I don’t want to complain.

I just want to ask myself – what is good about that?

One of the answer to the question can be:

1) That growing pressure inside me I can use and release as form of energy in the evening – I can put that into the work which makes sense to me. In this specific case - my site(s).

Of course, it is not always easy, but eventually I will become better at this transition.

Another angle to look at the situation:

2) It is like a Game. So far I am losing the game with following score :

Me 0 points : CC (corporate company)1500 points

(lets say 1500 is my salary per month)

Once I am able to make at least the same amount as I am getting in my 9-5 job, I can call the game even and, I can quit 9-5 and dedicate all my time to something useful.

So I do believe that this right mindset is very important. Thing is, I still have many weak points though.

But once we are able to determine our weak points, we are already half-way thru to our goal.

Let me know, how you deal with your 9-5 job and building your business online at the same time.

Finding balance is hard. I am disabled and find a 9 to 5 job impossible. Either way WA for me is very time consuming.

Michael,

It must be difficult, at least from my point of view.

Also one thing what I take as granted is my health. I must be more grateful for that as well.

Thank you for the comment
All the best
Mike

I held a 9-5 job for years, until illness came into my life. I battled Cancer, and won, but it has forever changed me, and I can no longer hold a traditional job.

I've found that there are two types of people in the word, those like us that detest the idea of making someone else rich, and want so badly to work for themselves to enjoy the freedom that comes along with it, yet we stay in our "job" because there are bills to be paid. We are the ones with the Entreprenurial mindset.

The others, are more than happy to go, do their job, and then go home. They have no interest in self employment, because they are happy with getting that paycheck at the end of the week, and doing whatever they want with that money. There is nothing wrong with this group, they just lack the Entreprenuial mindset that drives the rest of us to to what we do.

While I worked, I reached the point where no matter what job I held, I hated getting up each morning, driving to work, and spending 8 hours in a windowless cubicle, dealing with all the stress that came along with the "job". My husband still works, and I see all that he goes through, all the crap, the stress. The poor guy doses off at around 8 pm each night because of the "job". Getting him out of that situation is one of the many reasons why I have been working so hard to succeed online. We all need to reach a point where we are able to enjoy life, not one where we are forced to live to work.

Great story Jennifer.

Thank you for that.
I also see the 2nd type of people around me.

And it is good thing.
I hope in close future I will be able to hire such person, and we both will be happy.

Have a good one
Mike

Thanks for sharing this story.

For me ancient history

Knowing that you are worth more than what a 9-5 job pays you, will help you work more to have your dream of self-entrepreneurship a most, no matter how had it might be. Start the process and continue with it you will get there as long as you don't give up.

Thank you Abel.
Good point. .. actually great point!!!

I will keep that in mind.
Mike.

I don't have a 9-5 job and I wouldn't last long in one. I've been working for myself for a very long time. That being said, I want to stop with "clients" and start making money just working on things I enjoyy. We shall see.

Best day was when I got rid of my last client - and started making a full time income as an affiliate marketer, that was back in 2005.

Good for You.
You area already a step ahead of me.

And lot of power to you for reaching the other level.

Oh I can't even begin to explain how I feel about it.

I had my regular day job until they threatened to fire me because I had a bad nerve injury to my arm. I had no choice but to leave.

After some time, I felt better and started my own business (a shop) and ecommerce store, that totally flopped. Then I started with affiliate marketing.

But of course, affiliate marketing was not going to bring me the money right away, so I had no choice but to go back to the corporate world.

I hate every minute of it!!! After what happened before... all we are, is an asset. As long as they can use us, they will. They pay us what THEY think we're worth and not for the value of the job that we're actually performing.

And when they don't need us anymore, they won't look at your years of service and throw you out like an old pair of socks.

That's what really pushed me to start my own online business. I don't want to be treated like sh*t, even after working for so many years with the company.

I agree with everything that you've said RDulloo. I knew someone who was in that particular situation as well.

Be strong!

Yes, but it's so hard knowing that this is the case with most companies out there. It's about making money and keeping the company afloat, I get it.

But at least if it's got to do with a medical condition, they have to make an exception.

With nerve injuries, it takes months and even years to go back to normal, depending on the extent of the injury.

The insurance company denied my claim, and even though I asked for unpaid time off, my manager would not give it to me. I even ask to come back on a part-time basis and was denied that request too.

So all that was left was either for me to quit, or to go back to the job and risk my arm getting worse.

I just quit! They're not worth ruining my health!!!

I hate when jobs do just that. They only focus on the company, not their workers.

Well, that lets you know that the manager didn't care for you, nor the company for that matter.

Don't they know we're people and we matter?

Your health should be your main concern. It's good you've left that job.

Truly wasn't worth it!

I hear you Reyhana.

You are absolutely right.

Yesterday I was watching Grace`s video about Road To Vegas.
It is wonderful to see that all the effort is eventually paid off.

You have been doing one heck of a job as well - at least from the progress I see you are doing.

You must be "three feet from the gold"

Thanks a lot for your comment
Cheers :)

Same here... We're the ones running the company, so to speak. Without us willing to put up with their crap, they don't have a company.

Yes, although it was hard financially after that, I just had to take care of my health. I'm also happy that I left at that time, but looking to leave this currently company again soon, when I make enough money.

I was watching Grace's video too and it was soooooo inspiring!!!! :) I got so motivated to see that her efforts paid off and I know that mine will too, given enough time and effort.

I really hope that I'm close to seeing success, because I have been here for 9 months. Just like Grace says, it's a matter of outlasting others. If you do, then you will succeed.. :)

Exaactly Right !!!
:)
Mike

For me, I keep the 9-5 job because it pays the bills. Plus, if I quit, I feel like it would be harder finding a new job. I don't know how else to look at it.

I don't think my job is a waste since I am an infant teacher (love the babies hate the pressure of management). But I know it's not something I am going to do my whole life. I try to see the little things that are at least a happy moment and focus on that throughout work, so when it's time to go home, I'm ready to type!

On the business side, when I blog or whatever, I feel free. Yes, it 's a lot of work, but I will rather be typing online than changing diapers! I just try to find the balance in both. I am hoping to leave my job very soon, hopefully, the end of next year. I don't want to make the same amount as my current income but twice as that.

So I'm buckling down!

Hi Alia,

Actually I was not thinking about such jobs - you provide value, no matter what. That is for sure.

But of course we must raise our standards and maybe one day you will open your own school with your own employees.

Anyways, Lets hope for it - I would love to leave my current job by end of the year as well.

Thank you

Hi Mike,
Great post and also I guess this is how many folk feel, who are currently in a 9to5 and are working on their Online Business too. On a personal note, I have been a member here in WA since 2013, and I have found it increasingly difficult to focus on both, a 9to5 job AND my online business. My main 9to5 is working in IT, Tech support and general IT. So just a few months ago I made the decision to just go for it, as I was already providing IT support for a Financial Company on a part time basis, for a small monthly retainer. Part of my plan was to approach this company, because my work load through the day was increasing , impacting on my 9to5 job in a big way. Enough was enough, and I said it's either my 9to5, or I quit my 9to5 and I consult for this other company on a more regular basis, therefore on an increased retainer. I started full time self employed in IT from August, and I have recently secured another client supporting their IT, and I am now pleased to say I am on a full time salary. HOWEVER this income provides a financial cushion to pursue my ultimate dream, which is my Online Business and WA. I don't want to provide IT Support to companies for ever, and I know I can make much more money in my online business.

I hope that this will inspire those who have a 9to5, to just simply go for it. After all, life's too short!

Thank you Tim,

It is difficult to focus on both, you are right.
I must admit, I do spend some time working on my own stuff, even though I am in the office.

It is maybe not nice, but sometimes the workload allows me to focus on WA or on my own niche.

That is great you made already your decision :) - Thumbs up.
Congratulations to your Self-employment!

Cheers
Mike

Thanks for the nice comments Mike. The online business is most certainly the future.

I am still on 9-5 job.
I have to find reasons to keep liking the job otherwise I would feel down, demotivated and hate it - which is not good at every angle, productivity and health as well. That being said, like you said it is a motivation to push even harder on what you are building now.
My target is to say 'sayonara' to my job next year. Let's do it!.
Thanks for the post. It's motivating!

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your comment.
Yes, sometimes I also have to find a reasons to like the job...Actually it is not bed job at all.. but there are certain values I want to have such as:

To work :
whenever I want to
from wherever I want to
if I feel like working at night then I don`t have to worry to wake up in the morning..

well, I believe we all are on the good path here.

M.

Now that is good Michal. If dissatisfaction upset you and makes you motivated then go for it buddy. Anything that stirs that fire under you is powerful stuff.

Great insight Michal. A lot of people never sees this until years have past and nothing to show for it.

You are on the right path and I do believe you will reach your goal.

Come back and post another on this subject. My brother you will see the awesome progress you have achieved. I promise!

Take care and go for it, you will get there!

Frank

Thank you Frank,

I really start to feel little "vibes" that I am at good direction.

Always great to hear it from some one else as well ;)
I appreciate it

Mike

You welcome my brother.
