I browse around on Search Engine Watch from time to time. I did today and the first article I saw and read was very informative.

It IS current and was published this September 15, 2014. Matt Cutts must still be on his extended vacation. So this is done by Jon Ball.

It is a bit long, but well worth the read. Remember if Google isn't happy, no one is happy.

In the article, he talks about, link building AND Link earning. What's the difference between the two?

Read this article to find out.

Great article but of course I'm tool old and ornery to worry about Google. I just write and then write again. I'm a lousy tracker. My criteria is "Am I Selling?" lol John

Yes it was a long, but interesting read. Not sure what it was saying other than low risk (of Penguin Slap), highly effective link building is an advanced SEO subject. I'm going with the guidance provided here at WA by Kyle and Jay on the subject.

Did I hear recently that Matt Cutts has announced he will be leaving Google?

Definitely do that, I will too. Scroll down a bit and you can read Carson's very easy to understand explanation. It really cleared things up.
Appreciate your comments.

excellent article, thank you.

You're welcome and be sure and read Carson's reply below. He explains it all so easily. Thank You!

Thanks for the share,

You are very welcome!

You young folks can follow this advice. I don't have the time (or need the dough). But I agree with Carson, pump out good content and follow the articles advice on using social marketing and such. A good (but windy) article and I have copied the essentials in case I stop being so lazy. Well, I am back on my novels and I update sites each and every day. Thanks, Meredith! John

I agree, Carson's advice is easier to understand. I like how he broke down what the article was saying. PS: You are not lazy! Thanks for your comments.

Thank you for sharing. I will read and learn! Thank you Carson for explaining it so well.

I agree, Carson spelled it out exactly what to do. Appreciate your comments and bet of luck to you!

Thanks for sharing Meredith,

What everyone should take from this article is that naturally building your content and attaining links is key to your performance. Going out and soliciting, dropping links in forums or comments, or getting backlinks in the typical form that most of the GURU's are teaching out there is going to have your content end up being de-ranked by Penguin. This is nothing new - something we've been warning folks about here at WA for a long time.

Do not be afraid of attaining links though - that is what this article is about. If someone links to your website naturally because they find your content helpful, that's great! If someone shares your content, that's great too (we teach this in Certification course #4). If you have a following, or have people subscribed to your website/content, then feel free to let them know about new content and allow them to link to you.

This is all NATURAL, and that is what Google has been aiming for. They want the most helpful content to rise in the rankings - and they penalize those who try to game those rankings by getting hoards of low quality links from irrelevant sites.

There is nothing new in this article folks, just to continue following along with the methods and strategies that we have been teaching at WA.

Focus on quality content which is naturally written and you'll rank very well (and very quickly).

Carson

Wonderful Carson and thank you for chiming in. It is very much appreciated. I know I say this all the time, but WA is Awesome!

What about backlinks to your site that occur when leaving a comment on someone else's site? Would this fall under poor quality or be a potential Penguin problem? Thanks!

Maybe Carson will answer that one. Appreciate your comments!

Thank you and thank you for sharing another awesome resource! All the best!

How nice of you, thank you! I've been wondering lately if my blogs do anyone any good. They don't get as many comments as they used to.

Absolutely and not to downplay anything anyone else shares, but I TRULY appreciate when people, like yourself, share resources that share information that I can directly apply to my own websites and overall business. Keep up the good work and all the best!

Thank you!

Hojo, links from commenting are classed as nofollow so don't pass link juice and won't get you a penguin penalty.

Thank you! Exactly what I was wondering. Very much appreciated answer! Thanks, Dom and all the best!

Thanks Dom. I must have missed that question.

thanks for the heads up on that one - i really wonder about the significance of links other than the fact that someone may click on - it ain't what it used to be

I usually follow Jay's advice in his webinars, That and what K&C say here. However, I still think it's wise to listen to what Google says.

Appreciate your comments.

I agree with you on this. I have bookmarked it. Thank you for sharing.
