I Was Totally Wrong About Just "Pay The Shipping Offers To Get Your Free Book"

Last Update: March 23, 2021

Welcome Everyone!

I searched, but couldn't find the original post if it was on WA about my thoughts when people offered a "Free" book, but you just needed to pay around $8 for S&H.

I had considered that a rip off, because my thinking was the actual wholesale cost of the book with USPS Media rate S&H was less than $8 so they were making a profit on the "free" book.

That is technically true.

If I casually offered that deal to someone and they accepted, I would make a profit from the S&H.

The reality is the people offering this deal are actually LOSING $$$ on the Free book offer?

What?

How is that possible?

If they are paying for advertising to get that offer in front of you they are losing money on the front end.

That sounds crazy!

Yes, it does and seems illogical until you understand just what they are doing.

In the process of offering you the "free" book they are also capturing your email which is worth money in the long run and they are also offering you something more that you could purchase for a higher value and a percentage of people will purchase those. That's referred to as the backend and that is where they make their money and profit.

Very interesting.

Are you offering something on your websites so you can capture their email address?

The more I get into internet marketing, the more fascinating it is.

It's like looking behind the curtain at the Wizard of Oz. hahaha

If you are offering something for free and your potential customer have to pay any monetary value to get it, whether for shipping or handling, then it is not free at all.
As you've noted friend, they are gaining something out of it. Offering something like a free digital book for an email exchange, is like lead capturing for future business with that potential customer. I see that as fair and would consider that as an actual "free" with no obligations. All the best!

I do not like the "free book" and you pay S&H charges. I agree with you they are making money on the deal.

Early on (before I found WA) I had such an offer of a free book and just pay S&H from Hong Kong. They wanted a similar amount of money $14HKD. When I queried them about the cost and said it costs a lot less to ship from there to Thailand the owner of the program came back to me and basically told me if I was serious about earning money online I would be more than willing to pay the price they were asking.
They were very sarcastic and the whole thing deteriorated from there. I was very unimpressed with them and their product.

That soured me on the whole "just pay S&H" scenario.

However, reading some comments below I see it does work for some.

I do like your analogy about pulling back the curtain....that is what we are doing.

You are just like me there Alex - I have never gone for the free but pay shipping and handling unless I really wanted that product or was asked by another party to purchase it. But the fact that it keeps happening means it does work for some, these same businesses will later sell another product but with a different scheme to the emails captured - online marketing it is 🙀

I got "'free" T Shirt like that for $9 S&H. I thought, OK, it must have cost less than that and they must be making a profit. Then I got an email from the same source about a free Go Pro type camera for $14.95 S&H so I ordered
The camera works great and has to have cost somebody more than that.

A few years ago I ordered some sunglasses for $10 and the offer was get another pair free for separate S&H so I did. Bother pairs came in the same box so there was no separate shipping. The $10 sunglasses ended up costing me $23.

Setting up and maintaining a website is something that I found fun. Marketing that website is complex and very time consuming but necessary.
