My current circumstances have made working from home a necessity and I was very excited to come across this opportunity in my search! Those are wonderful goals Melanie and I can tell you firsthand that these are more than achievable. When I started out I had very similar goals and with some hard work and dedication, I exceeded any goals that I could have ever initially set.

You will get there if you invest some hard work and dedication to this, I don't have any doubt. :)

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hi, Evelyn. I have extensive knowledge in the area of organic foods/cooking; organic and natural personal care products, household products, pet products, etc. I posted a question about that and one member told me that's a huge subject and to narrow it down and have more than one site. So I am thinking of beginning with organic and natural pet products. What do you think? I am also thinking about high quality non-toxic cookware and cooking utensils, etc. I cannot afford a premium membership at this time, although I really want it and feel it would be well worth the fee for a year. So, for now, I will take advantage of what is available to me as a starter member. I'm so glad I found your website and that it led me here!

Hey Melanie, it is nice to meet you. both niches are great. Me personally, I never knew there were non toxic cookware and utensils. I'm so uneducated about all these cookware products, you might shed some light within this niche and educate people about the importance of healthy cookware.

When I looked in Jaaxy for keywords there is competition but not as big as organic pet products.

As for WA, you can have two free domains and figure out which niche you would enjoy working on before you commit.

Both niches though look like great opportunity.

So are you saying that non-toxic cookware (and I would include kitchenware in general) might be a better niche to start with? Anyway, yes, there are many toxic materials/chemicals used in cookware, most notably aluminum, which when heated leaches into the food that has direct contact with it. This has been linked with Alzheimers, although there are those who would argue the case. And Teflon non-stick coating on cookware and utensils is extremely toxic and also leaches into the food. There are now many new and safe nonstick cookware choices available that have been developed in recent years. Progress! There are also varying qualities of stainless steel, which is a nonreactive, non-toxic material for cooking, if it's high quality with the right blend of steel and nickel. So there you have a mini lesson from my personal expertise! There is quite a lot to learn on the subject.

Thanks for the mini lesson. I always thought that stainless steel was the best as I always preferred those. The non stick pans, I really never liked because after washing, it scrapes off. The toxic element I never knew about. Very interesting!

Well, I'm running into some trouble. I built a website with Weebly and had no problem at all, but I can't seem to figure this one out. When I click on "Set up your home page" I get a page that says bad request. Meanwhile I tried to made an About page as my home page, but when I view the site I don't see it and I don't understand how to set up a home page and a page for posts. I find it all extremely confusing. HELP! :)

Hey Melanie, Did you hit publish? if you don't hit publish? If you don't publish your pages you won't be able to see it live.
Reply
No I don't think I did. Isn't it possible to view offline before publishing? And I am confused as to how to make my home page an about page and another page for posts. I don't understand the menu part. I don't know why I find it all so confusing, but I do.
Reply
It appears I did publish the Welcome page I created, but I don't see how to make it my Home page.

Under settings, select reading. At the top it says your homepage display. select a static page. Then under pages, select the page you would like to be your home page. Let me know, how it worked for you. :)

Thank you. Yes, that worked. Does it make sense to have a separate About page with more about me and my background, in case anyone is interested? Would that make the website better or would it be TMI? And if it's a good thing to do, roughly how many words would be appropriate?
Reply
SowAndReap Premium
Yes, I would make a separate about page. A lot of people do go to the about page and giving out more data there will build trust in regards to your brand.
Reply
Thanks. I'll do that. I was wondering how long it should be and how long is okay. There's a very interesting and rather extensive story, regarding what set me on this path of organics and natural health, etc., and I already have a well written piece I can use, but I don't know if I should pare it down or if that's necessary. Many people would find it very interesting and it would definitely build trust, and I suppose no one need read it if they're not interested. But it is long and I just want to make sure it wouldn't be too long.
Reply

Don't limit yourself on content. Write it to the point where you feel your point is across.

If it's long that is fine. Each article that you write is going to vary in length.

People like to know your credentials or how you came about the organic lifestyle.

The people who read your about page are people who want more info about you. So they are more incline to read what you gotta say and that builds trust with your brand.

So if it's long that I feel that is great.

If you haven't already, add titles to separate what you have to say because it makes it a lot easier to read.

You're asking great questions and I'm glad you are doing that! You are awesome!
Reply
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I have the piece on my other website. It's already separated into several sections, each with a heading and photos. I'd have to find the photos again, though. I hope I can! :)

In my background story there happen to be 2 Amazon links, but they are not directly within the niche. They are two groundbreaking books about chemicals in our foods and in our environment. Should they be included in any affiliate marketing activity anyway? Or should I remove the links and make it just text?
Reply
SowAndReap Premium
What I would do is make a page about informative books to read. Even though it doesn't reflect exactly your niche, but it is in the arena of your niche.
Reply
So then I should change those to links in the About piece to regular text? And then if I create a page with a book/resource list would I then make those affiliate links or not? Also, as I look to building other sites, I can get a lot of niches out of this one broad area in which I have so much knowledge. So could I then copy the same pages, other than the niche-specific posts, to the other websites?
Reply
SowAndReap Premium
Keep your affiliate links. There is no need to make them other links if you have affiliate links.

Unless, you're moving your website to a new hosting service, I wouldn't copy and paste it because Google and other search engines would look at that as duplicate content.

You want original content on your site because you're building trust with Google and other search engines with a new website.

These search engines don't look at us as people, they look at us as data.

That is the easiest way I can explain how these search engines read our content.
Reply
I never joined an affiliate program. They are just links to Amazon as a courtesy to the reader that I guess don't benefit me. So if I don't copy and paste, but redo everything on each site would that be okay? I'm only referring to the About page, because that would be relevant to any niche under the broader umbrella of the organic lifestyle. Am I making sense?
Reply
I seem to have a zillion questions! Since the niche is cookware, does it make sense to have some healthy cooking tips or even recipes to make it more active and more interesting? Or would that take it off course?

I have finished the Welcome page and the About page (I call it My Story), and I've written my first blog post. I have been looking at the Privacy Policy page and am clueless as to what to do with it. Aside from the recommended text provided, I have no idea what to put there.

Hey Melanie, all you have to do is copy and paste it onto a page not a post. Don't have comments. Change any yourwebsite.com to your domain name. Sounds like you've been working very hard, you should be very proud of yourself. :)

Yes, i have been working hard and I do feel good about what I have accomplished. Thanks so much for your help. Without that I know I would get pretty discouraged in those frustrating moments, although I am one to persevere. I am not into defeat, because i know there is always a way forward!

I did the Privacy Policy page and published it, but I can't see how to follow the instructions on how to hide it from Google. When I scroll down in the editor, I do not see what Kyle shows in the video. There are no options, no boxes to check, nothing at all, and I don't know where to find it.

My first question is do you have classic editor plugin installed?

When I click on Installed Plugins it is there, yes.

Okay, click pages, at the top right corner, you should see screen options, make sure all those options have check marks. Then click classic editor and you should see those options if not let me know!
Reply
When I click on screen options all I see is Columns: Author, Comments, Date, and those 3 boxes are checked; and Pagination: number of items per page.

Is it possible to place a link to one page on another page? I've been making some changes. I have a Meet Me page as a parent page to both an About Me page and a My Story page. On the Meet Me page I say a few words about myself, but I quickly pivot to the niche topic. I would like to have a link in the Meet Me page to go to the About me page where I go on to say a bit more about myself. But I don't want the URL there as the link. I want the link to just say "read more" or something like that. How can I do this?
Reply
SowAndReap Premium
Hey Melanie, to do that, you would highlight the words you want to link, then click on the insert link, (it looks like one chain link). paste the URL you would like to link to and click on add link.
