Thanks for checking out my profile,

I first heard about affiliate marketing back in 2007. Back then I had just graduated with a degree in Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology but was struggling to find paid employment as an ecologist. As my chosen career remained elusive I decided to indulge my passion for travel, and I wound up spending most of my twenties undertaking various adventures around the globe.

The first time I heard about affiliate marketing I remember being really excited about the prospect of making money online as a digital nomad. While travelling, working and volunteering, I invested a great deal of time and effort learning many of the numerous skills that you need to make money online.

I admit that it was a struggle early on, but by trial and improvement I eventually found my feet and started making money.

Of the countless mistakes that I made when starting out, probably the two biggest were not finding the right balance between passion and profitability when choosing a niche, and spreading myself too thinly across too many projects.

As time went on it became clear that I had no enthusiasm whatsoever for the niches that were bringing in the bulk of my income. At the other end of the spectrum, I just couldn't figure out how to monetize the projects that excited me the most.

In addition, I was becoming increasingly disillusioned with the SEO trends of the day, which included 'spinning' articles and using software to submit them to hundreds of article directories in order to acquire backlinks. Thankfully Google eventually put a stop to all that with a couple of timely algorithm updates.

Then came a rather drastic change in circumstances.

I returned to the UK from a trip volunteering on a Marine ecology research station in Asia feeling pretty fed up with the affiliate marketing business I had been growing. I got to the point where I just didn't see the point in continuing to devote my time and energy to promoting the sort of products that were selling well on my websites.

I was of course grateful to have the freedom to earn money online from anywhere in the world, but I wanted more from life. I wanted to feel like my daily efforts were worth something to the world.

So I was planning a major overhaul of my business when I came across a job advert for a local wildlife conservation charity in my home town. I applied for the role and was fortunate enough that they took a chance on me and offered me the job.

I have worked there for over 7 years now, and find my role incredibly fulfilling in so many ways. Upon taking the job I decided to study for a masters degree (MSc) in Conservation Management. This heavily impacted upon my time, leading me to scale my affiliate marketing business right back to just a couple of sites (which I ended up neglecting until recently).

I absolutely love my job and get so much from it, but working in the charity sector is not all roses. I do struggle financially. Where I live the cost of living is very high, and my wages are pretty low.

This past couple of years I have also started to feel the entrepreneurial itch again. Its for these reasons that I have decided to ramp up my business again, hence why I joined WA.

Only this time I am going to approach it the right way and hopefully set myself up for long-term success.

I will be focusing most of my efforts on a single, hugely profitable niche for which I have a real passion. The competition in this niche is fierce but that doesn't concern me, it just means that it might take me a bit longer to see results.

First and foremost I want to truly serve my audience and help them. I will of course be promoting a small number of specially selected products and services, but only those that are in line with my ethics and values, and that I truly think will help my audience achieve their goals.

To stay motivated I need to focus on the needs of others, and by that I don't just mean my subscribers. I thought about joining the "1% for the planet" movement, but actually I don't feel that 1% goes far enough. Instead, I have decided to donate 10% of the annual profits from my business to charity.

Just making that commitment is already having a tremendous impact upon my motivation levels.

Outside of internet marketing I am extremely passionate about the natural world, and have a deep love of travel and adventure. I enjoy a wide variety of adventure sports, especially SCUBA diving, snowboarding, bodyboarding, longboarding kayaking, hiking and pretty much anything outdoors that involves connecting with nature.

I look forward to getting to know you all in the weeks, months and years ahead.

Pura vida

Hello Jon, welcome to WA and thanks for following me. I almost have my Master's in Ocean and Coastal Studies which includes coastal zone management, marine mammal management, marine biology etc. My undergrad degree is in Anthropology so I understand the job limitations!

I am lucky to have a good job for the State of Alaska but I have never had a job that was entirely in my fields of study!

Nice to meet you here and I look forward to reading more about your travels!

No probs and by the way You may not be aware of this but it’s a good idea (only if you want to) to click the 'Like' icon within a comment if you like it as I have done with yours.
Obviously you don't have to click every single comment or you will be here all day doing nothing but.
But to click the ones you like that are replies to your own comments will be reflected in your WA ranking because it shows you are getting involved with the community.
Enjoy your day.

Thanks for the tip Robert.

I am not all that bothered about my WA ranking to be perfectly honest, but I agree that when coming across helpful content liking it is the right thing to do. I will endeavor to bare this in mind going forward.

Have a great weekend.

No probs Jon and don't worry about it.
A lot of members don't simply because they concentrate on why they are here and that is to learn how to earn an income from the internet.
This is as it should be because at the end of the day no matter what your rank is, it wont make you a penny.

You do what's best for you.

Enjoy your weekend to come.

Greetings!

You shared a great quote on someone's post about 2 weeks ago, and I thought a man of such wisdom is one worthy of being followed, lol.

I'm always curious to know how people were able to travel so extensively 10 or 20 years ago. Yo look like you could pass for Prince Harry, so maybe that got you into a lot of places for free, lol.

I bet you have a great deal of knowledge to pass on to others with 10 years of experience doing business online. Looking forward to the connection, Jon.

Hi Veronica, thanks for the follow.

Ha ha ha im not sure about wisdom but I do love a good quote.

I have always lived a simple life so, with a bit of couch surfing, living in vans etc, I have been fortunate enough to have been able to save up for trips abroad. As a qualified PADI Divemaster holding a degree in Marine and Coastal Ecology I also work during many of these trips in dive centers and do some volunteering.

Looking forward to getting to know over the coming months.

All the best

Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate :)

What an interesting bio! I am also passionate about traveling and freedom! But I've fallen into the same traps as you... more time spent daydreaming about my location independence lifestyle and earning money online than actually doing the work to get me there!

It must be very rewarding that you've finally found a job in something you believe in and love so much. Good luck with your online endeavors onward, we're definitely in the right place to learn everything we need about creating a website and sticking with it until it becomes successful.

That's the approach I'm taking now, and in the future I will dabble into more niches I'm passionate about :)

You'll find the community here, besides the excellent training, is what sets Wealthy Affiliate apart from any other online university. So many people willing to help and constant support, even from the founders themselves!

Happy learning and best wishes.

Thank you for the follow and many blessings to you here at WA. As a Premium Member you are now in the process of creating content for your affiliate marketing website.

It is important to fully understand how you should go about creating that content that will produce high Google rankings. Using low competition keywords is only a small part of the process.

Google has a set of guidelines for people creating content on their affiliate marketing websites. They do not like affiliate sites that are heavy on the selling and light on the help.

Though this may not occur to you in the beginning of your affiliate marketing journey, offering help instead of selling to your website visitors will yield more sales.

When you have some time, read the brief training at the link below which will explain Google's guidelines in a more simplistic way. When you help instead of sell, you will see better results.
