Work from Home in Your PJ's?

Are you working from home full time now with your business? Even if you are working part time, working from home can be challenging. There are alot of distractions when working from home, other members of your family, tv, laundry, dinner, cleaning, etc. I started working from home a few years ago and everyone joked that i had the best job and could work in my pj's and that it would be great and easy. Let me tell you it was not easy to work at home by myself. I did go into the office on occasion but it was difficult not to put in more hours than i normally would in the office, and it was difficult to work around all the distractions. At the time my job was at times 24\7 so i would work all day and then i may be on conference calls after hours.

I had to adjust to the life of working at home. So I made a point of every morning starting out as if I was going into the office. I got up early, made coffee, had my shower, got dressed, put on my makeup, ate Breakfast etc as if i was going to the office and then i sat down to work. I created a private office space and tried not to get distracted with regular life going on in my house. I tried to make sure i had a break for lunch, away from my desk, step outside for fresh air.

Here are some work at home tips:

  • Dont work in your pj's, get up and get dressed, eat breakfast before you start your day
  • Plan out your work day
  • Create a private office space away from the family, get a great chair.
  • Take breaks throughout the day away from your desk; coffee, lunch, gym.
  • Drink Water
  • Ignore the home life distractions
  • Keep Positive
  • WORK WORK WORK TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN

Thanks for sharing. I always get up and do 3 or 4 miles before starting work at home. Clears the head and gets me ready to work. Working at home is still work.

I think the important things are to have a ritual and a plan. A plan that includes the day's goal.

I actually do some of my work in my PJs, but that's part of my ritual and it works for me.

It involves get up, turn on computer (I have a home office space) make tea, drink tea while checking emails, make coffee, drink coffee while handling emails, including deleting spam.

Then shower, shave, get dressed and return to a computer that at least doesn't have 250 emails vying for my attention.

Your advice to ignore distractions and keep positive is so spot on.
