Fallen Victim of a Scam?

Many out there have fallen victim of a scam at one time or another, so what to do about it? Sweep it under the rug and forget about it is what most people do if it does not cost them their whole life savings.

But how many people really report a scam on the small scale? Seriously think about all the scams people run on the internet today where if you give them $37.00 they promise to make you rich by the next day.

These people are getting away with this on a daily basis because first they do supply some information for the $37.00 that you send them, but never enough information to make whatever flavor of system they are selling today work.

Does anyone bother to request a refund of their money or did they neglect to read the fine print when they paid the money that there are no refunds?

Either way a good 98% of people do not even bother to request a refund for this small amount and chalk it up to another experience of failed systems that they are still looking for even after getting burned on the first one.

How Can One Report a Scam?

First, you need to file a report with your local police department. After doing this, you may also contact your state consumer protection office filing a report at each level.

Certain types of scams and fraud to federal enforcement agencies once the above two levels are completed. The website below will give you more information for scams and fraud reporting:

If you believe you have been a victim of internet fraud or cyber crime, report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or by using the FBI's online tips form.

https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

I have provided the link above to the Internet Crime Complaint Center - on the site you will find a couple of options to choose from for reporting and the following information is required:

The IC3 accepts online Internet crime complaints from either the actual victim or from a third party to the complainant. We can best process your complaint if we receive accurate and complete information from you. Therefore, we request you provide the following information when filing a complaint:

  • Victim's name, address, telephone, and email
  • Financial transaction information (e.g., account information, transaction date and amount, who received the money)
  • Subject's name, address, telephone, email, website, and IP address
  • Specific details on how you were victimized
  • Email header(s)
  • Any other relevant information you believe is necessary to support your complaint

From there your complaint will be forwarded to federal, state, local, or international law enforcement.

Proving the Scam

You can always report scams proving them on the hand is more than just difficult it could be considered down right impossible.

According to Wikipedia scam a person or group after first gaining someone's confidence, used in the classical sense of trust. Confidence tricks exploit characteristics of the human psyche, such as credulity, naïveté, compassion, vanity, irresponsibility, and greed.

Researchers Lindsey Huang and Barak Orbach defined the scheme as “a distinctive species of fraudulent conduct, intending to further voluntary exchanges that are not mutually beneficial, as they “benefit con operators (‘con men’) at the expense of their victims (the ‘marks’)!"

Because people have become so good at these scams they know the laws and the ins and outs of how to work the system in their favor.

By showing people that they have made enormous amounts of cash and flashy shiny cars, along with big fancy houses people think that they are telling the truth and the system works.

Gaining the trust of innocent people who are looking for a better way of life is easy and they fall prey to the same scam people over and over again.

This is just my opinion, that these scam artisits and gurus use outdated systems or think up new names for a system change a few of the ways they advertise them and here comes the money for them, but the victims are all out another $37.00.

In Closing

After writing my blog post the other day some members have asked how to report a scam and they wanted the information that is the reason for this post today.

I thank those of you who wanted the information easily accessible to you rather than having to Google three or four different places to get the above information taking the time out of our hetic schedules.

This might also help keep someone else from failing prey to another scam whether an old one or new one who can tell :)

Thanks for reading please give it a like if it is helpful to any of you.

This is useful!

The sad thing is that a lot of folks are so embarrassed about being a victim of a scam, that they’re hesitant to contact the police (especially the elderly).

Laurie,
That is why we need to get the information to them
they do not even have to give a name they can do
it anonymously!
Thanks for reading,

Very informative and relevant post!

I have been a victim of a few scams in my life and few shady beginning that I bailed before being scammed. I didn't report or took any action toward making sure nobody else would fall into the same trap.

I had no direction, didn't know the first thing about reporting the scammers. Just kind of scolded myself and moved on.

Now there is direction!

All the best,

Diane

Diane,
I did not know either - funny thing is we just let it go chalk it up
to experience. - When I found this doing keyword research I
was like no way seriously . . . .
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond,
Susan

While I’ve never been scammed with my online business I was scammed several years ago with a short-term rental. Luckily my sixth sense kicked in and my bank cancelled the deposit. I consider myself lucky because scammers have gotten so good at their trade it seems.

Erica
