Call of the Wild

This is an excuse we would use on our absentee form when we were in high school and missed a day or should I say skipped out a day of school.

Thinking back this was not really very acceptable to the teachers or office personnel back then but somehow they left it pass.

Or is it because possibly they never really read what was on the excuse form that our parents were to sign and return for why we missed the day of school?

Back then I never really noticed that people do not read things they skim read over what is written on a page and only pick out certain pieces of content that is in front of them.

Not knowing then what I do know now is it possible they were looking at the excuses for a signature of a parent but never really read the actual reason for you not being in class?

Today my guess would be that is exactly what the teachers and office personnel did when you handed in your excuse for the day of school you missed.

Call of the Wild and Websites

In thinking back to this I now have realized that people seriously do not read every written word on a page of content unless it is written in engaging terms.

When a person visits a website you only have so many seconds to capture their attention to keep them on your website how does one accomplish such a feat?

Keywords are used for indexing and ranking true but that is not what is going to keep people on your website reading your content.

What is the secret to grabbing their attention to have them read everything you have painstakingly written on all those posts?

Automaticity: Activate the senses. - Sensory cues like noise and loud colors (red).

Framing: Contextualize your argument to appeal to your audience. - Repetition.

Disruption: Break expectations. - Anything that violates our expectations.

Reward: Create desire. - our desire to “want” food, sex, money or more intrinsic rewards.

Reputation: Establish credibility. - you’re trying to capture the attention of people who don’t know you, lead with your credentials, establish your expertise and cite others who are most knowledgeable on the topic at hand.

Mystery: Leave things incomplete. - memory is fine-tuned to remember incomplete stories and tasks nagging at your audience so they will come back for more.

Acknowledgment: Contribute to your audience's identity. - our need for validation and empathy from others – is one of our most vital needs.

These are the ways to capture someone's attention working one of these into your first paragraph along with your keyword / keyword phrase might just work build traffic.

Length of Content

Once you do have someone's attention then your content being at 1000 words or more must be good enough to continue holding their attention right?

If you follow from the above suggestions then keeping them reading is going to take some skill as well trying these might help you.

Help them to see what you are seeing describe with words what you want them to see make it sound like they are right beside you but in a way they are blind and cannot see.

Make it personal give statistics if necessary but always use a personal touch but get to the point dragging things out will only bore them and possible they will just leave.

Use emotions write with feeling you need to portray to the perspective person what it is that you are helping them with and you have the perfect solution to their problem.

In Closing

As a newbie here at WA I am still trying to find my writing style without coming across as I am trying to sell something to people.

This is a difficult task because to me I have always been honest with people and personally I would just love to write "Hey do not be fooled by those scams out there come join me at WA"

But knowing this is not the correct way getting this point across is difficult to say the least let alone keep people's attention to read a 1000 word or more post about it.

I do not blog often inside WA until recently when I started to figure out this helps with my writing skills and style.

Please if any of you ever feel like leaving me comments on my skills or style of writing I will not be offended would actually appreciate knowing if I am improving or not.

Thank you so much for reading my new blog,

Susan

Elaine

Elaine,
Thank you, your opinion means a great deal to me :)

Hi Susan, I ready with almost no skimming to be honest, but I am a fast reader and only if not really understand then I would skim back.
Have a great day
Tommy

Tommy,
Thank you for reading, I must admit there are times I catch
myself doing this because I read fairly fast myself. But
then I end up going back to double check myself on things!

Some really good points Susan, the scary thing is that what you have written is so true, when it comes to reading it is a skill just as writing is a skill, with the advent and adoption of mobile devices folks are seriously becoming skim readers.

One of the benefits of WA is that we are finding our way to creating engaging content, imagine being out in the wild and trying to do what we do all on our little olde lonesome. Here we have so many things to help us find our writing sweet spot.

You are doing great.

Alex,
Thank you coming from an experienced member this means
a great deal to me :)

I read to the end Susan, so you must have captured interest! I enjoyed your writing style. Thanks for sharing 😊

Melissa,
Thank you I am still new to this and learning this means so
much that you enjoyed it :)

Susan, you held my attention all the way down to your name. I find your writing style to be easy and engaging, as well as friendly, but that is just my opinion. Also, I like your use of graphics. Especially the wolf.

Chuck

Chuck,
Thank you so much (blushing)!
I used to have one he died at 14 years old :(

You really can write Susan. I admire it.

Jimmy,
Thank you, I appreciate you saying that! :)

The more I'm envious about it. LOL

Jimmy,
Please do not be I am so new to this I feel my writing is still
terrible and I need so much help, but people like you and
the others here make me feel very welcome at WA and put
my confidence level up there too I CAN DO THIS.
Thank you because of members like you I will never give
up in succeeding here :)

You have the advantage over me because you are using your own language. I find difficulty in having new vocabularies in English. I wish I was born in the USA.

Anytime you would need assistance you can always ask
I would be happy to help :)

Thank you, I will exploit that, lol

Awesome post-Susan and I agree with what you have written all the way.
