TIP 4 > Use PHP 7.0 and above

Another majorly overlooked tip...speed is optimised automatically when using the most up to date versions of PHP

What the hell is PHP I hear you saying?

PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor (weird I know, a computer word which isn't an acronym!...hooray!).

Without getting too technical PHP is an open source (software people can modify and share due to its design being publicly accessible), server-side, scripting language used for the development of web applications.

Basically it's a script-based program (made up of lines of code) deployed on a server written specifically for the automation of tasks and WordPress is built on it.

In fact you could say that PHP is the actual building materials from which WordPress is constructed and there have been 32 major version releases of WordPress since the platform’s first inception in 1994!

Believe it or not only 1.5% of all WordPress installations are currently using the latest version of PHP which at the date of this post is PHP 7.3, while a whopping 39.6% of WordPress websites are still using PHP 5.6, which was released way back in August 2014!

Lets put it another way...

Would you give up your latest version iPhone Xr just released to instead go back to using a first generation iPhone from 2007?

Of course not..and why not?

well a part from it not looking at all cool, it's technology and functionality would be so basic and outdated when compared to today's tech, it's security would be flawed and it's response times would be so frustratingly slow, you'd have to wrap it in a football because you would be throwing it around so much!

And that's exactly how your WordPress setup will perform with PHP 5.6 released back in 2014!

So why are so many WordPress websites still using PHP 5.6?

In a word, the blame lays with a failure of our Hosting providers to keep up to date but we as consumers are also to blame for not keeping them in check!

WordPress them selves now recommends that we use PHP 7.2 or greater...and with their latest versions has seen a complete redesign of the engine that drives PHP..it's lighter, more dynamic and has a key emphasis on performance and response times.

So in terms of our WordPress installations what's the solution? Pretty straight forward actually, we simply choose a host which supports PHP 7.3 and is proactive in keeping their technology stack, including WordPress, up to date.

So in summary, when you're new to all this stuff, affiliate marketing, building websites, finding niches, creating and publishing content, indexing, Google ranking etc etc etc...it's not the end of the world if you're not running WordPress on the latest version ....although for security purposes it is always desirable if possible.

To be totally honest, from a speed and response point of view it isn't the end of the world if your WordPress website is loading a little slowly....because right now you are probably at a stage where you are learning the basic tools and skills which will come together like a big jigsaw at some point in the near future.

Its small consistent baby steps which are far more important than the technical stuff right now. But as you develop those skills and become more proficient in this field...your education and attention will turn to these finer aspects....because you'll have arrived at the stage of your business where you want to maximise your advantages over your competitors to service your customer and get that sale!

Patience is the key!

To our success!

Great post! I agree with you I must have arrived at the part in my business where I am trying to maximize my advantage, and as I went through my site trying to fix some issues that I'm having.

I then mysteriously come across an error Security alert PHP and SQL alert so, I guess, I'm own my way to bigger an better things. Thanks for this post. I learned a lot.

Hi Lakisha, glad you found it useful and good luck with your future endevours :)

Thank you, Anthony!

Thanks for this. I've just been alerted to the fact that this is likely to be an issue going forward. No-one has answered whether they've asked the guys or not, so I'm going to.

Answer: The latest version of php is in testing stages and will be available to us all soon! : ) xx

Hi! Thank you for this very informative lesson.

Just wondering, since our wordpress has only about PHP 5.2, has anyone already ask Kyle or Carson about upgrading it?

Thanks!

Yep, in testing and coming soon.

Awesome! That's great news:)
Thanks Avecita!

Soon? It's been six months. I would like to host my website here for convenience but until they update this, I am waiting. I hope they do it "soon".

Very informative. Thanks Anthony and have a great day!

Cheers Frank, you too!

I've had brilliant help from SITE SUPPORT today which SOLVED my problem.
I'm a newbie, still in lesson 2. Being able to get my problems solved, and others sharing their blogs & stories is the 'juice' that feeds me...

And I'm becoming more patient

Patience is the key that will secure your success. Before you know it you'll have built something truly amazing :)

Thanks Anthony. Marion has answered the question I was about to ask, Bit of a moot point then, as WA hosts my websites

Terry

Hi Terry, thanks for stopping by and for your feedback. As with any issue regarding software server side all I can suggest to you is get in touch with support to raise query.

Not available on Wealthy Affiliate's hosting platform

Hi Marion, couldn't we just ask Kyle and Carson to make it available ? They are usually open to suggestions that improve the services they provide.

It's worth a try, Tomas.

Coming soon x

Yet WA promotes themselves as the best managed WordPress hosting.

Not available here

Hi Glen, from personal experience, WA offer a great all round managed hosting service. It's been tailored moulded to work alongside its top notch training modules and offers first class support services. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. As you develop your business and you can justify the added overheads of investing more into the technology side of your business...then things like dedicated hosting might be something which you would want to explore. Also, as I've mentioned previously please don't get the PHP version mixed up with the version of the WordPress software itself...they are totally separate entities. All the best, Anthony

Hi Anthony - great stuff. It's always good to keep the bits and bobs updated.

But how do we do it?

Ian

Ask your hosting provider to update the PHP

Ah... Well that would be WA, then :-)

Can we find out which version WA is running?

Ian

The screenshot above was taken minutes ago and is from the only website I have running on WA. The information is available through the Wordfence security plugin Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics

Hello Ian, in reference to this post...the PHP version that is running on the back end / server is down to your hosting provider...what ever their technology stack supports. Please do not get the PHP version mixed up with the version of the WordPress software itself...they are totally separate entities. All the best, Anthony

Thanks Marion, yes there are a number of plugins that can display your PHP version...one of the easiest to use is "Display PHP Version" Pretty much all you have to do is install the plugin and activate it. You will then be able to see the current PHP version under "At a Glance" in the WordPress dashboard.

So we could really do with an upgrade?

Anyone been in touch with Carlson?

Ian

Hi Ian, I personally host offsite, but i'm sure if you raise a query with support they can advise what their plans are for future upgrades. Thanks for your interest and support. Have a great day

Thanks for sharing, Anthony.

Thanks Roger, have a great evening buddy

No problem, Anthony.
You have a great evening also.
